Happiness – isn't that the thing most of us are striving for? The problem is, though, that not a lot of people nowadays feel happy. Young people are particularly disillusioned; according to the 2024 World Happiness Report, the young are the least happy age group of all.

This generation faces an interesting irony: the world has the resources to make life better and more comfortable for most people, yet most of us are still wildly unhappy. Communites like the Lost Generation subreddit reflect this sentiment pretty accurately. So, here are some posts that echo what the current generation thinks of the world and their place in it.

Most Americans want at least some form of subsidized health care. And from the outside it's easy to blame American voters for the state of our country. But what you have to realize is that our democracy is an illusion. We actually have little to no voice. Our politicians are basically hand-selected and purchased by corporations and the mega-wealthy. The people we would need to fix the problems in this country are the very people who are benefitting from them. We can try to protest but our police have been militarized and they can and do arrest, assault, and even kill protesters. And I'm convinced our "live to work" culture is 100% designed to keep us too busy and burned out to get any kind of real movement going. Things here are more bleak than most non- Americans are aware of.

Sure, why not? The outcome really will be rigged this time, but we may as well go through the motions. Remember - people without ethics believe that everybody else is just pretending. Every Republican accusation is a confession. They've been announcing for 8 years that they intended to rig the elections as soon as they got the chance. Now they have the chance.

We have been brainwashed since birth that the US is #1, and it is in one category only - our prison incarceration rate. We're taught we live in a democracy. We don't. Technically, it's a constitutional federal republic. Realistically, it's a caste system and the driving force is capitalism. And as long as Americans continue to buy this fallacious propaganda the longer it will take to fix the broken systems, from education to health care to housing.

We were looking at selling mom's house to pay for her deathbed. Many insurances only cover things for the benefit of extending life, care during terminal cancer does not fall under that. It's so messed up we were told it was a blessing that she died only an hour after losing coverage . We need a healthcare civil rights movement.

One head just rolled, and you saw how the entire ruling class shít themselves, and couldn't decry it loudly enough while simultaneous pretending to not understand how and why it was such a popular bit of open rebellion. But still they collectively rushed to start fixing... what? Oh. They rushed to hire bigger armies to protect the other corporate mass murders. We need a resistance movement formed from terminal cancer patients. It's hard to stop people who truly have nothing to lose.

Unfortunately "doing everything you are told", is a recipe for living in the wage-slave class. Rich people have to have others doing things, as there isn't "enough" to go around [ie, if everyone is rich, who does the work?]. We were all sold a bill of goods, yet people still fight each other for rich people...as if THEY will "someday" be rich and want to have those same privileges they don't have now. Talk about people not voting in their own self interest.

Same. And my mom must have had amazing insurance as she was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer in February, 2011. She passed November 30, 2012 and did the full gamut of everything offered. She didn’t have to exhaust her saving, 401K or anything and we had nothing needing to be paid upon her passing. Granted, she was an ER Doctor and had been at the same hospital for 34 years. But I don’t think that in itself had anything to do with it. She had her work insurance and my dad’s through the State of Oklahoma. 🤷‍♀️

If we were to believe Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we need our basic physical needs met in order to be happy. That includes food, shelter, stable income, and good health. Sadly, not all Americans have that. In fact, a whopping 37.9 million people were in poverty in 2022 in the U.S.

If the original Lost Generation got its name from living through two world wars, this current generation calls itself 'lost' because we feel that the system is rigged against us. As stated in the description for the r/LostGeneration community, we "did everything our parents told us to do... now what?"

One of the reasons experts say people under 30 are so unhappy is social media. The U.S. surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy told The Guardian that as of 2024, there is no data proving that social media is not harmful to children and adolescents. He says that governments having no regulation of social media for children is "insane."

It's not just the young people who are perhaps overusing social media. A typical user spends from two to two and a half hours a day on social media sites. Experts are saying that the prevalence of social media has contributed greatly to an epidemic of loneliness and isolation.

"Kids going through puberty online are likely to experience far more social comparison, self-consciousness, public shaming, and chronic anxiety than adolescents in previous generations," he noted.

However, other reaserchers are seeing a more nuanced picture. They say that the unhappiness of young people comes from economic uncertainty. One in three adults ages 18 to 34 in the U.S. live with parents. Many of them do so because they can't afford their own place to live. According to The World Economic Forum, student loan debt and stagnant wages also contribute to a lack of financial stability for young people.

Youth unemployment rates are also high not only in the U.S. but in other developed countries as well. The age-old "Get an education and you'll get a sturdy job" rule also often goes out the window. Joanie Bily, chief workforce analyst at Employbridge, told CNBC that many college graduates are taking jobs that have nothing to do with their degrees. "They’re looking to enter into the workforce and launch their careers, and many of them are taking jobs even in leisure and hospitality, because that’s where the jobs are."

Living in LA, I see a lot of homeless people ride the trains without paying (there are certain stations where this is incredibly easy to do). As long as they're not causing a commotion, not bothering anyone, and not smelling to high heaven, there's no way I'm going to tell the authorities about it. They're just trying to get by. Now, the people in nice clean clothes (who very obviously aren't homeless) who do that, I have no problem with reporting.

Those men beat that person up because they fully believed that person intended to rape a woman in the bathroom (If there's a different thought process behind their actions, please tell me because I don't see it). Their own actions belie their belief that men can't be trusted in private spaces with women because the man will rape the woman given the opportunity. What does it mean when a group of men believe this so much they beat up someone who was just trying to relieve their bladder?

I paid $700/mo for my first apartment in the mid 90's in CA on an income of $35K/year. That same apartment now leases for almost $3K/mo. I have NO IDEA how people afford that. That's more than my mortgage payment!

Met a retired couple on a cruise ship that was living on the ship. They booked the cruises for years, and only had a PO box for mail. The cruise line would even ship their stuff to a new ship if they wanted to change locations. They could get off the ship and stay in a port until the next time the ship docked, and get back on. They loved it.

Collapsing birth rate is the biggest threat to ... the wealthy being able to continue to exploit the poor through low paying jobs with shoddy working conditions and the constant threat of unemployment and/or homelessness to scare us into submission.

Some of us so called boomers DO know what's happening and the majority of us DO care about how younger generations will achieve what we achieved. Many of us are helping our children onto the property ladder, many of us have adult kids living with us to help them achieve their goals of home ownership. Please stop knocking all of us just because some big gobbed person made a snide comment.

This is so true. I am Gen X and managed to buy a house on a $50K salary twenty years ago for $190K. That home now is $600K to buy. My salary did not go up by 300%. Young me would never be able to have afforded that house now. I can understand things are far worse for my daughter but my mother cannot. Drives me bonkers.
