Guy Sneaks Into The Fukushima Exclusion Zone, Posts Never-Before-Seen Pics Of Town Untouched Since 2011

When the Fukushima nuclear disaster struck Japan, residents within 18 miles of the plant were urged to evacuate. Five years have passed since then and the established exclusion zone is still closed to outsiders.

However, human desire to explore the unknown sometimes wins over set rules and regulations. Keow Wee Loong, a 27 -year-old Malaysian photographer, chose to ignore long government procedures and illegally snuck into Fukushima’s exclusion zone, bypassing police patrols and barricades. “It feels like a real-life version of Fallout” – Keow Wee told Bored Panda. Equipped with only a gas mask, the daredevil didn’t fear to expose his bare skin to heightened levels of radiation in order to snap some never-before-seen photos of towns, untouched since 2011.

Gas masks but sandals? No Geiger counter? Besides, there is a thin line between catatrophe tourism and keeping the memory alive as well as between investigative reporting and sensationalism.

I would think the Japanese would understand it better than anyone in history ! That guy knows the risk , and the stores did not look flooded . That place is probably far away from the plant but within the fallout zone . Just a little residual radiation . Not a hot zone .

You should actually look up radioactive fallout rather than just assume you understand it. He has a gasmask. That's really all that is needed. You can literally wash fallout off of you since it is carried on dust and/or precipitation (I assume he didn't get rained on). The danger comes from breathing it in, which he clearly isn't.

"Never before seen" is an overstatement. http://www.podniesinski.pl/portal/fukushima/ There are plenty of photographers that have come to the exclusion zone before him and they all bothered to gain permits to enter the zone and permission from the home owners to photograph inside their houses. Also, untouched? There's construction and decontamination work happening all over the three towns he visited. Most of his photos are no longer even inside the actual exclusion zone. The guy is just using the sensationalism of Fukushima to sell his story and his photos.

I think it's not such a big risk, most of the really dangerous particles wI'll have decayed, the biggest danger would be ingesting (or inhaling ) radioactive particles. He should have a dosimeter and I hope he took his iodine that morning, and decontamination when he leaves. long pants and shoes aren't really going to increase his safety unless I'm missing something, but I'm thinking of it like the radiation that occurs after a nuclear bomb is dropped so maybe there is some other factor that I'm missing.

Normal nuclear reactor fuel like strontium-90 and cesium-137 have half-lives of about 30 years which means after about 200-300 generations it may be safe to return to Fukushima. High level nuclear material is another story requiring maybe 12000 generations to pass. Man would not make it that far anyway so what the hey. http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/radwaste.html

Hello, Please do not support the illegal and dangerous actions of Keow Wee Loong. This kid did nothing new. Photos of these places already have been published by people who did so with respect and not taking stupid dramatic poses. He's stated he had an "amazing" time, and was living out a childhood fantasy. He went to play and try and earn money from a tragedy. These places are not secret. They are barricaded to prevent looting and trespassing, which is what this person did. Here are some photos taken by a real journalist who got a proper permit from the government out of professionalism and respect instead of breaking into people's homes and businesses: http://www.podniesinski.pl/portal/fukushima/ And here are photos of the other 99% of Fukushima, which is beautiful, alive, and active. Trying to move on and improve. If you're curious about what the non-disaster side of Japan's 3rd-largest prefecture is like outside the 20 km zone. http://fukushimalive.blogspot.jp

It hasn't been radioactive since the Rockefeller underwater nuke attack on Japan that caused the tsunami and the sabotage of the nuclear plant to cover for the radiation. Boredpanda should have checked the veracity of the photos before posting this. http://mothership.sg/2016/07/fukushima-photographer-doubted-over-whether-photographs-were-really-taken-in-red-zone

Well, good luck in avoiding the development of cancer... I'm glad it wasn't me. Interesting pictures.

This guy is nuts! If he was going to go at all, he should be in a full hazmat suit. Chernobyl is still not fit for habitation, this place is probably really high on the radiation charts. I think he's going to be really sorry.

The idea is good - but risking so much for those photos - seriously dude? I mean - are you insane or you just try the weirdest way to commit suicide?

It would be interesting if this guy would get a radioactivity test in about a week to see what his levels of radioactivity is.

So, all these comments below pretending that the area is still radioactive. It hasn't been radioactive since the Rockefeller underwater nuke attack on Japan that caused the tsunami and the sabotage of the nuclear plant to cover for the radiation. More and more you all will see evidence that this long-term scare has been just that... A SCARE, and the sheep still just say, "Baaa-aaa-aaa-aaa-aaah"

No faster way to lose credibility than by talking about people being sheep
