Man Threatens Divorce Over Baby’s Hair Color, Wife Laughs In His Face When Results Come In
Waiting for your child to come into this world is a time full of wonder and anticipation, which often involves trying to guess what the baby is going to look like.
When this redditor gave birth to a blue-eyed bundle of joy with blonde hair, her husband went into shock as both of the parents were brunettes. His wife tried to explain it was genetics at play, but the dad did not want to listen and chose to take a paternity test instead; only to receive an “I told you so” a few weeks later.

The color is determined by the pigment in our hair
The OP shared that she tried talking some sense into her husband, saying that it was genetics that led to the unexpected color of the baby’s hair. The husband didn’t want to listen, but the redditor was right; because of our genes that are passed down from generation to generation, children might be born with hair or eye colors the parents didn’t expect.
According to LunaDNA, the color of one’s hair is determined by two types of pigment, eumelanin and pheomelanin; abundance of the former results in darker, brown or black, hair, while the latter colors the hair orange or red. Every person’s hair contains some eumelanin—the darker pigment—low levels of which result in lighter hair, while high levels lead to darker colors.
The fascinating ways our bodies are programmed mean that people with an abundance of tightly packed eumelanin will have black hair, while those with tightly packed pheomelanin—red hair. (As a matter of fact, the latter is reportedly the rarest hair color in the world, with Ireland and Scotland being the countries where you are most likely to meet individuals with fire-colored hair.) As for blondes, they usually boast a very small and thinly dispersed amount of eumelanin.

Tens of millions of people globally have taken a paternity test for one reason or another
Even though hair color is inherited, passed down through a person’s DNA, certain gene variations can determine that it differs from that of both the little one’s parents. A child typically receives 46 chromosomes—23 from their mom and as many from dad—which determine their looks. However, sometimes the parents unknowingly carry an unexpressed hair color gene that they can pass to their kid. That’s why sometimes the color of the child’s hair differs not only from their parents, but from their siblings, too.
For the OP’s husband, such a lack of resemblance was a cause for concern; to such an extent that he even asked for a paternity test. For one reason or another, millions of people every year seemingly do, as by 2017, the number of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests exceeded 30 million globally.
In the redditor’s case, the test results proved that what she was saying was the truth; hence, the “I told you so”. And even though she soon started wondering if she was a jerk for uttering these words, fellow redditors in the comments made sure to let her know that she wasn’t.

WTAF??? I really hope she divorced this POS! She needs to get out of this toxic relationship as it's not going to get better. Genetics can be funky at the best of time. My husband is a redhead, but all his family have dark hair. There was an Irish branch generations ago and his great-great grandfather had red hair. Myself, I was born blonde and my family all have dark hair, my hair changed when I was about 7....it's now mousy brown (well mostly grey as I'm 53 lol) but holy hell, I feel so sorry for this poor woman having to deal with a newborn and healing whilst he saunters off to his mummy....the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with this one.
My wife and I both have brown hair and eyes. Our son has reddish blonde hair and blue eyes. So what? My father was a blue eyed blonde and my mother-in-law was a redhead.
Load More Replies...His grasp of simple genetics is so feeble that he probably thinks that child looks like his side piece
Load More Replies...Which father, for the love of God, goes to stay with his parents when his wife brings home a newborn? Are there any redder flags than this one? This man should grow a spine and be a husband and a father, not his parent's doormat! This is a make-or-break moment: if he doesn't shape up, it's better to rid yourself of him, because it won't be getting any better, only worse. Oh, just for the record: OP is so obviously NTA. It's a bad sign that she even feels she has to ask.
My baby looks nothing like his father and we have to look far up his family tree to find blue eyes. He said genetics were odd. His mother asked 'where did that come from' (part as a joke) and accepted the answer. Final point. The guy and his mother are trash, egoist, unsupportive idiots.
You don't have to go searching for blue eyes. I'm going to present the ultra simplified version - it's more complicated than this, but for 'An Introduction to Basic Genetics' it works. Each person has two genes, one from mum, one from dad, that determines eye colour. The blue gene is recessive, and a person needs to have a blue from each parent to show with blue eyes. If they receive one blue and one brown, they are going to be brown. Two browns also show as brown. For your child, it sounds like like both you and your husband have one blue and one brown, and you both passed on. (Again, this is an oversimplified explanation, but it gets the basics across.)
Load More Replies...He's lucky all he got (so far) was an "I told you so". I would have given him the paternity results and the divorce papers at the same time.
This. Op took it far better than many would, and this idiot screw it more!
Load More Replies...Some things the husband could have done differently: > Googled the f*****g thing or asked a doctor so this whole situation never happened > Say something along the lines of "I know you won't cheat on me. But I don't want to live with the doubt crawling at the back of my mind and ruin the relationship for the both of us. It's not a problem with you, it's a problem with me," instead of threatening divorce. > Supported her throughout the whole situation instead of letting his mom threaten her as well > Apologized and showered his spouse with affection to take responsibility instead of running off to his mom
OP, you need to give serious thought as to whether this is a relationship you can/want to save. This is a divorce-worthy offence. It's not only him asking for a paternity test in itself - there are relationships with strong communication and a trust-but-verify stance where that is survivable. Doubts can poison a relationship and make it hard for him to bond with the baby. How he handled it - the divorce ultimation, followed by leave-and-run-home-to-tell-mummy part is unacceptable. Not staying to work through his doubts and support you is kind of a killer, as is spreading your private couple issues to the inlaws. The only acceptable reaction to the results would have been him showing abject relief and apologising for his doubts and thanking you for setting them to rest.
I guess I cheated on my husband while sleeping then, as our kid is blonde with green eyes while my husband and I are both dark haired and with dark eyes /s
Sister and B-i-l have similar situation except their oldest is a (started out strawberry blond) redhead with (started out blue) green eyes and their baby is like them.
Load More Replies...Shitcan that manbaby loser's a*s. He can live in mommy's basement permanently after you take him to the cleaners, since he loves running to her so much.
I was born with blue eyes and was blonde for the first two years of my life. Then my hair turned brown, and my eyes became hazel. The husband is TA.
As far as I know, and I have five kids, you can't tell the color of a babies eyes at birth. They all start off as a weird, murky, newborn color. Their hair, can change to a whole new color too. Three of my kids have blue eyes, while their father's are brown, and mine are hazel. Why? Because, we each have a parent with blue eyes, and a sibling with blue eyes. Two of them were born with blondish hair, one turned dark, one turned red. At best, this man and his mother, are idiots. At worst, they are a-holes, especially the mom, who's been around long enough to know better.
That MIL should do some soul searching!! Not having any idea how awful she reacted to her DIL. And the doubling down when the apple of her eye comes home with the tail between his legs!! An apology is the least she should do.
I wonder if the momma's boy would have acted like this if the baby was a boy. Just curious........🤔
This man is not only dumb af ( genetics don't work like this), he is also a total jerk. I would divorce him on the spot
Sooo.... He was offended and insulting when the baby was born and now he's offended and insulted to find out the baby is truly his? And both times his attack dog mama threatened and berated OP? Neither of them have any respect for the blameless mother of that child. She is well rid of both of them.
What is going on with the poll question. Where is the "husband is a complete A-hole and deserves an almighty nut-kicking" option?
Both my kids were really blond when they were babies, despite both hubby and me having dark brown hair. However, my MIL showed me pics of my hubby when he was very small and he was also very blond and my mum (who also has very dark hair) showed some pictures of her when she was a baby - also with blond hair. So I think it's quite common. Also, OPs a husband is a d**k and she should consider whether she really wants to stay with such an AH.
NTA. You need to leave your boy child of a husband. He obviously doesn't care about you to leave you alone for weeks with a newborn, Also your Family in law is horrible you are the one that just gave birth to a whole a*s human. You need to get out of that toxic relationship. You should divorce your husband he's not likely to change.
"He threatened to divorce me if I didn't comply" That's exactly when she should have ended this marraige, there's no coming back from that.
I would have done a damn sight worse than laugh. It is not okay for people to be allowed to graduate with such an attrocious understanding of basic genetics. This is antivaxer/flatearther level stupid.
Also, is he cheating? He jumped to that one pretty quickly considering he "trusts" you enough to marry, make a baby, and plan a life with. The same thing happened with my child, first born, blue eyes, blonde hair, both me and dad are dark hair dark eyes. Guess what? For both of us, we have half of our family members with blonde and blue. If he even made a joke about this I would be outraged. Also the mom is super toxic. I'd be setting up some boundaries around her.
Very common for babies with European genetic heritage to have blue eyes and light colored hair at birth. This used to be common knowledge. I was born blue/blonde, wound up green/brown as an adult. (Now I'm white blonde again.)
My son came out with black hair and eyes that were almost deep purple. 2 years later he has my husband’s bright blue eyes and long eyelashes, and my unruly blonde hair and cheekbones. I really hope she gets a divorce. This man is so pathetic that he definitely isn’t logical enough to be a father. I mean… ‘Wah, Wah, my kid is mine!’ What the F*****K!
How can some people be so incredibly stupid about genetics and the way babies look when born? My son had dark dark brown hair and blue eyes when born, and 2 years later its auburn red with brown eyes. Like it happens, thanks genetics. Her and her husband probably carried the blonde hair and blue eye recessive gene and happened to be the perfect combo for baby.
My mother in law is Japanese, my father in law is white, making my husband is 50% Japanese. Our son is totally white and looks nothing like his asian looking cousins. The genetic toss up tossed out the Japanese genes. There is no predicting what children will look like based on what the parents feature, especially when they are newborns. The husband and his mother are awful and they would have to fight for visitation after the divorce. He abandoned his baby and his mother tormented his wife while she was healing from birth.
He's the one that should be apologizing. Not you! For him even thinking that you were unfaithful, I would never be able to forgive him if I were you.
I hope she keeps the messages them and the paternity test and file for sole custody, child support - it seems like she's the bread winner since his mom said they would take her to the cleaners if the child wasn't his - and maybe alimony. Divorce this nut. PLEASE don't get pregnant by him again! You see how he is.
Any man (and his B W I T C H of a mother) who did this to me, I would have divorced him promply and taken HIM to the cleaners.
As has frequently been said regarding current US politics, an accusation is a confession. I'd give pretty good odds that he's been fooling around.
He’s projecting his guilt of cheating to manipulate the situation so he can “justify” his actions. He’s definitely trying to leave while not looking like guilty party.
What an irrational and cruel thing to do to his wife, and what time he's lost with his newborn baby. I bet he's had someone in his ear feeding him these suspicions, and when the baby came out looking slightly fairer than what he expected, he probably took that as confirmation that he or whoever he was listening to was right. What a shame to throw away his family over such nonsense. There's no fixing this - even if she takes him back, neither of them will ever forget what happened.
Even disregarding the blonde hair (which can darken), white babies are almost always born with blue eyes! It's a thing! This guy needs to do some serious growing up.
me and my husband both have dark hair and dark eyes. all of our kids have blonde hair and either blue or green eyes. we know who on each side of the family has those features. genetics are wack, just go with it. i cant stand men who are so uneducated that they would believe their spouse cheated rather than pick up a dang biology book. i hope she leaves him. he deserves to be laughed at.
You *kicked him when he was down*? They BOTH kicked you when you desperately needed help. He's not good father material and his mother does not deserve to be called a grandmother. Please see a lawyer and take HIM to the cleaners. He ABANDONED his family! So NTA!
am I the only one who thinks he wanted to break up and just started this dumb s**t as an excuse? because he's clearly not man enough to express his true feelings and motivations, so when the baby came out it was an easy lie to latch onto?
I was born with red, wavy hair. By the time I was 7 it was blond and straight. Two years later it started turning brown, where it stayed until it grayed. Genetics happens. I hope she dumped him.
UPDATE!!!!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/AITAH/comments/1b4rtw9/update_aita_for_telling_my_husband_i_told_you_so/
She did divorce him, right? Blond hair and blue eyes are recessive genes that only happen when both parents have the genes and they're transferred to baby. There's no way you could stay with someone that stupid, is there? I meant he's a s**t husband and his mum's a piece of work too, but stupidity alone is enough to divorce him.
I have pale skin, very dark brown hair and green eyes with a dark blue ring around them and am 5'5".My Husband has olive skin, blue eyes and is blonde and is 5'11".Our kids have...(F)Dark ,auburn ringlets, very pale skin and hazel eyes ,5'8"...(M)Very dark curly hair and brown eyes, olive skin,6'7"...(F)Olive skin ,blonde hair, blue eyes 5'4"...(F)Olive skin, light brown hair and eyes that are wedges of green, hazel and brown with a dark blue ring around them,5'11".Genetics are weird.OP should leave the man-baby and his over stepping mother!
I had light blonde hair through childhood until I hit puberty, then it turned medium-brown, so regardless of what hair color a child is born with, it can change...
I'd have slapped him so hard and asked for a divorce. I hope she's aware that he's doing what he accused her of doing. Cheating. Lady, get a lawyer.
I have dark brown hair but my hair was blonde as a child. The same as every one of my siblings and their kids. I hope she divorced his butt and he never sees that poor child.
I say, stupid husband needs to stop listening to his mummy who is clearly the one behind the request for the paternity test. Toxic MIL
NTA and sorry sweetie, your hubby is displaying classic examples of projection. Yes, someone has cheated, and it's not you. For him to have such an extreme reaction? With no history of your ever having cheated? He didn't stop for one second to check with the doctor about genetics? Has he never heard about the internet? Yeppers, not only has he cheated but MIL knows about his ways, which is why she jumped to the divorce and taking you to the cleaners. She knows that her son is an AH. By the way, everyone in my family was born with blond hair, blue eyes, I was born with black hair, green eyes. Over 50 yrs later my DNA genetics say my parents are my parents, never was a question. You have a cheater and a stupid husband. Get a better one.
Your husband needs therapy for his trust issues among other issues and your mother in law needs some serious boundaries from you if she has any hope of seeing her grandchild. She and your husband owe you a massive apology and changed, respectful behavior towards you moving forward. If my partner accused me of cheating and left me on my own to deal with a newborn while healing from the aftermath of birth, that would be grounds for divorce, but that's just me. You and your child deserve better. Demand it.
Sounds like Manchin is in need of a divorce and a through cleaning out! And mommie doesn't need contact with grandchild, she will never believe the test results and will take it out on the child. I would bet money she is telling her baby that you somehow fixed the test results
My dad has really dark hair and eyes. He had light blue eyes and light blonde hair from birth to about 5 years old. Genetics be weird
if I was her I would order some divorce papers along side with that paternity test
What an a*s. His mom can keep him. Dudes really need to pay more attention in biology when they talk about genetics. Wonder what he's been up to while hiding out at his mom's that made him try and make her the bad guy after the results. If his mother is like that too, that is not a family I would want to be part of.
I really hope she leaves him and never lets him see his daughter ever again. I would go ballistic if I married someone who behaved like that after I had just given birth!
Sometimes it's just better to have a little extra trust. My dad has a brother that is taller and darker haired than the rest of the family and looked nothing like any of them. This year I met with him for the first time in 25 years, and he looks EXACTLY the way I remember my grandfather looking.
I'm half-Japanese and my hair was SUPER light colored when I was a kid. It turned black as I got old, so this really does happen.
My late parents had jet black hair and dark eyes. One of my brothers and I have reddish blond hair. I have hazel eyes. My husband has brown hair and blue/grey eyes. My two sons have that reddish blond hair too (mostly in their beard) but were born with black hair with blue eyes (don't all newborns have blue eyes???) but now they both have brown eyes. My daughter has blonde hair with hazel eyes. In any case, whatever the guy did (abandonment, abuse, etc.) is cause for divorce. On top of what her MIL did, OP is in an awful situation; that will not stop there. I would have laughed in his face too.
She should've showed him the door the second he mentioned a paternity test. If he's not only an idiot but an idiot with no trust in his wife, then I say good riddance.
I don't think divorce is the way in this matter, but clearly a Strike One situation.
My brother and I as kids didn't look like either of our parents but we did look like each other. (Seriously, people would ask if we were twins despite the age gap and the fact that identical male/female twins aren't possible barring genetic anomalies.) F-forward 40 years and I look exactly like my dad's sister and bro looks like someone just used the same mold for our grandfather, my dad, our uncles and him!
