Many sibling dynamics can be complicated. These tumultuous relationships may sometimes extend through adulthood, as you’re about to read.

In today’s story, a man suspected his younger brother of stealing his wife’s breast milk and swapping it with cow’s milk. He confronted his little sibling, who denied the accusations and refused to apologize.

The author has yet to find solid evidence but is nonetheless convinced. Feeling confused about how to resolve the issue, he asked the AITA subreddit if he was wrong about making such allegations.

To make matters worse, the little sibling may have swapped it with cow’s milk, which caused a bad reaction in the baby

Cow’s milk poses grave dangers to an infant

Many readers may not understand the concerns the author and his wife had when the infant drank cow’s milk and may also wonder why it caused such a bad reaction.

The couple was fortunate enough that their child only seemed irritated and nothing else because, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), anyone younger than 12 months may experience intestinal bleeding.

Cow’s milk contains proteins and minerals that may be too much for a baby’s kidneys. It also lacks the proper nutrients to aid in proper growth and development.

WebMD states cow’s milk does not contain iron, protein, or Vitamin C. Therefore, most experts only recommend formula or breast milk for an infant because they contain antibodies that fight against potential diseases like ear infections, asthma, Type 1 diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal issues, and sudden infant death syndrome.

Confronting a family member should be done with respect

The younger brother may have felt attacked, causing him to be defensive. In cases where confrontations between family members are necessary, toxic relationship expert E.B. Johnson, NLP-MP, advises doing so with respect.

In an article for Medium, Johnson emphasized the importance of approaching the situation with calmness and compassion. Doing so helps the person feel seen and respected, which may urge them to cooperate more with your needs.

Johnson adds that it is natural for the person being confronted to lash out and feel insulted. But ultimately, you must stick to factors within your control.

“Remain respectful, and let everything else fall on the shoulders of the other person,” Johnson wrote.

Confrontations aren’t always heated, but they are often uncomfortable. Johnson says managing expectations for the person trying to procure information is important. Doing so helps regulate emotions.

“It’s a way of protecting ourselves and a way of building up realistic goals within that confrontation,” she stated.

It may help the author to speak with his brother with more compassion and less judgment. The younger sibling may or may not own up to what happened, but taking the response/denial for what it is also keeps the situation from blowing out of proportion.

He may also want to take more preventive measures to thwart similar incidents that may endanger his child. One way is to change his PIN and deny his brother access to his home.

The man answered a few questions to clarify some parts of his story

I think none of the ppl saying that ESH or YTA have no respect for the wife's instincts. And OF COURSE she's tasted her own breast milk! 🙄 that doesn't make HER weird, like one of the last redditors intimated.

I tried my own milk and it didn't taste like cow milk. Similar, but quite different.

Let's say it is the brother, because honestly he seems like the most likely suspect. OP should be way more upset, as like some of the comments said, drinking cow milk at such a young age could make the baby sick enough to end up in the ER as they can't digest cow milk yet. Even worse kid could have had an allergic shock if they turned out to be allergic to it. This isn't just a "Oh no the brother may be a total creep" situation, this is a "someone actually, albeit unknowingly almost poisoned the baby"

Yeah I believe it can cause internal bleeding. That someone would endager the life of a baby to get themselves off warrants a much stronger reaction. I would be taking that milk to the lab because I would NEED to know if he did this.

Well, it could have been. It seems very unlikely but such things have happened before. Munchausen by proxy is well documented.

It's disturbing that when someone is "awkward," it is automatically assumed they must be "sexually deviant" as well. Such stereotypes always cause much harm. As for the situation itself - if I were in OP's place, I'd do my best to find convincing evidence before making accusations... or get a confession.

A local man was suspected of the abduction of Madeline McCann just because the neighbours thought he was "odd and eccentric ". The poor man was innocent and went through hell until that was proved.

One thing a lot of people actually don't know about human breast milk is it doesn't even look like what you would expect milk to look like usually. It often has color to it and can be in various hues from green, blue, orange, yellow. It does a clear separation when it sits in the refrigerator and would be visually different than regular cow milk. Even without tasting it you would be able to tell most times. I would immediately tell him that he's never allowed in my house again change my PIN and if anyone in the family asks you tell them why

If you're curious about the taste of breast milk you could just ask. I had a couple I'm friends with over when mini dino was still a baby and I pumped a bit for emergencies, but mostly dumped it (I have very good milk supply). He saw the bottle in the fridge and asked me how it tasted. I saw he was curious and told him to go ahead and try if he wants to. We are good friends, so it wasn't that weird and his wife was right beside us (and didn't mind). He wanted to and he did try it, although just a sip or so.

I haven't tasted breast milk since I was an infant, but I would have to imagine that it is delicious to human palate. It is human milk designed to be fed to human babies. If any mammal would find it to be delicious, it should be the mammal it was designed to feed.... 🍼

As a mother of two young children that exclusively breastfed them both, I can attest that cow's milk and breastmilk are ENTIRELY different in taste, looks, and texture. Most mothers taste their own breastmilk too. It's not weird. It's entirely natural for a mother to want to know what it tastes like. And it's how we test to see if there might be an issue if a child randomly spits it up. Even if it is their firstborn child, a baby suddenly spitting up when they never have before is an indication that something MIGHT be wrong.

All the yta comments are idiots who must hate babies or at the very least hate mothers concerned for their baby's health!! OBVIOUSLY the brother drank the breast milk and lied. I don't believe he did it for spite and should be told how dangerous it was to replace the milk with cows milk though. Most boys don't know this. This is why education is important!!

I'm probably as deviant as they come, but when my ex-wife had our daughter, I did not really enjoy the milk she produced. It just seemed too strange to me, and it's the baby's food anyway. This is one time when sharing isn't caring.

While it's likely the brother did it, he doesn't know FOR CERTAIN that he did do it. There's a chance, albeit extremely unlikely, that the breast milk oxidized or the mother did something. Since unless you get that milk somehow tested to know FOR SURE, I'd just change the door code and not allow the brother over alone going forward. I'd let the brother know that I "know" he did something, that he's would never be allowed over alone, and go from there. Again, I personally think he did something but if OP isn't going to really blowup about it, then this would be my move, I think.

The YTAers are totally wack. Who else would have had the opportunity to switch out the breastmilk for cow's milk? The brother has SERIOUS issues, and should not be allowed to be around his niece unsupervised.
