Agreed, people got so bent out of shape when reporters used the word "looting" in Hurricane Harvey. There were many people who gave up their entire life to save another including people they didn't even know. This person should have been thankful the only thing they had to give up momentarily was there truck.

Marines are active duty, retired, or a veteran but never an ex or former.

My daddy served in the Korean War as an aircraft mechanic. He is 87 now and although a little confused and forgetful some days (Mild to mid dementia) he says the exact same thing. Once a Marine, Always a Marine. He even makes special allowances for Navy meds that serve Marine units. He says they count as Marines too. They even wear dress blues like Marines.

My grandfather served in the Pacific as a Marine during WW2. He was a Marine until the day he died two years ago. I imagine he's happy to be reunited with the brothers in arms he lost in Pearl Harbor.

All the time, work and training they put in, after everything they've done, sacrificed, they've earned that title. It molds who you are, everything you've learnt and done becomes you. Being a marine, or even a doctor, you've earned the right to be recognised as such.

I think he's more than earned that title of marine.

There is also the FACT that ex-marine is reserved for someone who was dishonorably discharged. This is the vernacular of marines. It matters.

Nope. It is identity. He is a Marine. That means something, a lot of something, to him. It's like being a priest: you don't stop being a priest. And you don't stop being a Marine. You can fast-talk the language about active duty soldiers, but the moment you take on a polite little tradition like that, you'll get pushback.

Becoming a marine is a transformation that is earned, as is becoming a physician. It is an integral and important part of their identity. It is something worthy of pride and respect. Full Name, you might want to consider why something earned through so much hardship and dedication is supposed to be held in high esteem.
