People Call Breastfeeding Model “Disgusting”, Probably Regret It After Her Friend Posts The Real Story Behind It
Model Mara Martin has been in the headlines lately, after nursing her baby on the catwalk as part of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit show. The happening, which was described as a spur-of-the moment thing, has been hailed as ’empowering’ and ‘inspirational’ by many media outlets, and Mara herself wrote on Instagram: “I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”
Predictably however, not everyone was impressed. Amongst the outpourings of positivity and respect, there have been a number of critical voices offering up a range of grievances, as well as the usual trolls who are just there to spread hate. One commentator, who identified herself as Mara’s best friend, wasn’t having any of the hate however, and delivered a quite stunning response, full of love and respect for her friend’s actions.
The entire episode has kicked off the discussion about breastfeeding in public, and the heartening show of support for Mara is a positive sign that the stigma is being overcome. Scroll down below to check out the story for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Share on FacebookHonestly, so many fashion shows have models parading topless. Some clothes are literally transparent. But noooo, it's breastfeeding, so she's totally an attention seeker.. ugh. Those negative people should seek some empathy.
I wouldn't be brave enough to show my boob to the whole world. She was, it's her thing and nothing for me to judge. Oh, and if you are disgusted - you can always look away. Noone forces you to stare. Who is more disgusting? She feeding her child or you staring at her breast? :/

However, this is the Sports Illustrated swimsuit show, an offshoot of the SI swimsuit issue which is solely dedicated to taking attractive women and their breasts and sexualizing them. In the middle of an evening of people drooling over the stream of hot models parading down a runway, a woman comes out breastfeeding her child. A bit out of place considering the theme of the evening. Second, do you really think this wasn't planned? Junior couldn't wait the 30 seconds it takes mom to walk to the end of the runway and back? No, this was a PR stunt to get people talking and that is exactly what we're doing.
Agreed. Next time it’ll be a woman breastfeeding her 10 year old. Lol. At least he’ll be able to walk alongside her so her hands are free.

Boobs are there to feed babies...Anything else is secondary. The people who can't get their heads around that, are the ones that have the problem ,not the Mum feeding her child.
I'm totally fine with public breast feeding, but why did she have to drag the poor kid onto the catwalk?
Back room or a nursing blanket. Just getting your two minutes of fame. Using the kid the way you are child services should be involved.
I was actually looking at the rest of her, looks like a real woman - not a teenager & that in itself makes this a more diverse runway show. Very cool.
I don't think there is anything wrong with what she did. Her time to strut the catwalk came while the baby was hungry. The only teeny tiny concern that occurred to me was just about the baby getting hiccups or something as it wasn't an ideal way to feed - but then I'm no expert. Just that all the mums I've known have always made a bit of a thing about sitting down comfortably and giving the baby time and peace. Hardly a serious worry, though, seeing it was a one-off feed.
For a baby that age, it would be fairly easy. For a tiny baby, less than three months, that definitely would have been difficult. They need a lot more support.
Load More Replies...If it is not appropriate to eat in public, then why are there restaurants? Babies have to eat too. You might just say it is essential for life. As a mom of three who breastfeed until they were one, I can say that I grew weary of having to nurse in bathrooms and other disgusting places.
This will probably get downvoted, but why would you even take a little baby like this to a fashion show? By all means, it absolutely does need feeding, mother's attention and peace - and probably a lot more of that than it got on the show after/while being held by a mom on heels for 12 hours. I mean, on one hand you could say it's op brave and whatnot to keep doing your job and all with your little baby literally in your hands, on the other, perhaps if it's actually her baby's needs that she values and not her pics and "powerful message" going viral, maybe she should've stayed at home with her baby instead.
To all those idiots out there disgusted and ranting or pissed over it - you wouldn't even be alive if humans hadn't breastfed their babies. They did it while running away from attacks, while preparing dinner during vicious storms - wherever, whenever. Your attention seeking don't disturb "my perception of when breastfeeding is allowed" tweets are just bunk.
Stupid logic. We wouldn’t be alive if we didn’t have sex. So does that mean she should be able to have sex on the runway? We also wouldn’t be alive if we didn’t urinate. Should she be able to p**s while on the runway? Maybe it’d be ok as long as she was standing up...you know...to show the world that women can pee erect just like men. Anyways, anytime a bodily fluid is exiting the body, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, it’s typically not something other people want to watch. Then again maybe you like watching women while they pee.
Load More Replies...So I find it interesting that people are going out of their minds about this model breastfeeding while on the catwalk. Most of the countries I've ever read about would have no problem with this. The ones that do have a problem with this..conservative countries that treat their women like property and the good ole' USA. And here I thought that the USA was supposed to be the land of the free and PC about everything. SMH. Worry about how you live your life and stop trying to tell your neighbor how to live theirs.
Two lovely ladies enjoying some mama/baby love while showing the world that natural nourishment and pride of parenting are very good things!!
Clever SI - they knew exactly what they were doing telling her to go out there while breast feeding and clever model for following it through. There is no bad publicity remember???
Why is everyone so triggered at a bit of boob that's being used for WHAT IS MADE TO BE USED FOR. y'all freak out when someone holds a pen and writes too? "i'm all for dexterous fingers but do you really need to flaunt your writing skills in front of everyone?? what an attention whore!"
Lol! The logic in here is amazing! Cause clearly the major and ONLY issue here is solely about her breastfeeding...it has nothing to do with her being on a runway where she’s supposed to be looked at by the PUBLIC while modeling clothes. Or that she could easily have waited 5 minutes until after she finished. Isn’t breastfeeding something special between a mother and baby? Shouldn’t she be focused on the baby? Maybe the baby doesn’t want to be breastfed in public? Did she get it’s consent?
Load More Replies...I can't understand all the hate and debate about public brestfeeding. Here in Argentina is something completely normal and nobody would do a fuss about it.

Hate: "a word used because some people are Offended by other people's words, so they brand their speech in an attempt to shut them down." Now, let the downvotes begin.
Honestly, all I kept thinking was "Poor baby getting jiggled around while momma's walking" lol I always covered up in public, but it was more for my child and my's benefit than for other people. If I was at home and people were over I never covered up. If I felt comfortable enough to have someone in my house I felt comfortable enough to breastfeed. Though that did lead to an amusing episode of a male friend yelling "Oh Holy Lord!' and covering his eyes because to him friend boob was different than regular boob. I still laugh about that to this day :p
When there's no way to get comments, likes, shares, s**t..we talk about breastfeeding. Lame. It became a subject that's identical to religion, footbal, politics... Everybody should satisfy all their needs everywhere, anytime and anyhow! Stop kicking out people f@#ing in airplanes toilets!
Those people comparing breastfeeding to urinating and masturbating are awful human beings. I don't care how "accepting" they say they are. They're comparing WASTE coming out of a person, to FEEDING A BABY. That's absolutely psychotic to think.
People want to be offended by everything. I'm only offended by stupidity. There's nothing stupid about this.
It's thought provoking that those against her breastfeeding was all woman (at least in this post) why can't we support each other, instead of bullying? They must have a dull life to be like that.
I thought it was amazing. As a young mother I was terrified to breast feed in public and ended up doing it in some awful places (public toilets in a park was a memorable one). It never occurred to me at the time that it should be any different, I just went with societal norms. I wish I'd been this brave and maybe I would have had a happier baby, who wasn't forced to wait until I got home or was shoved under a duffel coat to feed by an embarrassed and stressed mama. The negative comments are up there with a woman (a mum btw) who said she would punch a mum and her baby if they breastfed in front of her kids. Just bizarre attitude.
This post was eye-opening. As someone who’s never breastfed I didn’t realize women had it so hard. When breastfeeding on either a public toilet OR while on a runway while you’re modeling clothing, are your ONLY TWO OPTIONS, it must be sooo freaking difficult. God please save America... #leftlogic
Load More Replies...I'm just thinking about how difficult it would be to breastfeed and walk in heels at the same time
Good for her - It's a good cause - the world needs more awareness of mothers and babies. And even if it weren't - people need to stop caring so much. Even if it had been just for attention, isn't attention seeking 99% of what ppl do these days? Just get over it. We don't need to criticize and impute base motives to everything that happens. The great majority of what celebrities and wanna-be celebrities do with their boobs should elicit no more than a shrug. I really don't care if a woman shows her boobs on the runway either way. Do you? So why when it's breastfeeding is it a big deal?
So lovingly and sweet, Congratulations Mara Martin for being able to breastfeed your baby <3 I so support Breast feeding <3 I do feel sad for those who are unable to breast feed their child/children. <3
Come on!! there´s a lot worse happening out there and they freak out bc a woman is breast feeding?
"a spontaneous decision" Ah the old, time honored euphimism for "publicity stunt". While I agree that breastfeeding is perfectly normal and a part of life, she could have done that backstage. Pissing is also normal and a part of life, yet we have to go to a specialized room to do it. Somehow I don't see people pissing in the streets as 'empowering’ and ‘inspirational’, but as prosecuted by the police.
Do you go to a special room to eat? Can you eat in public? On your couch, at a sports game, in front of other people? Yes, you can. And so can babies.

Give as little f***s as possible and strive to give zero so hard you manage to give negative f***s even though that makes no sense
Disgusting people, shaming a woman for doing something natural. How is it attention-seeking to feed your baby when she's hungry? You should all be ashamed of yourself, and I hope to God that you are no longer able to procreate as punishment for your judgment.
I mean, maybe we can normalize this, but feeding in the work place is a no go for most moms. It just seems like poor planning on the part of the model, whose job it is to show that bathing suit. You want to breast feed in public, do it up... but this is not a simple case of someone showing their breast.
I don't mind breastfeeding. I mind a swimsuit show. It's 2018, people, why do we still have half-naked women on a catwalk?
So it's alright for women to go topless for male interest magazines and the like but a nursing mother pops a boob to feed her baby and the internet goes into meltdown. These negative keyboard warriors need to get a life or at least remember why women have boobs in the first place. I think she's a wonderful mother and true inspiration. Good luck to her and her beautiful baby.
? I don't understand the problem. Is it because the child in nursing? Well, breast milk is clearly designed for human consumption so what's the problem? Is it because a nipple might be exposed? Every person on the planet has at least two nipples so why are they taboo for women but not men ? I don't see what the brouhaha was about.
Omg, it's a f*****g tit, get over it. It has a purpose and she used it properly, god forbid. More power to her foot making her statement. Free the titties!!
Notice all the people throwing hate are fellow FEMALES?? WTH kind of messed up society do we have when females are 'grossed out, disgusted, etc' with something that is a natural part of their life??? I'm far, far more disturbed by the reactions of these girls than I ever would be at someone breast feeding in public. Raise your kids better than this people. As a female this is just depressing.
Yeah, give your kids whatever they want whenever they want wherever they want. Screw other people! Let’s make more ignorant, smug, selfish, entitled liberal know-it-alls to populate these forums! #endthecycle

I'm sick of all these new age mothers demanding to be allowed to breast feed in public. If you want to do it, drape a light blanket or something across you. Is that really so hard? I don't want to see that anymore than I want to watch suckling pigs, cats, puppies, or any other animal. Yes, it's natural. But so is taking a c**p and peeing, and you can't do either of those where ever you are in public. If you're going to do it, stop with the 'it's natural' b******t. Personally, I think it's degrading to women because it puts us on the same plain as other animals.
You are disgusting, obsessing about the swimming suits. At least bother to learn to swim to a decent standard before doing so. It's a human life, health and motherhood we are looking at! And it beats any f..ing fashion show any day.
I think that all people with a negative reaction never had a baby to be proud for it, and are frustrated, jealous or symply ugly.
This week the occupant of the White House's administration made the USA the ONLY industrialized nation to come out in favor of formula over breast milk. I can't match the dates between the two events but I think it's ;ess than a week.
People always find a reason to hate. They do it for attenchen. Possibly not in this case but sometimes while one person gets attenchen or whatever the other person can hate themselves and resort to cuting or suiside. My best friend did this so to me this is NOT OK. WHO ARE YOU TO MESS WITH A LIFE!
The baby is hungry and she has job to do... At least she is better at nursing her baby and give her the nutrition that she need and still completed her job with flying colors... She is a mom after all. A great mom if i can say. Attending her baby while doing her job
Here's the thing, I'm 10000% for breastfeeding. I don't give half a s**t about tits being out and feeding babies. But this was a publicity stunt people, come on. Don't be stupid.
Agreed. Kids have been breastfeeding for millennia. They've also had to wait a few minutes for millennia.
Load More Replies...This just isn't fair on the child, you want your picture all over the internet than go right ahead but the child has a right to privacy and until they are old enough to make a decision about their pictures just should not be posted.
The whole breatfeeding rebeling seems to have started from people disliking innocent public breastfeeding, so why can't we shame them instead of continuing a rebel? Doesn't seem quiet right for the baby to be in that situation...Just seems extreme. Lets start making memes with a grumpy person and text like "I saw a mother breastfeeding today...I am offended she's keeping a child alive as nature intended!"
"What do you think? Share your opinion in the comments below!" I'm not seeing the big fuss, I get what people are saying about her showing off or looking for attention but it's part of an industry in which women walk down a cat walk in their underwear with giant wings attached to their backs, showing off is kind of the point, the wanky I'm just a mum trying to juggle looking after a kid while saving the universe could have been toned down a bit but it's all a storm in a tea cup.
Im all for breastfeeding in public, i don't see a problem with it. But doing it on the catwalk where you've been paid to show off the designers swimwear isn't ok.
Honestly if you really want to know........many career Momies need to make a choice, baby ‘s welfare or her job! It is cruel to shelp a tiny baby onto a public venue just to breastfeed in public! There are many other ways for a new Mother to provide for the baby’s feeding instead of her walking in public for just a few minutes! This lady has a few flakes missing! Child abuse?
I mean I don't think it has to go so far as to be paraded on a catwalk. It's just another natural human thing, like taking a poop or menstruating. Society needs to quit shaming everything
Wouldn't want her doing that if she was my surgeon. This negativity isn't about a boob or public breastfeeding. It's about a time and a place for everything and the true underlying intent of her actions.
Samantha, good thing she didn’t need to relieve herself when the editor said “go for it”.
Nope. Eating and peeing are two different things. If she changed the baby's diaper on the catwalk, that would be equivalent.
Load More Replies...The thing that gets me is how her hair looks wet... it doesn't look natural.
Really? That's what you took away from all of this? A model, modeling a swimsuit and who has wet hair? Perhaps like someone who has been swimming? X0)
Load More Replies...I'm all for her ability to breastfeed while walking down a runway. However, like it has been mentioned, she did show her boob basically to the world via the internet. I just hope she put thought into that fact and how maybe she should choose to be a little more modest for her child's sake in the future. Especially with how viral this is. But I AM NOT saying that she should be more modest, just saying that I hope she thought about that. I know kids don't want to grow up and all their friends have seen that kid's parents intimate parts. (I had a friend growing up whose mom was a porn star, and he was not appreciative of this.
Have you ever watched fashion shows at all? Models who walk down the runway, sometimes wear see through tops, and nipples are visible in that case. In this case you don't even see the nipple, just a part of the boob with her baby attached to it, for feeding! And the child should/could be ashamed/embarrassed later in life? So you would say models who have walked down the runway in see through clothing (tops) should not get kids at all? That is what I get from your comment. Because the child might get ashamed/embarrassed because there are pictures on the internet of their mom who was modeling a see through top while walking down the runway? Plus, when the child is at an age they might get embarrassed/ashamed like you say, these pictures are not in the spotlight anymore.

Breastfeeding is natural and very beautiful! It is the way we are supposed to feed infants. I breastfed my baby and loved it! BUT... The reason so many people find breast feeding revolting is not the natural act itself, but the way the woman exposes herself in public. SO... The breastfeeding mother needs to exercise self-respect and cover her naked breast. Plus, covering the breast and baby's head keeps bright lights and glare out of the baby's eyes. Keep up the great tradition of breastfeeding but please cover yourself properly as a sign of respect to yourself and those around you. You will be surprised how many people won't react badly once you cover up.
The rest of the world also isn’t as advanced and super duper amazing as we are here in America and Europe. They’re actually very conservative when it comes to sexuality and dress. The women cover up and are very modest. This public nudity is very offensive to them. They should do what we say though and stop being conservative because they NEED to be just like us because we’re amazing and everyone should do what we do and believe what we believe.
Load More Replies...The problem with public breastfeeding is that it desexualizes the breast. Some men get turned off by thinking of a woman as more than a sex object, and some women are more than happy to help them with this.
I totally get why she did this...any breastfeeding mums out there had the doorbell ring whilst feeding, or the telephone ring, or the oven buzzer go off??? Of course you have and I bet you simply stood up with your baby and did what you needed to do whilst feeding!!! My baby would be mighty pissed off with me if I broke her latch before she had finished. It was her time to go down that runway and she did what she needed to do to meet everyone's needs....and doesn't that sum up hard working mums...we end up trying to please everyone (but invariably can't, so to the haters I say boo hoo to you and grow a pair!)
I don’t care about her breastfeeding I’m totally supportive. But I wouldn’t do it while I was serving a customer, or presenting a workshop (unless it was on breastfeeding), teaching a class, or a million other jobs, including modelling clothes because its not appropriate. But this is not what this was about. Grow up, stop thinking you’re a victim, give your baby your undivided attention, she is not you’re social media bait. This was all about Mum, these posts always are.
Breastfeeding public does not bother me, I just think that there should be a blanket or towel covering the head of the baby, and breast of the mother. Anyone who has a problem with mom breastfeeding in public with the breast being covered really needs to get bent!!
Do you cover your head with a sheet when you eat?

It is attention seeking. I'm sorry but it is. I'm certainly not against it. Anytime you gals wanna set free a boobie for whatever reason, I'm a happy guy :D. But breastfeeding on the catwalk, that's county fare sideshow territory. Anyway, nicely done !

I wish you could too! So does your little one :0*
Load More Replies...seriously????? like, If she doesn't have a problem with her breastfeeding and her choice to go out, why should some stupid cowardly trolls have a problem. Get over it people
Hate: "a word used because some people are Offended by other people's words, so they brand their speech in an attempt to shut them down." Now, let the downvotes begin.
Load More Replies...Ahh the bad f*****g awful old if it is a boob lose your s**t.... but if it's a shootout, murder, hit and run, vivisection, cannibalism, serial killing, a lunatic running amok stabbing, anything violent without guns involved.... give no f**k!
Load More Replies...If God had meant for us to be naked, we would have been born that way. To bring something SO NATURAL to a place where the unnatural is often displayed... Mara is my new heroine.
Load More Replies...All of you lonely, virgin mothers, what is more important here?Your opinion that only matters to yourself or a hungry baby.I am sure if the situation was otherwise-she first doing her thing on the catwalk before attending to the little, crying, hungry baby, you would still be the first ones to cast a stone, right?Wrong, how about woman exposing them parts in porn magazines, and all JUST for fun and fame, there is something you can smile about, once you can see the smirk on hubby's face.
Load More Replies...This is all a load of dumb here. Apparently during a fashion show, someone responsible for keeping people going down the runway did a terrible job, and didn't have another person swap spots so this young lady could finish feeding her child. Duh! So now it is a hashtag moment? Kinda dumb.
It is attention seeking. I'm sorry but it is. I'm certainly not against it. Anytime you gals wanna set free a boobie for whatever reason, I'm a happy guy :D. But breastfeeding on the catwalk, that's county fare sideshow territory. Anyway, nicely done !
So what I'm hearing you say is that it's okay if a boob is pulled out for you to ogle but not for it to be pulled out for its natural purpose. (~_^) Creepy.
