Every country is like no other. After all, until humans figure out how to travel between dimensions or set up space colonies, we only have one of each.

But there are some that stand out from the rest. Canada, with its thirst for maple syrup, hockey obsession, and extremely cold weather, among other things, belongs on this list.

So we decided to put together a collection of pictures that capture the essence of its unique charm, showcasing its breathtaking landscapes, iconic landmarks, and diverse communities.

On the outside, Canada is a vast and rugged land. From north to south, it spans more than half the Northern Hemisphere.

From east to west, it stretches almost 4,700 miles (7,560 kilometers) across six time zones.

But even though it's the second largest country in the world, only one-half of one percent of the world's population lives there.

Canada's far north belongs to the Arctic Circle, where ice, snow, and glaciers dominate the landscape.

Few trees grow here, and farming is not feasible, really. Native Canadians, called First Nations people, live in this region and by mostly hunting and fishing.

The first people to come to Canada are thought to have arrived between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago across a land bridge that connected Asia and North America.

Interestingly, around A.D. 1000, the Viking explorer Leif Eriksson reached Newfoundland and tried to establish a settlement there, but it didn't last.

    MartyMac83 Report

The French and British settlers arrived in the 16th century. Continual land disputes between farmers and fur traders led to four wars between 1689 and 1763.

The final one, called the French and Indian War, left the British in control of Canada; however, French influence remains strong even today.

In 1867, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick combined to form a dominion with its own separate government, parliament, and prime minister.

Manitoba joined soon after and in 1931, Canada became an independent nation.

As the pictures illustrate, Canada is, in some ways, many nations in one. Descendents of British and French immigrants make up roughly half of the population, then there are other European and Asian immigrants, and First Nations peoples make up just about four percent.

Inuit people live mostly in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Many Native Canadians live on their traditional lands, but a considerable portion have moved to cities across the country.

To get an even better understanding of this corner of the world, fire up our earlier "Meanwhile, in Canada" publications that reflect the country here and here.

Back in the '70s, we ran a bar/restaurant in St. John's right on the harbour. Opened up the first patio the city had ever seen and that's where you'd find me on a lovely spring day, just sipping a Diet Coke and watching the icebergs float by what's known as Iceberg Alley. Depending on the size, it could take hours to pass by. Magical stuff.

And they were a good company for a while. Now the parent company, Loblaws, regularly organizes to defraud Canadians by artificially inflating prices. They were caught boosting the price of bread to 2-3x normal about 10 years ago. Now with inflation, you can't trust the weight/volume on any of their products, everything costs 20-30% more, they no longer give meaningful amounts of membership rewards points, and they recently tried to stop selling "use today" items at a discount. Basically doing everything they can to gouge Canadians out of their money.

Look, I know we all love to make fun of how much this country LOVES hockey, but this particular donut shop is Tim Hortons, originally started by an actual hockey player. So, this one makes sense.

It would be only in that one small section to protect the valve openings below. If someone were to skateboard off the ledge at that point, they could damage the ports (or themselves). You can see they've left plenty of space to skate straight by. This is nice.

I think I saw one of these in Japan, too. Should be worldwide, imagine the money these things would make off the people coming out of the bars in the early hours of the morning xD

Because it's at a corner considered to be a hub for the city busses. People transfer busses, and sometimes have to wait 15 min for their bus to arrive. This walk-through is very convenient.

This kind of ice though....this is the worst ice. I vote we declare half days whenever there is this type of Ice. All "productive" day lengths are reduced to the innermost 4 hours to allow everyone enough time to get around and stamp out emergencies as they pop up....and there are little emergencies everywhere.

I do foresee this being a huge problem worldwide as more countries make the switch to EVs. Its why I think self charging hybrids is a better idea than fully electric, at least, at the moment.
