There are a lot of discussions going around today about gender norms and roles. People are beginning to defy them more and more, stepping out of their 'traditional roles' and being who they want to be, instead of what society expects them to be. Photographer Nir Arieli from Israel is helping defy these norms by capturing the feminine and gentle side of men.
The photographer started a project where male models pose, look, and present themselves in a gentle, serene, and beautiful way, instead of the usual way men are represented in media. Nir wants to show the vulnerability and emotions in men with his photos.

"In this project, I try to expose a side in masculinity that I believe was oppressed by society throughout history. Gentleness and vulnerability are beautiful qualities that are not in the exclusive female emotional territory."

don't target long hair. I have long hair I don't know why "boys can't have long hair"

"Through this work, I try to find these qualities in the men I photograph, open a dialog about them, and remind the viewers that they are allowed to feel free and that they are beautiful when they do so."
The photographer wants to show everyone, not only men, that to be your true self is the most beautiful thing ever.

We have many posts where men express their vulnerable side, femininity, and gentleness. Like this man who proves that clothes have no gender by wearing skirts and dresses. Or this guy who wears heels like nobody's business and proves that they're not only for women. Also, you might be interested in seeing examples of pointless gendering that show how stupid it can be.

What do you think of Nir Arieli's project and photographs? What do you think is the idea behind the project? Tell us in the comments the gender roles you run into and how they make you feel. Hopefully, we will one day live in a world where your gender won't define how you have to live your life or express your emotions.

I would have said most of these photos show vulnerability or intimacy, rather than necessarially feminity. Male vulnerability doesn't equate to being feminine - thinking vulnerability or intimacy is 'effeminate' is a trait of toxic masculinity. Unless these models are non-binary, and expressing their feminity, then saying that they're showing 'femininity' isn't helpful - they're showing vulnerability, grace, emotion, beauty, intimacy, gentleness, introspection, spirituality. The lighting and props are more typical of photography using feminine models, but the traits and emotions shown aren't feminine, they're human.
Well the point of the pictures is to show things that society deems as feminine. There is nothing intrinsically feminine or masculine since gender is cultural.
Load More Replies...I don't see all these as being feminine. I see men showing how beautiful they are regardless of the intended audience.
I think that's part of it; we don't usually have the idea that men can be beautiful. You get the occasional beautiful man like Jason Momoa or Idris Elba (ymmv), but as a general rule the best we can be is handsome, and handsome is not beautiful. I wonder sometimes how it affects the average guy having the idea that they will never be attractive the way that women are. Guys with differing experiences, please weigh in
Load More Replies...I find it sad that, in this current time, men are still made to feel that showing emotions like sadness and showing grace etc is feminine (not that there is anything wrong at all with being male and "feminine"). It's human, end of. I thought the photographs were all beautiful personally.
Exactly, there is nothing wrong with being feminine and masculine. Those are all human traits. But it sadly shows how incredibly misogynist society is. Feminine is coded as "woman" and apparently for a man to be like a woman is the "worst" thing. We're still seen as less than for being women.
Load More Replies...Loved all of the interesting poses and shapes created. The beauty of the male form. Not a fan of the ones with spots of color painted on them, but that's just personal preference. All around fantastic photos.
Soooooooo...every pose that does not look aggressive/dominating/martial is considered "feminine"?
Unfortunately yes. That's what living in a misogynist and patriarchal society is like.
Load More Replies...Why are so many of them so blurry- most of them aren't but as a person with adhd it's so hard to look at-
Easy to do when most if not all of these models are likely not straight.
Even if you don't agree with the title about femininity, you can still appreciate the gorgeous pictures and amazing skill of the photographer and the people in them.
Gendering emotions, showing affection, and literally standing there for a photo? LOL Much of this work is really fantastic, but toss the dumb "feminine side" label.
This is so inspiring and beautiful showing a sensitivity behind mens stereotyped thick skin
The title is borderline offensive. Men posing with tears, with affection, with freckles, with long hair is feminine? Reverse the post, is it women posing with hammers and beer are deemed masculine? Do better BP.
They were all lovely. Androgyny is underated. Beauty without definition is priceless.
Except a few like the one with tears, I don't find think of those as vulnerable. Is it become they look effeminate, or more accurately far from the standard of what mens are supposed to look like? They're not vulnerable.
Funny how the post name changed from "feminine side" to "vulnerable side"... BPFV-605a0...9a-png.jpg
This isn't defying anything...men have a long history of celebrating their feminine side...this is NOT a new phenomenon, Christ! Have any of you ever heard of culture club?
Are the only men able to "embrace their femininity" have zero body fat and have a waist size about 28". This is terrible. It shows one type of man ... thin and young. I'm not a "big" man ... quite the contrary ... I'm disappointed.
I would not call these photos feminine. Artistic, graceful, contemplative, beautiful, all of that--but not feminine. One of the biggest errors is showing two men in a "gay" pose and calling it feminine. No, it is not. Homosexuality does not define a a man as feminine, no more than it defines women as masculine. As a dear friend put it, "Who I love does not define all of me." So true!
I agree, but those traits are always coded as feminine. The world is still very misogynist and still separates feminine and masculine traits.
Load More Replies...Article framing sucks. "Man does something traditionally attributed to women! Everyone applaud!" This framing makes it seem transgressive to BE a man and have what are traditionally framed as feminine, vulnerability and an appreciation for beauty.
Thats what living in a very patriarchal, misogynist society is like.
Load More Replies...So the point I'm getting from this is that being gay, colors, flowers, light, and long hair is feminine. The only ones that actually looked feminine and I understood were the drag queen and makeup ones.
Why is long hair not feminine but makeup is? Nothing is feminine or masculine.
Load More Replies...Yes, the title may have been a bit misleading. But, whether or not the photos show femininity, the important part is the amazing photography.
Great, now go do something useful instead of standing around in front of a camera.
