Woman Uses Art To Demonstrate What Types Of Men Are Toxic (10 Pics)

Nothing gets the point across like a good slideshow. And Nicole Tersigni is creating the ultimate one. The comedy writer pairs classical fine art with modern captions, producing timeless pictures that expose the deep roots of mansplaining. She calls it ‘Men to Avoid in Art and Life’.

“I was fed up with the way men regularly explain my own jokes to me, so I decided to make a quick joke about it,” Tersigni told Bored Panda. “I did an image search for ‘woman surrounded by men’ because that’s how that moment feels sometimes, and one of the results was a beautiful painting of a woman holding her bare boob with men crowded around her. I paired it with the caption ‘maybe if I take my tit out, they’ll stop explaining my own joke to me.’ And it eventually turned into a thread with similar classic paintings and modern captions, and people really connected with it.”

Eventually, the thread went viral and literary agent Rachel Sussman contacted Tersigni to ask if she would be interested in making it into a book. She was!

The book went on sale on August 10th and due to an article in The New York Times which called it “razor-sharp”, it sold out its first printing within 48 hours.

The series called ‘Men to Avoid in Art and Life’ has become so popular, it even got its own book

The hilarious situations include men sharing keen insight on the female anatomy and offering advice about horseback riding to women who actually own the horses they’re on

Everything starts with the visuals. “The paintings come first, and I write the joke around them,” Tersigni explained. “I think the funniest jokes take details from what’s happening in the painting, so I like to start there and see what I think is happening based on their faces or the scenery.”

The writer looks for any paintings that have at least one man and one woman, where you can see their expressions. “You’d be surprised at how many classic paintings have women directing blank looks at men.”

She then works a joke around them. “Occasionally, I’ll have a vague idea for a joke and I’ll scroll through all my art until I find a painting that could work for it, but usually it’s the other way around.”

“I’ve spent many, many hours scrolling through art databases and saving any pieces that could potentially work in a huge file on my desktop called ‘Paintings’ because I’m very good at using computers.”

Tersigni is really grateful for the overwhelmingly positive feedback she has gotten since the book was released. “I’ve had so many people sharing their own stories and experiences with me, and telling me how thankful they are for the book.”

“It’s nice to be able to laugh together about something that’s normally very frustrating.”

Oh and Dan Marsh, thanks fr proving my point. The USSR is not "coterminous with the Russian Empire" as at one point the Russian Empire also included places like Alaska and California. Its also a completely different style of governance and until the beginning of WWII did not include the Baltic countries, much of Western Ukraine or Belarus, which had been given to Poland and the USSR NEVER included Finland which the Russian Empire had ruled. But thanks for proving my point by expressing skepticism at my study of something you think is the exact same as Russia because you perused wikipedia.

Maybe the title of the article shouldn't have read 'Mom uses classical paintings...'. Especially given the content. 'Writer uses classical paintings....' seems more appropriate since her being a mom has nothing to do with it. Identifying someone by their status or title in relation to someone else is demeaning. Especially when it has nothing to do with anything immediately relevant.

The first time a man told me to smile to be prettier, I didn't know it was a thing. I only knew it bothered me. If you don't like my face the way it is, then don't look at me.

I am a man, but endured toxic masculinity for 10 years on one of my jobs. They hired an ex-navy lt. commander who retired early as an HR manager. He was convinced that the only kind of man who could work in that chemical plant and perform well was an ex-marine. He hired in 12 of them in the same month to staff a new plant start-up. They had many positives going for them such as maturity & senior enlisted rank levels after 5-10 years' military service, which are hard to get. That much said, they subconsciously formed up into a unit. Their attitude was that to make a crack unit up, everyone had to be ready to conquer Iwo Jima single-handedly. Anyone who didn't buy into their extreme value system and code was unworthy to be a member of such a top unit. I had to put up with their "tough-guy" act, bullying, & intimidation for 10 years. They despised women in the work place, since they were not ready to take Iwo Jima. They despised anyone with any education. It was horrible.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m not you and I don’t have your experiences, but being educated and not holding so much hate and prejudice is enough for me to feel for them. It’s just an iota though, my patience is not what it used to be. Thank you again for pointing out toxic masculinity.

    (1) I would rather see examples of people’s toxic behavior, how to differentiate between the person and the action, if it’s situational, how to react/deal with them, recognize it in yourself, and how to resolve them. That said, how do we know if something/someone is sexist? How do we know if we’re just too sensitive and quick to put a label on something? Is the individual that way towards all genders? Ex1. “Girls don’t...” Ex2. “Boys will be boys.”

    (2) From the oxford dictionary: “Mansplain” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary last month: “Of a man: to explain (something) needlessly, overbearingly, or condescendingly, esp. (typically when addressing a woman) in a manner thought to reveal a patronizing or chauvinistic attitude.” If a male/someone were to explain something to me that I didn’t understand or had asked for help, that would not be mansplaining. If they were to argue with me about the difference between necrotic tissue and gangrene in sepsis, and be wrong and still argue that would be “mansplaining.” If my comments are “womansplaining,” I’m glad to have shown you the difference between the two. That would be sexist though, don’t attribute my explanation to my gender. This is an example of contributing to a discussion and elaboration of a subject.

Oops, I should be enjoying a margarita in my robes right now. People from all genders can spout nonsense, argue over something they have a faint grasp of, can be vile and deceitful. This article is sexist but its value lie in pointing out the toxic, demeaning behavior that people face everyday. You’ve wasted a valuable chance to expand your perspective and understanding of the problems and analyzing contributing factors that prevent change.

I have had to deal with situations like this and I have seen other women have to deal with it. My sister worked at a fast food restaurant and was very capable at her job. Her male manager kept getting mad that she didn't need his help when doing her job. In fact, he got so upset that he called my parents and asked them to make my sister accept his help. I learned my fry cook job pretty quickly. However, the eighteen year old guy who had done the job before me, talked down to me like I was too stupid to do the job. At the pizza place I work at now, my mom got a job there. She learned her job pretty fast and does the job very well. However, one of our younger male managers had the audacity to talk to her in a condescending manner. My mother was fifty seven at the time and this manger was twenty two. Sometimes she would be left in a management position by the manager of the store and one male cook didn't want to listen to her because he didn't think he had to. 1/2

I have dealt with mansplaining. I have never had to deal with womansplaining ever because it's not a thing. When you try to explain something to someone who knows what to do, it's mansplaining. I have never tried to tell any of my male co-workers how to do their job unless I do that job as well and they have asked for my help.

The first six were all about Mansplaining. Surely some diversity could be used. Like I don't know, maybe, "You're the reason I drink so much" or "I ditched my last bitch after ten years together because she started getting clingy" or "if you loved me, you'd do a**l" or "you're sister's a bitch, but throw a bag over her head, and I'd still bang her." Yes, I've heard guys tell women each of these things.

Phrased the right way, I gotta agree. I left an abusive relationship some years ago, and in one form or another I've heard those kinds of examples you just gave, and I know other women who have too. It seems to be at its worst imo anyway when young men are in a group, or "lads" etc engage in that talk. It's kind of a "go along with us in our misogyny or we will call U a gay snowflake" mentality. It's gna take work from everyone regardless of gender, and I appreciate your comment I think it's opening a conversation that needs to be had

This is right up there with random strangers on the trolley expecting you to pay attention to them. Just because I'm a woman does not mean I "owe" you my time or attention. No, I'm not being rude. I think the fact that your delicate little ego needs stroking from an ONVIOUSLY NOT INTERESTED woman trying to read her book makes you the rude one. F**k off.

I have a strong stomach, but I tend to avoid any food that is too spicy or seasoned. Consequently, I have never had heartburn. A male friend was complaining about a meal that gave him severe heartburn. I mentioned I had never had it. He quite casually said, "Oh, you've had it, you just didn't know what it was." I was speechless. He mansplained my own stomach to me.

The first painting is a man teaching the birth of Christ. Which actually was empowering because women were not allowed to learn in those days. Once I saw that and how this woman looks the others I felt sad that all she sees is hate where beauty lie. A man listening to his true love play for him......no she sees a man telling her how to play. How jaded and how miserable she must be.

So tired of man-bashing. "Men are toxic" etc ad naseum. If a man wrote about how horrible women are you'd attack en masse calling him misogynistic, chauvinistic, and "Toxic" but when women go on and on about men you're "liberated" and "independent thinkers". How about some equality.... some people are bad and some are good, regardless of gender.

I am not a man. I find this ridiculous and condescending and insulting. To men. I get it, you think it's funny. But the art you chose for this is not even remotely what you imply it to be unless you put YOUR own spin on things. You also need to look at things in a chronology context. Sorry, but the only "toxic" I see here is the "comedy" writer here. Go ahead, pile it on. I do not care. As I truly am an independent woman who doesn't need to attack men to feel good about myself. Misguided umbrage. Hardly toxic. I see many of these men caring for the woman, being protective, and appreciative of the beauty they are bestowed with. Perhaps today's modern women no longer needs men in their lives to play these masculine roles? I can't believe all women are like that.

Because the volume of idiots working to tear you down and undermine you because of your gender is simply exhausting. Racism has been described as a death by a thousand cuts. Sexism is very much the same.

There is. I often get articles when they are newly released, and decent comments get downvoted, and nasty comments are up like 20 points. Then more actual pandas read the article, and things balance out mostly. It's like the internet is the underside of a giant bridge - lots of trolls desperately waiting for attention And then I read down below Solrac, where you wrote "Womansplaining: recommending articles when nobody requested it" so i gather you are sad that got downvoted for being a misogynist. Tough luck little troll

I don't know what kind of world you are living in but in all my life I literally met one man questioning women's authority. I've had dozens of female bosses and male co workers and literally every single man never dismissed anything women said, interrupted or diminished women's authority in any way. and that one single man is old fart in a cult worshiping "old ways". and some of these happened in reverse situation. it's not about gender. it's about assholes - but you can't get clicks with "people" - it has to be "mEn"

Nope, men do this overwhelmingly more than women. That’s why it’s called mansplaining, and why men commit 90% of sexual assault. And the Karen meme is sexist and has nothing to do with this. There’s a pretty good article on The Atlantic about the Karen meme, I recommend it.

News flash: memes about toxic women, like karen memes, aren't sexist, no more than memes about toxic men and this article. However, using a gender before a verb is a textbook example of sexism, like "mansplaining".

Mansplaining is kind of a gender-specific issue, though. I've seen the accusation used unjustly -- like in anonymous chat fora where a guy brings up a matter which doesn't seem to have been factored into a position -- but there is a phenomenon of men talking down to women as if they must be ignorant of a topic simply because they're women.

Yeah, mansplaining is a thing, I got it. But womansplaining also exists, and I don't really get why it should be overlooked. As a man, I could also do the same as the artist, featuring every time I've been womansplained something I obviously already knew.

If a man wrote about how horrible women are you'd attack en masse calling him misogynistic, chauvinistic, and "Toxic" but when women go on and on about men you're "liberated" and "independent thinkers". How about some equality.... some people are bad and some are good, regardless of gender.

That is not the point. Most men who they don't know women interact with are like that, because most of the polite ones aren't going up to them to talk.

But you go ahead, dear... ;)

She is attacking toxic men because they are toxic. And the context is not the point. You think she really thinks allthese are what is happening in the photo? Wikipedia din't even exist then.

Misguided umbrage. Hardly toxic. I see many of these men caring for the woman, being protective, and appreciative of the beauty they are bestowed with. Perhaps today's modern women no longer needs men in their lives to play these masculine roles? I can't believe all women are like that.

Thanks! We've been overdue for another man-bashing thread. ;) Now, reverse the above and do one about women, then stand back and witness the INDIGNANT HYPOCRITICAL SEXIST OUTRAGE! lol

Hey, when women get paid more than men and are statistically more likely to murder men than other men, feel free. But we live in a patriarchy, so stop feeling so hard done by as a male. Get a clue

By the way I didnt notice where she studied art history to learn the stories each of these tell. Anyone can walk into a gallery and start making glib out of context comments about the works.

That is not the point. They pics may tell different stories, but that is what a meme is. And these are basically relatable memes.

I often wonder why women hate men so much, I think it's becuase of so much man hating articles like this one and videos etc on the Internet and shared on social media. Imagine the hatred the writer has for men that she had to put that much time and effort into the work.

Google paid for all online work from home from $ 16,000 to $ 32,000 per month. The more youthful sibling was jobless for a quarter of a year and a month prior her check was $ 32475, working at home for 4 hours per day, and procuring could be much greater… . So I started…….https://xurl.es/bb72a

I can't really see why it's called "Men" to avoid. We all know people like this from both genders. Just need look at how popular the Karen memes are

This post is sexist. Men are no more condescending than women; women are no more condescending than men. Some people can be condescending. It has nothing to do with gender.

Yeah, mansplaining is a thing, I got it. But womansplaining also exists, and I don't really get why it should be overlooked. As a man, I could also do the same as the artist, featuring every time I've been womansplained something I obviously already knew.

I can’t believe how many bitter men are in the comment. Womansplaining isn’t really a thing. That’s like saying white lives matter too when a black person is killed by police.

Funny you think this is a male/female thing. Literally everybody is an "expert" these days and leaps at the chance to show off their tidbits of knowledge. That's what you get when you put the world's information in everybody's pocket.

Nothing in those painting even remotely resemble the suggested context. Look up that stock videos article where subtitles are added to stock videos that are plausible to the situation and humorous.
