Kim Kardashian’s Crash Diet To Fit Into Marilyn Monroe’s Dress For Met Gala Causes Major Backlash Online
Lili Reinhart was seriously frustrated with those who went to extreme lengths for Monday night’s Met Gala.
The “Riverdale” actor shared a series of rants on social media where she called out the “stupid, harmful celebrities” who emphasized the dietary measures they took just to “fit in a f***ing dress.”
“So wrong. So f***ed on 100s of levels,” Reinhart wrote in her Instagram story. “To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala. When you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word. The ignorance is other-worldly and disgusting.”
She didn’t mention any name, in particular, however, her comments have been interpreted as a jab at Kim Kardashian, who attended the event in the vintage gown worn by Marilyn Monroe to President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration in 1962.

Kardashian told Vogue she lost 16 pounds in order to fit into the gown, which was on loan from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum and cannot be altered.
“I tried it on and it didn’t fit me. I said, ‘Give me three weeks,'” she explained. “I was determined to fit [into] it. I haven’t had carbs or sugar in about three weeks.”
In the days since the Met Gala, Kardashian’s remarks have drawn a flurry of criticism, with many calling her dieting “extremely dangerous.”
“You should not be celebrated for losing 16 pounds in 3 weeks,” Yahoo Canada lifestyle editor Elizabeth Di Filippo tweeted. “You should not share details on how you unhealthfully lost weight with a major publication.”
Fashion journalist Amy Odell added: “If that’s not the regressive messaging this industry has tried desperately to distance from, what is?”

This topic is especially important to Lili Reinhart who has been outspoken about her own struggles with body image.
“Reminder to myself, and to all — you don’t need a flat or perfectly toned stomach to wear a crop top,” the actor tweeted in March. “These ‘summer body’ trends are toxic. Your body is ready for summer no matter what it looks like.”
But not all of it was supportive

After Reinhart’s remarks made headlines, she clarified that she’d chosen to speak up “because I don’t see enough people with large platforms calling out toxic behavior in our industry.”
“Some people will never understand where I’m coming from and that’s okay,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of speaking up

Reinhart wasn’t the only one who had a problem with Kim’s crash diet. Nichola Ludlam-Raine of the British Dietetic Association thinks portraying such a regime was “irresponsible.”
Furthermore, Ludlam-Raine said it would be impossible to lose 16 pounds of fat in three weeks.
Much of it would have been water and glycogen, a form of stored carbohydrates, lost when someone stopped eating sugar and carbohydrates but regained when they resumed.
Kardashian’s comments were potentially “dangerous, especially to vulnerable people” and sent a message that was “completely wrong”, Ludlam-Raine explained.
“It’s really irresponsible because a lot of people will be reading and watching her, especially people with eating disorders, or young women, thinking that it is possible, or it is needed, to lose such a dramatic amount of weight in a relatively short amount of time, when most health experts recommend losing around 1-2lb a week,” Ludlam-Raine said.
“It’s not a sustainable way of living. When you cut out sugars, research shows that we end up psychologically craving it more – and what that can lead to is a binge-restrict cycle.”
Lili’s words really struck a chord with people

“She said afterward she was going to have a doughnut or something like that. We want to pull people away from this binge-restrict cycle, and actually show people that they can have the food that you love in moderation whilst achieving whatever health or weight goals you have in mind,” Ludlam-Raine continued.
Ultimately, it’s not about sending your body on a rollercoaster ride but rather finding the right balance. Healthy eating for your body and your soul. “It sounds like she’s done neither over those three weeks prior to the Met Gala,” Ludlam-Raine said.

The weight loss issue aside, the difference of elegance and class between Kim Kardashian and Marilyn Monroe is staggering. The dress on Kim just looks plain and ordinary.
Right? The bleached hair looked awful, to be honest. She could have worn a wig... And the dress did not look good on her. It was ill-fitting, the colour did not compliment her at all, very bland in general
Load More Replies...First off, ignore the freaking Kardashians. Please. Second, there was serious spandex involved under that dress for KimK. Not a single wubble anywhere? Third, way to insult Marilyn Monroe. Geez.
And Kris Jenner dressed like Jackie now that was distasteful and insulting

I used to go to BoredPanda to escape the "celebrity onslaught". Can we please stop giving the Kartrashian cult a platform? They have contributed nothing in the way of art and culture. BoredPanda is going the way of Cracked. Only clickbait. Plus 90% of the posts are just the top posts of different subreddits.
Load More Replies...Comparing KK's behavior to that of an actor losing weight for a movie is ridiculous. Actors start preparing for a role like that MONTHS prior, with dieticians and nutritionists by their side. They don't just "throw out carbs" w***y nilly. Simply because a part in a movie doesn't just require you to walk down a red carpet, but to be on a set up to 10 hours a day, remember lines, run around etc. You can't do that if all you did was basically not eat for three weeks. Also: KK should have NEVER been given access to the original dress. Wearing a replica is paying resect to the original. Wearing the actual original is the opposite of that.
If someone were to lose weight this rapidly for a part in a movie, it would also be bad.
Load More Replies...Because sadly so many people continue to give them platforms (I'm looking at you BoredPanda) and worship them like goddesses. It is absolutely mind-boggling to me.

This is correct, her a$$ is still too big, so she had to hide it.
Load More Replies...Have you ever read anything about any of the Kardashian's and thought, "Wow, what a well thought out and intelligent action?" I still don't give a flying fück about any of them, beyond making it a personal cause to abhor and reject everything these attention whores stand for.
There is really only one person who looked stunning in that dress - MARILYN MONROE. It was made for her and only her. She did not wear spandex underwear and was not afraid to show that she had a slight tummy. No one must ever wear that dress again and most definitely not a kardashian. She cheapened one of the most beautiful - inside and out - in an industry that chews real people up and then spits on them.
Please don’t get mad at me but I actually don’t hate her for this. I kinda don’t care.
IMO this is a personal problem, she’s not responsible for us,

Not Kim, we're screwed up to even pay attention to that kind of "celebrities." And yes, who the **** took the right to loan Marilyn's dress?! It's for the museum. We don't take Michelangello's David to our bathroom to play with.
Crash diet aside....is anyone else floored by the fact anyone let this happen?? It would be less disrespectful to set the dress on fire and drag it through a sewer
That person should never have been allowed to wear Marilyn Monroe should never have been allowed to wear that dress in the first place. She could afford to have a copy made. Disgusts me. I don't care what the woman does to herself. She and that family should just leave everyone alone, they have no claim to fame other that being famous for being famous. (Yes old people, I am referencing the Gabor sisters.)
Wasn't Marilyn Monroe supposed to be a little "thicc" for her time? And if so, how small were women back then if a Kardashian has to lose weight to fit into a dress belonging to a woman considered to be bigger than average?
Marylin was about a size 8 in modern clothing, in her time she was average size. She was considered thick by people in the 80s,90s, etc looking back at her compared to the thin standard of their time. Supermodels up until recently were size 0. Kim is very thin except her fake donkey butt and fat injections. She was probably trying to reduce her cartoonish enhancements rather than be a smaller person. Proportions rather than weight were the real issue.

They may have wealth and fame but it strikes me it's a miserable existence of constantly needing to divulge anything and everything to remain relevant. Just my opinion but the public very much feeds this from buying the magazines, clicking and watching , that's what feeds the media circus. Anyway here I am commenting, time to disappear back to my normal pleasant life. My best advice don't buy tickets to the circus !
Meh. Idc what celebrities do for themselves. It doesn't affect me.
This was handled rather inappropriately. This kind of dieting is very unhealthy for the body and for the skin (ironically will lead to a cosmetic thing of wrinkles). In addition as a celebrity this is a very terrible especially if people look up to Kim. A very bad role model here. If ya want to adjust one's physical disposition healthily for health or other personal reasons, plan months to years in advanced to ya' can eat well & reach your personal goal. Of course prior to this is to speak with your physician so it can be done safely (acclimation of the body and mind). For example if you plan to cut alcohol don't go cold turkey as it can be fatal! Be educated and honest with your physician on your goals. That sort of thing.
So a magazine that makes money off of womens bodies in the us puts on a fashion show the very night 50% of the population looses their bodily autonomy and nothing. Nothing
Ok how about listening to a dietician, nutritionist, doctor, or professional gym trainer for advice on weight loss than celebrities I mean come we are giving them unnecessary attention for no reason
How about having a copy of the dress made—-that actually fit her—-instead?
Load More Replies...Honestly, if it makes her feel good then good for her, people love to hate on the kardashiens cause it is easy but maybe I'm just weird but there seems to be bigger issues. Also this comment section is filled with people slandering Kims appearance, what happened to all the body positivity stuff and how this is a safe space, bunch of hypocrites really
Would you say the same if it was heroin instead of starvation? "If it makes her feel good then good for her"? You're really shallow. Losing weight in itself is not the issue and if that's what you got from this you're not intelligent enough to share a meaningful opinion.
Load More Replies...I had made it my goal to keep hiding every article that showcases this family. But why do I feel like every site like BP loves bringing them up every chance they get? My effort is becoming more and more futile.
How else is she going to stay in headlines, after all plastic lives 4ever but she won't. Ppl give her too much credit u no this woman never exercises or diets, millions r for nose jobs, boobs,a*s ect. Her kids r going to be the same. Marilyn looked 10 million times better without trying.
I don't care about Kim Kardashian, but I don't hate her either. I'd be more pissed about her wearing the same exact 60yo dress from what's considered an icon?? (if I cared about that kind of stuff). If she wanna lose 16 pounds or 20 or gain them, that's her problem. I found scarier the sentence that affirms that there are people that actually look up to her as some sort of role model. Even if she didn't lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks to fit in a dress, it's still kind of crazy that people look up to her in any other sense.
Tone deaf, vapid. Kind of makes me feel sorry for her though. I mean she has everything in the world and still obsessed with body perfection. Like she can never be thin enough or perfect enough. That’s all that matters to her, which is sad.
Kim will never hold a candle to Marilyn, and Marilyn didn't have much class either. I can't believe this piece of social trash was allowed to wear this dress.
It's not hypocritical to be pro body positivity and be against what someone does with their body. I think the person who tweeted that is confusing body positivity with controversial views on body autonomy. Body positivity is against harming bodies.
Exactly. Body positivity should never promote harmful behaviours purely for the sake of appearance.
Load More Replies...I agree that it is harmful to promote and glamorize crash diets and rapid weight loss.
Marilyn Monroe wasn't a god. It doesn't matter who wears her dresses. She was an addict and a sad person who didn't love herself. I don't think she was very nice either bc she f**k sang to the president in front of his wife and the whole country knowing she was having an affair with him and her brother. Stop worshipping celebrities.
I hope they wash that dress or burn it after. Beautiful dress which went from a beautiful woman to a brainless uglyass sausage.
Tf is wrong with you? Before you call someone ugly look in the mirror.
Load More Replies...Planet Earth has developed a slight eccentricity in its orbit. Marilyn Monroe spinning in her grave.
Wow. The succubus must have stopped feeding on ignorant rich people to fit in that dress.
Yet the dress looks basic on her. It's giving fashion nova. You can buy 10 million dollar worth dress but you can't buy class. Now it's no longer Marilyn Monroe the last person to wear that iconic dress but unfortunately Kim Kardashian.
Wow the drama… this dress is so special that losing 8kg is really nothing. Lilly really needs to stop trying to adjust the world to her own view. Kardashian has the freedom to do however she pleases. This is really rubbing me the wrong way. It’s fine as long as you do what we do, but don’t you dare say or do something we don’t endorse. We will blow up in your face like a mine in Ukraine.
Note to self, buy dress that I’m willing to starve to fit into in 3 weeks. Make sure I can return it in 30 days. That way when I lose the weight, I can wear the dress, then return it and gain said weight back. Cool 😎
Hmmm… Note to self, buy dress that I’m willing to starve myself to fit in. Make sure I can return it if I can’t actually starve myself because foodies are yummy and it’s just a damn dress. Ok, next diet please
I wonder how much PR these boring Kardashian people pay to be on every platform for copying a style from the wrong era at an event that used to be glamorous.
That woman did not deserve to be anywhere near that dress, let alone wear it. Zero class and disgrace to Marilyn’s memory. Nothing is sacred anymore
First of all, why in he!! Is that dress at a Ripley's Believe it or Not. It should be in the Smithsonian. NO ONE should ever be allowed to wear that dress. And then the bleached hair and drop earrings. Just when I thought she couldn't get any more crass, she keeps moving the bar. And the weight loss thing is an example of crazy and dangerous, all for her vanity and ego.
So what happened to her huge tuchus? I guess she got the implants removed.
I have never in my life felt like defending Kim Kardashian before but I have to say her public embrace of her natural voluptuosness means that it's a bit unreasonable to be going after her for 'toxic' levels of weight loss. We all know Marilyn Monroe wasn't skinny and it is crystal clear from the photos of Kim at the Met Ball (however boring people think she looks) that she's in no way too thin, or even approaching too thin. She's not dehydrated either, it would show on her face if she was. Most likely her a*s was too big for the dress because that's where she's kind of out on her own body-shape wise.
16 lbs in three weeks is what they're going after. Kim is not natural. Marilyn was taller than Kim and sewn into that dress she embraced her naturalness and going thought to be seen as intelligent everything that Kim is not. She should've never touched that dress.
Load More Replies...People getting mad at KK for wearing the dress. That's misplaced fake rage. Shouldn't you be directing your faux outrage towards the museum that owns it for loaning it out? Oh wait, why should anyone care what they do or don't do with property they own?
The Kardashian’s want all the credits without putting in the actual work. I’m a self made billionaire - no your Daddy was rich & involved in a high profile case, then Mommy married an even richer man. It was just like a role - you have no serious acting credentials, you cannot sing & act, all you can do is take the p**s out of yourself on prime time tv for more 💰💰💰💰
Now that dress has been tainted by a Kardashian. I really wish society in general would get over the Kardashian-Jenner girls. SMH.
I know we as a society have this idea of what the perfect body is and if youre someone in the public eye you should be a certain way for the next generation and so on.. But really we are all so flawed with our own perfect imperfections that looking to this actress or any other that has a job in front of a camera to be what we think they should be is just never gonna happen. A good self image starts in yourself and in your home to your children and trust me. We all screw it up. But live and learn. Bad decisions set the bar for better ones. Lets worry about who we are as individuals and less about what everyone else's mistakes. Hi. I'm Katie. I screw up on the daily but I strive to do better. Its really all we can do. No sense getting feathers ruffled over something you can't control.
That can cause SERIOUS ISSUES- side note; And these people are trying to influence our lives and our kids!!! Nope not okay they are trashy people ( imo) and idk about anyone else but during the pandemic hearing about the new mansions they were buying while sooo many people were struggling to survive- and are still - it made me sick - I've NEVER watched nor support that family -- others idolize them- I get that- but I don't think they should -- that's just me
I hate that she wore the dress because it's disrespectful of Marilyn who was an absolute icon. Kim is wearing the shawl because the dress wouldn't zip up. They should have just gone with a replica.
The Met gala is the rich and powerful peacocking for each other to gain points in the social pecking order. The issue isn't that Kim's behavior is inappropriate for a role model. The issue is she's seen as a role model at all.
All diets aside, that dress still don't fit- it's too long for her. I don't think it was comfortable. If she wanted to wear this dress so badly, she could just buy replica that fit her.
She's also wearing the shawl because the dress would not zip.
Load More Replies...I think the bottom comment said it really... I mean yeah it's probably not that healthy, but at least she didn't pretend she either always fit it, or she just cut out chocolate and went for a 5 mile run every day and the weight magically fell off... I gotta admire the honesty
Can't believe I have come to the defense of this woman. Hey guys, you know who else thinks that because of their feelings they can tell women what they should or shouldn't do with their bodies? Yeah, Republicans. Oh, Karens too. Way to go, you self owned.
Not eating carbs and sugar is not a bad thing to do. I haven’t eaten much of either for at least twenty years now because they don’t agree with me. I do indulge in good quality treats now and then but overall I don’t miss that stuff much.
I'm no fan of any of the talentless wonders in the Kardashian family but so what? Practically every bride in history has gone on a crash diet to fit into a dress. Who actually cares?
Why is it so wrong that she wanted to fit in a dress? People need to stop being triggered by everything... nowhere in the interview she said, that it's a good idea to starve yourself to fit into something. She wanted to wear the dress, so she did it. Jesus f*cking christ. I'm really close to just quitting the internet forever, this is getting too ridiculous.
people drop weight like this for all sorts of things. it's not unhealthy to eat less and fast.
Healthy weight loss though is at most 2lb a week, this is nearly triple that amount.
Load More Replies...I’m more outraged that she’s wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress. It’s super disrespectful to Marilyn’s memory. She could have damaged it. Smh.
The problem isn't Kim, it's the people who worship her. Stupid people have stupid lives.
The people in here worshipping Marilyn aren't any better... that's the real unhealthy part. They are worshipping fame whores... two women that hate/hated themselves so much they would do anything to have the public love them.
Load More Replies...I don’t give a fat rat’s a*s about Kim Kardashian going on a crash diet. She can starve herself or stuff herself and I could care less. But the potential damage to Marilyn Monroe’s dress concerns me. I’m still in shock that she was able to desecrate, sorry, get it in the first place, and not just have a copy made—-not to mention the fact that she’s fooling herself by thinking that wearing that dress somehow makes her on par with Monroe. She’s f*****g deluded. The conservators who let her use the dress will have one helluva time getting the stink of Kardashian a*s off it, not to mention it’s now tainted by association with her. I mean, Marilyn must be spinning in her grave so hard she’s going to pop right out of it in a fury and stomp the s**t out of her—-a Herculean feat, but I think Marilyn’s ghost could do it.
She only wore the actual dress for 10 minutes for the Vogue shoot. The rest of the time she *was * wearing a copy. I'm more concerned about the real damage done to actual people by copying her weight loss than damage to some stupid bit of fabric.

It's a shame they had to burn the dress after she wore it. #FilthyKardashianWhores
When men do this for movies, and talk about it no one complains. We hear about it all the time, and they are praised for it. Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, Chris Pratt, the list goes on. Why are we celebrating the men who do this, but when a woman uses the same eating plan to do something she wants to do we suddenly cry foul?
It's Kim Kardashian's body and she can do what she wants, but it's Lili Reinhart's brain, and she can think what she wants.
