Guy Tries To Fight Against Birds For 4 Years, And It Gets Funnier With Every Pic
Once birds find an attractive place to nest, high up away from predators, ideally with some shelter and a little warmth, they will go to great lengths to keep it. I mean, wouldn’t you if you were in their position?
Imgur user atomicrabbit2 discovered this to his cost, after moving into a lovely new house with a cozy gas heater. The exhaust was nicely tucked away in a corner, presenting an ideal place for birds to settle in and make themselves at home. And so the bird wars began. Envisioning a simple solution to his problem, atomicrabbit2 started off with some basic bird blocking techniques. Needless to say, it quickly escalated from there and continues to this very day, 4 years later.
Scroll down to check out how it all unfolded below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
“My 4-year battle with birds”
“So we bought a new house. This house has a nice gas fireplace and the exhaust was tucked neatly away near the back door. The problem was, the little nook appeared to be a perfect place for birds to nest because of the protection of the roof and heat from the fireplace”
“August 2014: The first time I noticed the little guys, they caught me off guard, but thought nothing of it. They were just trying to keep warm, I figured. They startled easily and flew away whenever I would walk in/out of my back door, which scared the shit outta me. At first I ignored it, but they started shitting and building a nest INSIDE the exhaust”
“March 2015: Next spring, I decided to wrap the exhaust in chicken wire (Iteration 1). I was proud of the tidy, little wrap I did, patted myself on the back and figured that was it…”
“May 2015: Apparently it wasn’t. They found a nice little crevice on top of the exhaust to build a neat, little nest. Ok fine. No babies, so nest is gone. Easy enough”
“The bird came back the very next day. Cleared it out and they didn’t seem to come back for the rest of the season. Awesome!”
“May 2016: ….”
“Ok this is getting annoying. So I added bird spikes on top which I figured would keep them out for good. NOPE. They came back with a vengeance. It not only didn’t keep them away, but the spikes seemed to stabilize their nest. This time they brought coloured twine! I cleaned out the nest, next day they came back with more blue twine. Cleaned it out, and THEY CAME BACK AGAIN WITH MORE GODDAMNED TWINE.. They must have had a stock pile somewhere”
“June 2016: HA! You want to f*ck with me? Fine… MORE BIRD SPIKES, B*TCHES! No way they’ll build anything no—
“May 2017: F*ck”
“July 2017: f*ck f*ck f*ck”
“Wrapped the entire opening at the top”
“I’m smarter than you, bitc—”
“May 2018: what the absolute f*ck??! HOWWWW???!! So apparently, I left a small opening on the right side. Those birds were flying up into their now high-end GATED F*CKING COMMUNITY!”
“May 2018: Meet Dr. Who. He scared the hell out of those birds and they haven’t been back since”
“July 2018: closing the gap on the right side just for good measure. They gave me a run for my money and it’s not pretty, but after 4 years, lots of bird shit and 6 iterations, I think this will be the final one. If I see them back next year, I may just give in and try to charge them rent”

Share on FacebookI have tons of birds around my house because I have a heavily wooded lot. I welcome them along with the chipmunks, bunnies, deer & squirrels. Why begrudge them a cozy place to nest? Yes, they poop on my deck a little and I hose it off. Big deal.
well thats fine. But they were causing a fire hazard for this guy. Not to mention possible droppings coming down the pipe.
Load More Replies...I was rooting for the birds. If they like that spot so much and work so hard to neighbours, they deserve a bird bath and feeder in their gated community.
I feel ya, OP. And might I humbly suggest....offering them their own tidy home, more attractive than your vent, and maybe a screen/sheet/panel to stop the poop from polluting your porch? Just needs occasional cleaning and the karma would be sweet.
I don't like nitpicking but I'm going do it anyway. Unless things have changed drastically in the last few years that exhaust system is against building codes and illegal. (Clearance issues) I'd be more worried about carbon monoxide and fires than the birds. You've been lucky so far but.......
Oh, things have changed drastically in the last few years. The biggest changes started around November 2016.
Load More Replies...I myself went with something similar 2 years back, but the pigeons were so stubborn that they keep on building the nest in any nook or corner they can find. Eventually I had to buy a plastic snake and hang it with a wire, that solved the problem and my frustration of 2 years. P.S. I don't hate birds, but the s**t and all other mess it becomes too much to ignore.
Absolutely. It's also very unhealthy to be buried in birds' poo.
Load More Replies...All I could think of was Bill Murray and his gopher troubles and I could just imagine OP blowing up his house only to leave that part with the 'gated community,' and the bird, behind.
You do know that they are very smart and can figure out quickly that the owl is fake. It took the little pests in my vegetable garden about a week to figure out the owl was fake. At first, they would not even go close. Then, the week after the rabbits were eating my veggies about an inch away from the owl as if to say “hah, stupid human. Take this!”
On the other hand, this could be a darn smart bird. The heat from the exhaust is what may have actually been attracting it for improved nesting conditions. Besides, it is being protected from wind gusts and not easily accesible to predators. Eliminate one or more of the attractive factors and the bird itself will vacate. The owl approach directly tackled the "accesible to predators" factor.
I'd stop before putting on spikes and let them build nest on the exhaust, but not in it
Yeah because have an endless supply of bird s**t right outside your back door is every home owners dream.
Load More Replies...Plot twist: Dr. Who befriends the birds and opens the cage for them. The owner: F*** that, I'm moving out!
will, i have a similar perch by my front door. only took me 90 minutes to get the right amount of chicken wire and staples from home depot to surround the entire thing with the wire. Worked brilliantly. So 4 years should tell you about your brain versus a bird brain.
We people destroy bird habitat daily. They need all the help they can get, food and shelter. You can spray the area with the hose (1part bleach to 10parts water), toss the nest, of course, first) after they leave. They will be your friends. Whistle to them. Put bird feeders up! You'll fall in love!
At the same time, on Facebird, there is a bird complaining about a human who kept building stuff around his nest.
it's going to be funny when the birds figure out the owl is fake and build a nest on its head.
I fight against the cats in my city to protect the birds that live in my house. I'm tired of having cats slaughter them.
1) Exhaust vents should never have openings that face up or are not covered with a cap to keep out rain (and birds). 2) The exhaust vent should not be getting hot enough to cause the nest items to begin to burn. If it is, you have a much larger problem than bird nests. 3) Maybe try to work WITH nature instead of against it?
I had problems with Swallows making dirt nests above front door. We enjoyed it till we found out how much poop was created by 4 little baby birds. And stepping on it at 530 am when trying to get to work was just not going to work. End the end I taped ziploc bags with color matched brick tape and they never came back. I can understanding why there are just certain places birds should not nest.
Good thing he wasn’t battling Barn Swallows. Those things are engineering genius’. They would have built the nest on the outside of the chicken wire. I have battled those for years. Finally I gave up.
yet another article that was a waste of time and not funny in the slightest
Those mourning doves are annoying! I have a battle every spring with those darn things trying to build a nest right outside the bedroom windows in the eves. If they weren't so noisy and didn't sh*t everywhere, which for some weird reason the ants love - I wouldn't mind. But when they keep "cooing" loudly at o-dark-30 every morning, and the amount of nasty droppings on my porch - they had to go. I used peppermint spray (apparently, they hate the smell) but it doesn't last. I put up those bird spikes, (they did start a nest between the spikes), tennis balls with eyes in the place where they want to nest, and then filled it with aluminum foil balls. I think they finally got the message.
I figured out right away that the cage you built needed to go all the way to the ceiling. You could have saved yourself a lot of grief if you'd done it right the first time. I received this bit of advice from an old Native American by the name of Johnny Hits-Thumb-With-Hammer.
Those were doves, not pidgeons! They come back to the same spot every year - my neighbor has had the same pair return year after year for I can't remember how long. Except for the bird s**t, they're wonderful little things and very pretty!
An entertaining account of what I too have experienced in my home for the last couple of years in my new house. Doves have made a nest in a corner above one of the columns at my front entrance. The nest is not near an exhaust vent or other critical areas, so I have elected to leave them there. It has not been a problem so far, just interesting for conversation.
I like this post. I am especially interested in animal birds and their research, I write research on them on my website. https://www.discoveryandinvention.com/
I used to have a cardinal that would knock on the glass storm door. He'd sit in the porch and knock on the door. Id open it and he'd fly up ans scare the tar out of me. I tried fake snakes, owls, getting rid of the reflection, nothing. I think m he just wanted me to open the door.
The solution was to put a box beside where they liked to nest so they would go there, not make a huge mess and lose your mind.
Those morning doves are DEDICATED! I had a pair who came back five years in a row. I decided to embrace them (not literally) and named them Harry & Izzy (after a friend's restaurant). I named all of the babies. I cried like a lunatic when some big black monster bird came and ate a clutch one year. And I cried when I moved and had to take the (very expensive) ladder that they'd nested on for years with me. Didn't use that damn ladder for five years! LOL!!! I miss Harry and Izzy. I hope they're ok.
Why didn't he put in chicken fencing up to the soffits in the first place ? The owl was a nice touch.
Neighbours complained to the housing office that I was feeding the pigeons. Office replied "Of course she is, we gave her the bird food. She's the only person who said yes to a trap" Cute birds got rehomed, racing pigeons got sent home. The council put up spikes, too skinny for wide ledges, pigeon security fences that helped nervous birds not to fall. Even got to see baby pigeons with little spiky hairdos, after birds got really sneaky and hid under an overhang so I didn't see the eggs til too late (had no idea when they were laid, so left them).
They want u to decide building an apartment for them, in a low cost rental fee
Arghhh! SUCK IT!!! You win... Here. Take the key to the main door... Me's a give up now!!!
Those are mourning doves, not pigeons. (pigeons are a kind of dove though). I put up one of those owls, a high end one with a moving head. Worked for a while but a year later I took a picture of a pigeon sitting on its head.
My fellow pro-birders! Fight alongside the birds in the great four year war!
Hipocampelo: I've found doves to be so persistent that I've become fond of them. I even feed them.
Build a cover that keeps the bird-poop out of the vent, and then leave them be. You will be happier with the sound of doves cooing in the background of your life.
It would have been better for both humans and birds for the guy to build a secured place for the birds, and doing some perfect garded wire around the heat exhaust. Win win ! After all, almost all birds are in danger now because of us humans !
I love all these pet animals and birds and love to see them around.
I'm surprised the birds weren't killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, especially when they built the nest inside the vent. I've found dead birds more than once inside dryer vents and chimney flues..
It is a funny problem to be had for sure. Although I can imagine the problems they can cause. I hope you have resolved it by now. If not, build a catwalk up to the edge of it, make a nice cozy spot with a carpeted board at the top and then get a big barn cat. One that loves hunting birds! I bet that would work the trick. Sometimes the old ways are the best way.
This is kind of my story also, BUT I gave in and my bird deterrent has become a haven to two little eggs. They found the one TINY corner I missed and overnight built a very flimsy nest and laid egg number one. Number two came a couple of days later. Mum and dad take care in sitting on their babies and I figure I have around two months of nesting, hatching, fledgling and flying. Must try harder next time!!!! 😂❤️🙏🏻
The spirit animal meaning of nesting turtle doves is an omen of divine love from the great creature, the source, the great spirit, god so to speak. It signifies that you are being heard and supported by the love of god. It’s unfortunate that you saw this as a battle and disconnected yourself from nature, instead of an opportunity to help Mother Earth and her little creatures which god has breathed life into just like it did onto you. To remove the nest right before she laid eggs means she will most certain die of egg bound. To me this was unnecessary as there is always a way to help nature without putting your home and health in jeopardy. Cover the vent and build an adjacent shelf. Close enough to keep warm but not creating a hazard for your home. More often it seems man enjoys destroying nature out of arrogance and ignorance, than embracing the opportunity to help her and honoring the roll of being a caretaker of Mother Earth. God and Earth are one.
That guy spent 4 years building a nice cage for the birds XD Why not just buy a birdhouse for a much better price?
I have a heavily wooded lot. I welcome them along with the chipmunks, bunnies, deer & squirrels detail......www.inkprofit.com
I'm worried they will nest on the couple of spikes left sticking out of the chicken wire...
If they ever come back again, find a Quailer. There is a reason you never find pigeons in a quail neighborhood. Quails are aggressive toward other birds, very territorial. They are larger and will break the eggs of an interloper. The best part is that quail don't roost near people. They wouldn't stand for a nest near a doorway. We have had quail in our neighborhood for many years and the pigeons have never returned.
Pretty sure they're Mourning doves, anyway, why doesn't that person figure out how to co-exist with them, as opposed to driving them out to die?
Load More Replies...Several years ago my grandmother got squirrels in her attic. They did some minor damage - of course to my Christmas stocking. (It was repaired shortly afterwards.) The exterminator trapped the squirrels and released them way out in the woods, and in the meantime we found the opening where they got in and had it closed off. Ever since then, if somebody seems crazy we say that he/she has squirrels in the attic.
I have same problem with spiders, they just love my flat. I hate killing them so I just put them in a jar and throw them out then clean their webs. But they keep coming back. I can't throw them out that fast. So now I kinda gave up. My flat is not for people who have fear of spiders I almost have a farm. But at least there are no flies or mosquito so well, that's something.
This is the kind of suffering you can laugh about, without feeling guilty about it. Hah.
I had mud swallows start to build nests on my home. It became a real battle because every year they bring back more and more with them. And they are aggressive and territorial, dive bombing if you walked nearby. So I'm on team homeowner. Had to concoct some interesting contraptions to keep them away. The reflective ribbon in trees works for awhile. Didn't have to get to owl level thankfully.
In my little central European country most people are happy if mud swallows build their nests on the houses. Actually they are protected by law and they are very useful, eating mosquitos and other insects.
Load More Replies...I had a problem with barn swallows, at my office. Started tethering helium party balloons to move around in front of their nest. They moved.
It's impressive how you kept adding until you got it right!!! I have the same problem with birds nesting near my front door. Going in and out of the house we were frightening them especially when they have little ones in the nest! Sometimes they charge at us! My husband tore down the nest but they were back the next day, he kept tearing them down until he gave up! To make matters worse my mother in law commented how those birds were for good luck. Great, now there really is no way my husband going to take it further. Just have to deal with their c**p!
fForget it, pigeon are the worst and annoying birds, when they decide a place, you have a true war with them, it can take year before they leave.
What's so crazy is these birds are idiots! When a nest is removed it means danger and birds don't usually return same with cobwebs it sends a message that this place isn't safe. They just didn't care?! Then again they built the same neat for four years for no babies??? :'-)
They are far from stupid, get some informations about them ! If they are persistent, it's because in the wild, if you just give up at the first unsuccessful try, you're dead !!!

Almost spat out my coffee reading the part of them having a gated community LOL
A friend of mine has battling nesting robins. He finally hooked up a stereo playing 24/7. No more birds nesting on the house! (Yes, very rural area, and no close neighbors!)
lol Those are mourning doves too, cute but annoying. We have tons of them where I live. They have a really irritating call.
Just get a pet snake. Solved. (Note to Sheldon Cooper: its just a joke)
I felt your pain with everything you are trying, we had loads of pigeons in our previous property, I ended up getting a plastic owl like yours and moving it every night, so they thought it was moving and would get them. It kept them at bay until we moved, now we have wood pigeons which toot all day long.
This story was a great way for me to start my day. With laughs! Happy TGIF everyone!
I feel bad for the birds. On the other hand, pooping in the vent is not one of their best qualities.
I don't understand why a simply nest and life could you bother you more that all big ugly staff. Birds inhabite also the Earth, it's not only yours, FYI.
In my experience it's not so much the birds themselves that are an issue as it is them pooping down the vent (which smells and can cause health issues) or worse yet, falling in and dying in the vent. I always want to cry when that happens.
Load More Replies...These stubborn birds are doves, and you do NOT want them around your house. They destroy other birds' nests, they kill baby squirrels *which may or may not be a bad thing*, and they leave an unholy mess wherever they do. ///// If it were robins, then it would be no big deal. I would welcome barn swallows or purple martens.
Every spring we get pretty little bluebirds in our neighborhood. They are so beautiful to look at..... until they start dive bombing you every time you try to mow the lawn, or children come running into the house screaming because they tried to ride their bikes down the sidewalk and were dive bombed by bluebirds. Morning dogwalkers, beware if your dog needs to stop and poop by one of the mailboxes where those little stinking bluebirds have made a nest! (also...pick up your dogs poop but maybe wear a suit of armor) lol The bluebirds like to nest in the newspaper boxes and they are very protective. Swoop down with a vengeance on anyone walking nearby.
