Artist Beautifully Illustrates This Monster Story That’s Been Making People Emotional For Years

Interview With Artist

Some very few things on the internet stay there forever. And one particular writing prompt released back in 2017 sure has stuck around for a while.

Titled “#Case: 273402 Status: Disastruous,” the story was created by the author Kitten Wiskers, better known as Mindy these days. It follows a little girl named Charlotte Dower who is no longer scared of any of the monsters beneath her bed. It soon turns out, there’s a far worse creature in her life.

The tale has caught the imagination of many, but thanks to the Russian artist Natalya Sorokina, it has now been turned into an impressive comic strip. Natalya, who goes by the nickname jwitless, said it’s her “first colored comics ever,” which made her feel slightly nervous. Let’s take a look at the beautiful set of illustrations below, and get ready for the haunting tale to hit you hard.

The story is known as one of the most shared tales on the internet and it has served as an inspiration for a lot of fan art, including movies. The short horror film titled “Charlotte and the Monster” inspired by Kitten Wiskers’ tale was released back in 2018.

Since its appearance, the tale has been shared so much on social media accounts, it’s becoming hard to pinpoint the exact date it was posted. It allegedly emerged as a writing prompt on one Tumblr blog that was dedicated to stories and poems as well as witty remarks and additions in the Tumblr community.

And Russian artist Natalya Sorokina decided to illustrate it in this comic strip

Bored Panda contacted Natalya, the 25-year-old artist from Moscow, to find out more about her love for drawing. Natalya is an illustrator at multiple design agencies and she also draws commissions for people’s personal projects. “I like to switch styles and themes, so my Instagram gallery may seem too diverse—from sexy portraits to cute comics for children.”

Natalya said she loves “drawing beautiful people, fantasy creatures, and making meaningful stories which touch the strings of human souls.” When she started drawing as a child, it was mostly horses: “I made dozens of comics with horses in notebooks, where my mom helped me to write down characters’ conversations.” Later, Natalya discovered her passion for creatures that “I haven’t ever seen in real life.”

The illustrator said that “the monster tale moved her deeply.” Plus, “the storyline is short, simple, yet brilliant.” The monster tale inspired her to illustrate the story before adding any details and script changes. “I was very nervous, thinking I didn’t do my best and that people wouldn’t like it. I couldn’t decide on publishing the first chapter for several months,” confessed Natalya.

When it comes to inspiration, Natalya loves browsing art galleries and exploring different styles and techniques. “And sometimes it comes from my heart. When I worry about something, art helps to release the sadness.” She calls it “a free therapy session.”

Something like this happened in my town in the late 80s. There were three russian guys living in our town. They were living a peaceful life doing a small construction and lown mowing business and no one cared about them. One day evening, at a local store parking lot, a local goon came drunk and started beating his teenage son in front of everyone. This guy was a pure criminal and ex convict, he was in prison for armed robbery, his wife left him because of his abusive character, he was living with his son and he used to beat him for no reason. Everyone knew this and none had the courage to stop him.

At that time, these russian guys were coming after work, they saw this happening, they walked in and asked him to stop. But he didn't stop and called them names thinking they will step back, but the opposite happened. In a moment they jumped on him, overpowered him and started beating him into pulp, he even lost some teeth. Goon's friend came to help him and showed a gun, but guess what, one russian guy pulled out a even bigger gun, and that person got scared and away. The goon couldn't even stand and was crawling on the ground pleading to stop beating.

This is so beautiful and so moving. The only think I would change is that most abusers don't look like low-life brutes, they are perfectly normal looking and are sometimes very well respected by their neighbors and co-workers. I wish the abuser looked more like an average person. But I loved this story and will save it.

Read RJ's comment, wanted to share a similar story, from the early 90s, when I was a kid. One day in our local park, one man in his 50's with prison tattoos was seen beating a young man in front of his kids. Because of his prison tattoos no one dared to intervene and cops were called. My uncle was in the force at that time. They immediately came and arrested him, but he was still yelling like I will not spare you and I will kill you, things like that. Cops questioned him and learned that he had spent a decade or so in prison for killing the guy who raped his child. He was just a few months out of the prison, and while he was sitting at the park, he saw that man doing things to his kid. Seeing that, he get got really angry and charged at him and beaten him into a pulp. Knowing this, cops let the old man go without any charges, and took the other guy in custody, charged him and sent him to prison.

This actually brought tears to my eyes. I am so thankful for having grown up with parents who loved their children. There are so many children who never get to know what parental love is. They all need their own monster under the bed, or a neighbour who hears things and acts upon it, or a teacher who has the guts to investigate why the kid falls asleep in class every day. Civil courage. Personal responsibility. All children are our own children!

This is sad. It's a tragic reminder of people's need to control and break and torture others. That why it's so sad that people have kids. Those innocents are always scapegoats for people's destruction. I wish people would go infertile. Or become robots. Atleast the destruction of innocence would stop.

We are talking about ‘creatures’ that generate fear in children for reasons unknown. First of I’d say they have a weird alien mentality and second that this monster is either a weird one in his society or he is in charge because he understands the reasons they scare children in the first place and this is clearly not it.

So sad the child had to say mommy will cry instead of being comfortable enough to talk of the abuse. A Lot of mother's have a bad habit to not either be aware or ignore the situation to stay with thier boyfriend or husband. My mother in particular being one of those people.

I think that punishments for abuse should be equivalent to the level of harm inflicted on the subject of abuse. If you physically abuse your wife by hitting her constantly, you get hit constantly for a day, for example.

An ex-girlfriend of mine confided in me that her Stepfather sexually and physically abused her from age 4 through 18 when she moved out. He would allow his friends to come over and have at her while he watched. In high school, she was not allowed to shower daily. I also found out that she was actually the "Smelly" girl my sisters and their friends use to pick on. He was suffering from Cancer other health issues back around '93. He was dying. We lived in another state but traveled to see him because, in her mind, he was the only Father she had ever known. We visited with her parents for a few hours. She left to town with her mother to grab a few things for dinner, leaving just me, her father and her baby sister, (Sister was around 14 at the time). Anyway, I had a little talk with him while sister played outside. I let him know that I knew everything. While we talked, I took it upon myself to "Adjust" his oxygen and continued to discuss his past indiscretions. It was . . .

All children need monsters under their beds. Not to scare them, but to make sure they are safe. To put them back in bed when they fall out, to tuck them in when they kick the covers off. And, if necessary, to be their personal bodyguard.

Typical story! The male character is the predator and the innocent, fragile females are the victims. Let's all ignore the reality that 1 in 6 men are victims of domestic violence. It may be 1 in 4 for women, but that shouldn't make us forget about the male victims.

If the monster was able to handle the situation like that, why couldn't all the others so the same?

We are talking about ‘creatures’ that generate fear in children for reasons unknown. First of I’d say they have a weird alien mentality and second that this monster is either a weird one in his society or he is in charge because he understands the reasons they scare children in the first place and this is clearly not it.

This broke my heart...no child should go through anything like this ever... But then I smiled...The monster protected her...

This melted me down to nothing. I wish I could be this kind of monster under certain kid's beds.

So sad the child had to say mommy will cry instead of being comfortable enough to talk of the abuse. A Lot of mother's have a bad habit to not either be aware or ignore the situation to stay with thier boyfriend or husband. My mother in particular being one of those people.

If your reading this I hope you have a great day and know. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” ‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NIV You don’t have to be alone. God’s got your back.

It was . . .

. . . a really relieving talk ending with me telling him to enjoy Hell. He died later that same night. Cancer got him . . . I guess. Lol.

As a father the mere mention of someone harming their child makes my skin crawl in pain and anger. How can one take joy in harming a helpless child that you are supposed to protect and guide????

All children need monsters under their beds. Not to scare them, but to make sure they are safe. To put them back in bed when they fall out, to tuck them in when they kick the covers off. And, if necessary, to be their personal bodyguard.

This hit home for me. I wish I had a monster to protect me like this. This is why I've never been scared of much other than spiders, people, and cars. :'(

I remember reading this prompt way back then on Instagram as I don't use tumblr. Writing prompt has an Instagram account. A very powerful story that struck me right here in the kokoro. :( I also really loved the story and so would like to know how her life got better after that.

Typical story! The male character is the predator and the innocent, fragile females are the victims. Let's all ignore the reality that 1 in 6 men are victims of domestic violence. It may be 1 in 4 for women, but that shouldn't make us forget about the male victims.

Christ isn't in this story, therefore irrelevant. Believe what you want, but you're missing the point of the story.
