Numerous Drivers Pull Over To Check On A Black Woman Who Was Stopped By Cops And Was Screaming For Help

A video has just gone viral on TikTok, showing people pulling over to make sure that a black woman who was stopped by Missouri police was treated fairly.

The media is calling the recording “a document of increased awareness and agency” in police interactions, as citizens come together in “a touching and essential” example of communal accountability for each other.

Posted by @sheniweird 4 days ago, the caption reads: “We have to start policing the police until things start making sense. In today’s world, it’s still unfair so here go!”

The video begins with the videographer backing up her car to get a better view of the developing situation.

It is a person’s constitutional right to videotape or photograph things that are plainly visible in public spaces. That includes capturing the work of police officers.

“When I see a young African American woman screaming for help,” the TikToker explained in captions and voiceovers, “And it’s 3 to 4 White Police with guns drawn on her, and she’s unarmed, you damn right I’m showing up and showing out until I find out what it’s all about.”

“We need answers every time. She deserves the same respect homegrown terrorists got. You’re not just gone shoot her over a traffic violation. Not today.”

Eventually, multiple drivers noticed what was happening and they let the police know there were eyes (and lenses) watching.

“When I pulled over, everyone pulled over,” the TikToker said.

As she walked up, a white man in a Subaru (who had also been recording) gave her a thumbs up, indicating that everything is under control.

So a string of cars stopped near the scene, making sure the officers dealt with the woman appropriately

Police activity has been in the spotlight in the US for quite some time now, as the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement continues to protest against police brutality and racially charged violence against black people in general.

Missouri is one of the states that saw its fair share of unrest. On August 10, 2014, the day after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, the town of Ferguson erupted in riots and looting.

Most of the people in the comments applauded the efforts of the passers-by who may have helped keep the woman unharmed.

So far, it’s still unclear which police department was involved.

Here’s what people said after watching the video

If police are doing nothing wrong, then they should welcome this level of visibility and accountability to help reestablish public trust. I believe that the only time people don't welcome transparency is when they have something they prefer to keep hidden.

I got a friend that's a cop and he doesn't mind this kind of thing at all. He does get mad when people get too close or try to block him doing his job, but like you said he view the filming as a way for the world to see hey I'm doing my job and I'm doing it the right way

Undoubtedly, this video does not give the full context, i.e. we do not know what happened before the women was pulled over. However, seeing one car with one women yet multiple police cars gives you the impression that something is strange. But for me, as a European, the strangest thing is to read "unarmed". There should not be a rationale to assume that anyone who is pulled over in a civilised country would be armed, let alone that anone who is pulled over would likely engage in a gunfight. If there is a rationale to assume that, you know what you need to change. (Before anyone screams "you cannot take away our guns if you let them keep theirs": it is not about taking away firearms, it is about the role firearms play in society.)

The cops in the US are so paranoid that anyone they stop could be armed, because anyone indeed COULD BE. Which in turn leads to them being needlessly aggressive and dangerous towards normal, harmless citizens. It's just a viscious cycle.

    1. How do you know she’s unarmed right off the bat? 2. Do you know what led up to the stop that resulted in weapons being drawn? For example, if she evaded, use of force continuum dictates that weapons be drawn, as this is now a” felony stop “.

    1) If she was armed & screaming for help, she likely would have been killed for being highly emotional while handling a weapon because, even if she was afraid, her volume & the fact she had a weapon would have come across as threatening. I can say with a high level of certainty that if she was actually armed, she would have been killed. 2) What do you think an unarmed, frightened woman did to provoke 4-5 policemen to draw their weapons on her? It doesn't matter what she did, because nobody deserves to die that way. The people watching were making sure she would not lose her life that day, & that if she did there would be a clear record of what happened to determine whether there was police brutality or not. Again, it doesn't matter what she did, because in America everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a fair trial, which means a death penalty on the side of the road is grossly inappropriate & unfair whether she ran a red light or robbed a store.

This has to be one of the most inflammatory stories on this site ever. Zero actual information yet tons of confident anti cop speculation. I wonder why there's no Bored Panda stories on the over 100 people shot in our cities this weekend. The loss of young black lives is staggering. Here in Baltimore, over 3000 young black men have been murdered by other young men in the last ten years. One city! Thats a real story. with facts.

Chris, anyone can contribute a story to Bored Panda. Go ahead and write the story you think is missing from the site and submit it, then we can talk about the things you're bringing up. To me it seems that murder statistics in Baltmore and in other cities this weekend are separate things from this story, which is about how some people's view of police actions have changed over the years, and how much more willing people are becoming to question something they're not sure is okay.

Most of y’all have gotten out of hand. Rather than giving officers the benefit of the doubt and asking some questions, you rush to judgement. You refuse to acknowledge the possibility that the female here may have done something to warrant having guns drawn on her. This is part of the problem, not the solution. Grow up, people.

This reminds me of the case of Sandra Bland. She was pulled over for a traffic violation. the cop escalated the situation, and she ended up getting arrested. 3 days later, she was found hanging in her cell. Her death was ruled a suicide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9t1N2wRvjc https://abc7chicago.com/sandra-bland-video-traffic-stop-brian-encinia/5288983/

I will say this, if you decide to pull over and film, stay back. It's for your safety and theirs. For all you know the police had their guns on her because she ran from them. Maybe the car was reported stolen or came back with stolen plates. She could be a person with a warrant who has a history of carrying weapons. For all you know, they've been looking for her for a while. Video everything, but be aware of the fact you are stepping into a situation where you do not have all the information about why the police are there with guns drawn. Most cops do not mind being filmed...it covers their butt from false accusations. Just don't make assumptions about what is unfolding.

A few years back I took a political survey (I Side With) to get an honest idea of my political ideology (rather than my assumed ideology). Turns out I'm 100% democratic socialist. This story touches on some of my deepest held core beliefs. We have to watch out for each other, step in when we see others are in danger and just generally show up for one another. That's how we can create really change. It's a dystopian horror that situations like this even happen at all, and sitting back and hoping the system will correct itself simply isn't good enough anymore. I'm so glad these folks showed up for this young lady.

Sorry man but I am not putting my life on the line for someone I don't know. I have a wife and little girl at home that rely on my to make sure I have power, water, and shelter for them. I pay taxes so that their is a pool of money to put together a group of people who are willing to risk their lives in my stead. Bad police need to be held accountable but I'm not stopping and risking my life. I always remember in Detroit where a 30 something guy pulled over to make sure a stranded car was ok while police were in the distance coming in, the guy shot him because he was tweaking and thought he was a cop and he had just crashed his car. You don't know strangers.

I really don't understand people that don't believe their eyes and ears and factual evidence. Plus The police have acknowledged there are racist aggressive cops in every single precinct. What more do you need to know there's a problem. Does it need to happen to you? A loved one? Is that the only way you'll acknowledge it or is your worldview so threatened that facts logic and reason no longer exist? Like the quanon people flat eathers anti vaxxers. It's so strange when people actively want to believe a lie bc they are comforted by it bc their delicate emotions can't handle the truth. I promise your head won't explode if you comprehend factual information that's what your cult leaders want you to believe bc it benefits them.

Don't turn a situation into more than it was. Assuming or guessing as how a situation would turn out worse does nothing but reinforce the negative even during a positive. The woman was being arrested, people showed up to make sure the cops acted above board, she was arrested without incident, and people showed up to help keep her safe during that incident. It's a story of cops doing their job correctly and people making sure to watch them to keep her safe during this unsure time of police.

The woman who filmed was really far; took her ages to go closer, walking slowwwwly (and never go close enough to check). And please, what is the point with the fake voice thing? I don't get it. I'm just not ok with that. Feels like she didn't really did it for a good purpose. Don't get me wrong, I'm basically the kind of people who does that (checking if people are ok when the situation seems not ok at all) but I definitely would have go closer and faster in order to really check if everything is ok. That's disturbing. (Sorry about my poor english skills, I hope you will get my point anyway)

Well, what she did film (what was filmed) was obstruction. If I was in this mess I’d be beyond pissed at the traffic jam. If there are 2 + police on the scene in broad daylight, they know what they are doing. This was in St. Louis. These cops aren’t stupid enough to risk it.

Maybe in this situation it was different. Believe it or not a lot of black Americans do this to try and scare police and maybe get a bystander to believe them. If you haven't noticed they always raise their voices in any place for any situation. It's their go to thing. So if you're thinking of helping one, make sure you know the whole situation and don't automatically go against the policeman. They have a hard job to do and they're only humans too. If you search some videos online you'll see a lot of situations of cops trying to do their jobs correctly, someone pulls a gun on them, shoots them and some don't make it home to their families. So think before taking sides. Important note, it is illegal for the public to interfere with police in their performance of their duties. So I would call 911 if you really think something is wrong there otherwise if they feel threaten they can pull a gun on you. Know the law.

Stupidest thing ever. Now the Police have to worry about all those people who pulled over in addition to the one person they first pulled over. Who knows who is in those extra cars and what they might do? I bet she KNEW she'd get some kind of reaction from people around her, so that's why she started screaming. The POLICE are NOT the problem. The self-entitled idiots who think they a) are immune from their bad judgement, b) think they can break the law and get away with it and/or c) feel that ALL cops are bad and they must "protect" blacks are the problem. Notice that this only happens to blacks - if the driver had been WHITE, no one would have stopped, even if all the Police Officers were black. And despite the fact that WHITES are shot more than BLACKS are (check the ACTUAL statistics).

You see only "four WHITE cops against a pooooor black african woman" *cry cry cry* yeah. But what about Africans killing other Africans every days in your beloved Americafrica?? Why don't you cry for, and why don't you scream at those bl@ck too?! And.. Oh, look. From your official website: bl@ck killing 25× time more. But yeah, white only, kills. Ahahaa you're so ridiculous, pathetic. And now start with dislikes. I will never care about them. And i will NEVER knee down. Without white, just tell me: what about the science and technology?! If it was for africans, all population should still live in jungles, in house made of mud and leafs...

So, we don't have any idea what happened. It's fine to monitor, but there isn't much point to this. People rarely get shot over a traffic violation. In fact, have we ever heard of that happening? But bad things do happen like George Floyd and Linden Cameron, so the more video we have, the better.

What if the individual they stopped just robbed a liquor store? The police officer’s attention has been diverted because some so called good citizen wants to see what's going on and get it on videotape and the person in the car has an opportunity to take out a weapon and shoot the police officer. Now we have a potentially dead police officer because some do-gooder wants to get these it on video tape. The argument of not doing anything wrong they have nothing to worry about should also apply to the individual that the police officer pulled over. I've grown sick and tired of people blaming the police for everything. Perhaps if individuals had a measure of self accountability many of these issues would no longer exist. 2/2

I think its great that folks are watching out for each other and all, but this scenario could end in alot of different ways.Think about it from the cops POV, They pull someone over. At about the same time, another car pulls over, and someone gets out to record them...then another...and another. So now theres the original person pulled over plus another 2,3 however many others are pulled over as well...Thats gotta make the "piggy" sense of every cop there start tingling. Their trigger fingers get itchy and things could easily go sideways from there. I agree that someone needs to watch the watchers, but caution should be taken to not make the situation worse.

It really ISN'T that simple. What is considered "resistance"? In some cases it is a very normal INVOLUNTARY reaction to being manhandled that is a survival instinct, not a rational choice. The police procedures need to account for how their own behavior is likely to be responded to by someone who isn't trained to deal with being surrounded by people with weapons drawn, and they need to be as calm in their requests for compliance as they expect people to be in complying, as well as providing ample time for their commands to be understood and obeyed, which often they do not. On top of that, the idea of living in a COMPLY OR DIE society is not one that is conducive to freedom. Police are just regular people doing a job, they are not our overlords. We grant them a particular authority, but it is only one that is given willingly at this point with society's cooperation. The abuse that is becoming so apparent may very well change that cooperation, thank god.

I'm sorry but why are commenters always saying "we live in a WORLD....". No, it is not the world that does this, it is the US! Now I don't know about every country on this world but at least in most of Europe these things would never happen. First: Police don't go pulling over random black people. Second: even if, they would never do so while trigger happy holding their guns (if they even have one) and oh so many other things.

Police in European country is racially profiling and targetting people too, it's just not as bad because average people don't wear guns so police don't show them on a daily basis. I remember when i was a teenager and we were passing by policemen checking/harrasing a group of young teenagers/kids who were colored. My mom just rushed near them and shouted "do you want to see my ID too? You want to see my ID? Since you are checking IDs i thought that you wanted to see mine too!". This was in a France. Racial profiling is everywhere in Europe and i think that its everywhere in the world, depending on what ethnicity or color is the favorite target. Maybe they don't pull out guns so easily but the harasmment is real for the ethnicities or colors that are targeted.

one woman to 5 men eh? Yeahhh two months ago it took FIVE people one of them was a female to take down a woman who Only had to just leave the building and go about her day. She fought like crazy and we had to carry her through the building to where she would be waiting for police. Who I might add never would have been needed if she had got up and walked out

So, people want to pull over and help a black person who has been pulled over by the police because they are screaming. Why did the police pull them over? Unknown? Why is the person screaming? Unknown? A possible answer is that she's black and the police officers are white and this is going to get people’s attention. Everybody who pulls over to see what's going on, and to get involved, are not only putting themselves in danger but putting the life of the police officer in danger. The police officer now has to divert their attention to the individual who has stopped and possibly approaching the vehicle and the person police officer detained and they must keep an eye on the individual and the vehicle they just stopped. Try talking to a cop. They all recognize there's racism and aggressively racist cops everywhere they all say they can't speak up in their departments bc they will be at risk for all kinds of things. Bullying demotions other cops will straight up act like you don't exist. Cops should have to go to college like doctors do. It will weed out the ones on a power trip.

Dont be f*****g stupid, everyone now who gets stopped by security or police will scream for help to draw attention and get people to intervene and get in the way. As a white unarmed security guard Ive had black people who had to be arrested for something and I am always the one telling them to calm down and take a breath. While they are screaming they cant breathe and my black and Punjabi partners are being extra with them. Ive also been pulled over for one thing or another and even when I was a young anti authority anarchist in my 20s I would be truthful and admit to things and they would be shocked and happy with that and Id get off with more than I should have. Just act f*****g normal and do what they ask; I see a lot of video of people sitting in cars pretending their are lawyers and the officer just seething and trying to be calm still. Over NOTHING, just speeding or something that wouldnt get you landed in jail if you just rolled down the window and gave them license and reg

Looks like a textbook case of obstruction. People are right. There are some police that racially profile. But I feel there are a lot more that don't. The people that are stopping are impeding an investigation and it's prosecutable. Go ahead and stop next time you see a cop pulled someone over. Let me know how it turns out for you.

It's a very well known and proven fact that black people are targeted by the police and stand a real chance to be shot and killed by them. How did you think BLM started? And on a side note: 120 people were killed after police stopped them for a traffic violation. Looks like you're a textbook case of an uninformed guy who hasn't got a clue what he is talking about.

The voice of the unheard. That's Martin Luther king. If no one listened to you while your family and friends were targeted you'd riot too but you don't have to worry about it. From your race and age you won't ever get pulled over or profiled even though you're the exact demographic that perpetuates the most crime.

If police are doing nothing wrong, then they should welcome this level of visibility and accountability to help reestablish public trust. I believe that the only time people don't welcome transparency is when they have something they prefer to keep hidden.

There's two sides to every story. Could have been dangerous to pull over.

If you see a system you don't like why don't you put on the badge and walk a mile or two in the police officer's shoes?

Try talking to a cop. They all recognize there's racism and aggressively racist cops everywhere they all say they can't speak up in their departments bc they will be at risk for all kinds of things. Bullying demotions other cops will straight up act like you don't exist. Cops should have to go to college like doctors do. It will weed out the ones on a power trip.

Do you really think if they wanted to kill you that your non bullet proof and smash proof window is going to protect you?
