Getting repairs done on your car is never fun. Inevitably the mechanic finds something that you never thought was a problem, and suddenly your perception of your car shifts from cherished chauffer to dangerous weapon. I personally know nothing about cars, so while I’m always skeptical of a mechanic’s suggestions, I don’t have a valid reason not to trust them. One woman, however, knows for a fact that a mechanic tried to swindle her, so she made sure he didn’t get away with it.

Earlier this month, the woman reached out to the Petty Revenge subreddit to share an encounter she recently had with a shady mechanic. r/PettyRevenge, which has 1.4 million members, is for “stories of small victories over those who’ve wronged you” and made the perfect platform for this anecdote. Below, you can read the full story yourself, and decide if you think she handled the situation appropriately. Then if you’re looking for more petty revenge stories, check out this Bored Panda piece next.

While the average person doesn’t know very much about cars, it can be easy for a mechanic to take advantage of their customers. Apparently, it’s a common issue too. A quick Google search yields dozens of pages and articles warning customers to be wary of common mechanic scams. The McCarthy Auto Group has a list of “The 20 Most Common Mechanic Scams”, and the first one sounds awfully familiar after reading this story: routine maintenance uncovers mysterious problems. “For instance, if you bring your vehicle in for an oil change, a bad mechanic might find broken ball joints that need to be replaced, pushing your repair bill up by hundreds of dollars.” While it’s not impossible for there to be underlying issues with your vehicle, if you’re concerned that the mechanic is trying to rip you off, hear them out then seek out a second opinion elsewhere.

MotorBiscuit even has an article detailing “all the ways Jiffy Lube ripped people off over the years”. The consensus among car experts is that independent mechanics seem to be more trustworthy than big chains, and Jiffy Lube might be one of the worst offenders. In 2016, the California Bureau of Auto Repair launched a sting operation investigating Jiffy Lube and visiting various locations with their cars “in tip-top shape with all fluids full”. After visiting 38 shops, the investigators concluded that 37 of them were committing infractions. The locations received a $220,000 fine from the bureau and three years of probation. Telling customers they need a new air filter is apparently a common scam as well. In 2013, NBC4 News caught several Jiffy Lube employees on hidden cameras charging customers for new air filters then never actually installing them.

Most people aren’t able to service their cars on their own and will always need to rely on mechanics. We can, however, visit auto shops a little bit more informed. Don’t be scared to ask questions about anything that sounds suspicious. And remember to check your fluids and filters before bringing in your car, so you know if refills or replacements are actually needed. Let us know in the comments what you thought of this story and if a mechanic has ever tried to swindle you!

Many readers responded in support of how the woman handled the situation

This mechanic and his shop need reporting for the sake of other people who are not as knowledgeable as yourself.

My first thought when I read stories like this is how many others were ripped off. She obviously wasn't the first. I'm not big fan of Google & Yelp reviews because people abuse them but in this case they should be named, shamed, and reported to the authorities.

Happens to my wife a lot. She grew up on a farm so she knows her mechanical stuff. Only a couple of years ago a garage tried to tell her that her car was dangerously low on oil, but not to worry- they had topped it up for her- and tried to charge her for 10 litres of engine oil. She was yeah, right, that's more than even a large farm tractor would need.

We had a shop do the maintenaqce on our work trucks. Was a little suspicious so I had a look under the hood before mine went in. The battery contacts were pretty crudded up, needed a new air filter plus a few other things but I figured if anyhing, they would be cleaned during the visit. Got it back, popped the hood and everything was as it was before I dropped it off. I doubt they even took it into the shop, just left it parked and called when it was "done". Reported it and we found a new shop that was much better. Original lousy guy lost our service contract for 20+ vehicles.

Not quite the same, but when I was in college I was car-shopping with my older BF. I told them that I wanted a 5 speed (back in the day when stick shifts were available.) The salesman turned to BF and said "If you'd teach your daughter to drive a stick, she'd have more options". Um, what? I just said that's what I wanted, and I'm the one buying the car so talk to me. Not to mention I don't hold hands and act that affectionate with my dad.

I had an idiot tell me that an automatic was better on gas than a stick. I laughed in his face. Dude, I come from a looong line of autoworkers, engineers amongst them. The guy tried to double down and I told him to p**s off.

I would have told him that he was going to give me a NEW air filter FREE OF CHARGE because he messed the old one up! (And then taken the old one with me too so he didn’t try to pass it off as new to someone else!)

Retired ASE Master Tech here. I love nothing more than listening to the extended speel about what's needed, then slamming my still valid (I retest regularly) ASE master tech card on the counter and demanding "SHOW ME". These scams happen because of how technicians are paid. It's either lowball hourly plus commission or a flat rate (piecemeal) pay plan. No service-related work should EVER be on any kind of commissioned pay plan. That is a recipe for fraud. Downvote me on this and reveal what you are...

I got the best of a guy who tried such a snow job once. Prior to dealing with this guy, I had had a new muffler installed but they didn't get one of the brackets in the right place so it banged at times. I had also put new tires on but one was defective so that had to be taken care of before the muffler. The guy at the tire shop tried to tell me that my universal joint was going out. When I disagreed, he came up with one high cost item after another. Nope, nope, and nope. I kept saying that I knew what the noise was but he wouldn't give up. I noticed two other men standing nearby who were starting to listen closely to us since I wasn't buying his bull. When he finally gave up and ask what the problem was, I told him that it was the muffler and a bracket in the wrong place. He couldn't say another word but the two who had been eavesdropping were dying with laughter. I can only imagine what happened after I left.

I love stories like this, but knowing cars doesn't always save you money with scummy mechanics. You can know exactly what's wrong with your car and how to fix it but don't have the equipment and the mechanic will pull some c**p and not give you your car back until it's paid on full.

My office changed location and was getting work done on new building. We had to use construction hats. I kept mine with me and kept it in my front passenger seat. I went and got an inspection done (or oil change, it’s been a bit) and it was the only time they didn’t come back with that list of “emergency” stuff. To this day I have that construction hat rattling around in my trunk for these occasions.

I used to bring my car into a "Discount Tire" place to take advantage of their lifetime wheel alignment / balancing but the guy kept questioning WHY I wanted it done; He asked me as if I was crazy for doing it every 30k or so or before a long trip. I got tired of his grief and stopped going after I felt I got my money's worth. I also remember my mother having to change her alternator and maybe some random pump before and it did not fix the issue she was having with her car; No refund, probably some spiel about it being "time to change it soon, anyways" or "about to breakdown" There's been more bad experiences but those are the two that come to mind. From my experience, seems like most mechanics are scum.

Yep, they'll try doing this to anyone. I used to bring my vehicles to a place till they tried twice to rip me off. First time was when I brought my suv in for a tire rotation and they informed me that my shocks were no good. I had installed them the month before. Second time I brought it in because the wheel bearings were making noise and they agreed and gave me the price and forgot they supposedly changed them three months before. Buggers!

My dad had me take auto shop before I could get a drivers license. I did break lines, rebuilt carborater , changed oil, tires and so on. My son was born late, my spouse was in Vietnam. About a month before he was born I was at the base auto shop having the time of my life, replacing head gaskets on a 66 Malibu. Chevel some airmen realized I was sitting in the engine compartment with a belly between my knees trying to fix my car and had a fit. They lifted me out of engine compartment and finished replacing gaskets. But, I knew how to do it.

I took my van to a quick change place after relocating to another state. Told them I'd get out and wait - nope, they told me to stay in the car. I asked if they were sure - yup, I needed to stay in the car. Ok, then. 20 mins later, there are 5 guys under the hood looking around, and the mgr is with them. 35 mins into my 15-min oil change, the mgr comes to me & asks for the manual. I hand it over & ask if he wants me to get out *now* - nope, stay in the car. Ok... 45 mins in, he finally comes back & says, "We've never seen one of these vans before" (it was not rare, just had a peculiar build, it was a commonly-known vehicle brand) - then he asks where the dipstick & oil fill are, b/c they can't find them under the hood. Me: "I'M SITTING ON THEM. DO YOU WANT ME TO GET OUT *NOW*??" (In this particular vehicle, the oil fill & dipstick were located under the driver's seat, accessed through a panel in the floor.) Female does *not* equal stupid when it comes to vehicles.

We need to remember that these people are criminals. They need to be prosecuted and prevented from ever working on cars again. Don't just shame them. Make your call to the police and press fraud charges. The only way to stop people like this is if those who catch them at it are willing to do the work to shut them down.

Actually had the opposite happen, we were offered to use our DIL's car for a trip. She said it was due for a oil change, well before she brought it in ,Hubby looked at the tires, balded as a baby's butt. This was the dealership mind you, they looked it over and their assesment over all didn't reflect the car's condition. According to them, the tires were in the yellow range, so ok for 6-12 more months. My husband said they should have recommended replacing at the last oil change or 6 months earlier. Hubby already had a guy lined up to do it the next day, just couldn't believe the shop monkey couldn't see the same thing. I could see the poor condition, which speaks well for a mire housewife, Ha Ha.

I worked at a dealership during high school and college---first in the service department and then as a title clerk. If I go to buy a car or have one serviced, I feel like the jerks are just salivating the second they see a female. They should be ASHAMED of themselves! Don't they have mothers, sisters, wives, or daughters? It's fun, though, to see the looks on their faces when they realize that I'm not some helpless female. I actually go with family and friends to buy vehicles to save them from high markups on invoices and ridiculous aftermarket add-ons. They wonder why car salesmen and mechanics have a bad image!!!!

I had an oil change done at Pep Boys. Then I was told that I needed my front struts done asap which would cost me more than $1,700 with after market parts price. They also return my car with a flimsy lifeless broken emergency brake handle, r brake light stopped coming on dash board. And said that they didnt touch it. And refused to fix it for free and wanted to charge me for parts & labor to fix it. I took my car back and had it examined by my original mechanic at Toyota who told me that they tampered with my ebrake and took off the nut and bolt. Reason why my ebrake stick was lifeless. And told me that my front struts were fine. A tiny leak but nothing worth fixing right now. I mn the near future if needed i can have them fixed and with original order parts rather than aftermarket price parts which sometimes are not properly built with the correcr parts and likely to brake in less time. My lady mechanic said it was best with original quality branded parts that will last longer.

My lady mechanic said that they probably tampered with my struts and put that tiny leak just so they can scam and charge me for the lump sum repairs. Also I had recently got a complete general car check up 4 months back coz I had planned to go on a long road trip and my mechanic never mentioned any problems with my car's front struts or tiny leak. So Pep boys tampered not only with my struts/leak but with my ebrake stick. All this hassle just for a simple oil change. Never again will I go to a branded repair shop other than my trusted Toyota lady mechanic. Pep boys mechanics are huge scammers! Make sure you have pic proof or mark all your car parts to prove them wrong and make them pay you back with free repairs. I just didnt feel like waiting for a weeks long scheduled oil change appt so instead I stopped in at Pep boys for a quick oil change. Worth waiting for an appt with your trusted mechanic.i learned my lesson and end up paying that hefty repair on my ebrak

Avoid Walmart like the plague needed new tires so we went to Walmart and had them changed while we shopped . Gave us a quote and it was dirt cheap but they said they had a heck of a sale on them so we didn't think anything about it . We also requested an oil change. They told us it would take about an hour. An hour and a half later we came back cart full of frozen c**p. They hadn't even started. We said ok and sat down . 45 min later they said the quoted us for the wring tires and they were way more than we could have bought from any other place . We asked if they had started . They said no . So we said forget it . Then they came back to us 45 minutes later and said rhey had bad news . They had stripped the lug nuts ( if I'm wrong about the name I'm sorry lol) more than half of them couldn't be reattached or have new ones placed and the others couldn't be taken out . Of course they weren't in a pattern that made it even remotely safe to drive . They had also broken something important when attempting to change the oil and didn't tell us . We had to drive it 20 miles home and then another 15 to a local tire place to have them fix it . Driving on It ( they told us it was fine to drive and it obviously wasn't) it had warped something so badly we had to replace the whole tire area and the parts that attached it to the car . They said that there w a set even a drop of oil in the car they had obviously drained it and didn't replace any. The whole repair cost is an arm and a leg and HUNDREDS more than we had set aside to replace the tire and have the oil changed. Eventually the car died because of the no oil thing and the fact they had broken something off when they drained the oil and It had knocked around inside and screwed a lit more of the inner workings up . I ended up 8 moths pregnant pushing a car up hill and into a strangers drive way at 1 am because my husband got caught going to work when it wheezed its last breath on a highway going up a hill and around a curve . He got fired because he didn't give notice even tho this is something he couldn't have seen happening. He had a union and even though he hadn't missed any days except having to call in because we didnt have the car back yet the manager didn't like him and wanted him gone and the union rep was the managers friend . Being 23 and had no relevant experience he thought that was how things went and didn't fight it and he hated that job anyway. So about to have our first Child and down a car and out of a job and no shavings because we paid it all in an attempt to fix the damages Walmart caused . They gave us a coupon for a free oil change and we trashed it . We got 50.00 off of our groceries that day and that was it . We were young and really dumb so we didn't pressure Walmart because they said we had no proof and the damages could have been caused by the other shop . It was a rough and tough time for us . Especially with my baby girl almost ready for her appearance and my car was on its last legs . Paid 1000 for it and had had it years . We left the hospital one time and it started smoking and we just parked it and laughed to keep from crying at our situation....long story and some of the mechanical stuff might be incorrect terms or descriptions but it's to the best if my knowledge and the results were the same . Thank God his family was helpful in getting him a car we still have and love 11 years later

I once watched the guy at the Jiffy Lube pour sand in my filter and then bring it to me and said "look at this" as he shook all the sand out. He said OMG you're gonna need x amount of work at about $500.00. I said dude I was out there smoking a cigarette when you were pouring the sand in there. Now get me a new filter and replace the one my husband just put on there about an hour ago. The box is still on the back seat. He shook his head while his boss reamed him (for show I think) for costing him a new filter. AH

I'm a very small younger woman, and while I don't know much about cars myself, my mother works as a mechanic for a larger chain and a close family friend collects and fixes up cars. I went in one day for a new battery, and had the other mechanics tell me I needed 4 new tires, a new transmission, and new rotors. This guy was fairly new and I hadn't been around in a while, so he didn't realize exactly who I was. Enter my mom, coming up behind them to clock in for work. The wide eyed horror when she went to town on him.... He didn't last long after that.

Some places try to scam anybody. I was home on leave and took my car to a tire store my uncle was the shop foreman and the owner started telling me I needed new axel boots etc… i knew from experience not to believe him and check with my uncle, but the guy rotating my tires looked at me after the owner left and said quietly “sir, you don’t need any of that.”

I used to go to a Grease Monkey in the Seattle area. As far as I know they were legitimate, but they kept coming in with my air filter need to be replaced. They would bring it out to show me, and I kept saying no I don't think so. Finally the third time they brought it out I started saying that looks like the last couple times I brought it in, I still don't want an air filter. They did look a little sheepish every time they brought it out. I bet they were told by management to try to push selling air filters.

It disgusts me that these repair people can carry on such overtly criminal behavior on such a regular basis and they aren't prosecuted for fraud.

This is why I’m so glad that one of my best friends is really good with cars. They look like a 12 y/o boy that knows nothing but they’re a country kid (16 almost 17) and knows a ton about cars and repairs the family cars with their dad so I’m very happy with my friend
