Autism is talked about quite often, but very rarely is it portrayed in media, and even more rarely do we see it explained properly. That's where this amazing comics creator known as AspiGurl comes in. She creates funny, quirky, and sweet comics about her life and the struggles she runs into as an autistic girl. We get to read the comics and better understand from the view of a person with the developmental disorder.
The comics are colorful and have unexpected endings. The illustrations will probably make you laugh and relate many times. It's interesting to see the perspective of someone who sees social events, situations, and everyday life from a different perspective.

Aspigurl told us more about when and why she started creating these comics: "I had the idea for the comic back in 2018. It was almost April and I was kind of dreading the usual ableist posts that we always see around that time for Autism Awareness Month. My husband wtframecomics, who illustrates the comic, and I decided to post a comic each day of that April and we just kept making them!"
She also told us what motivated her to keep creating these comics: "One of the biggest motivations for making the comic is to give other autistic people content to relate to and maybe even illustrations that might help explain and express their lived experiences (same for non-autistics: it can help them have another point of view on autism.)"
On her website, Aspigurl describes herself as "a comic putting forward the voice of autistic people through anecdotes or reflections from everyday life. As there are as many autisms as there are autistic people, it seemed important to us to put forward this diversity by also receiving comic suggestions from autistic readers."
What do you think of these comics? Have they taught you anything new about autism and how people living with this disorder see the world? Perhaps you have autism yourself and can share your side and view? Tell us in the comments down below and don't forget to follow the artist on her social media!
How odd. I also always turn down music or pause audio books while trying to concentrate on driving
Aaaaaaaaand this is why we never have done with Covid (in France, anyway...)
Most of my clothes are the same... When you find an outifit that you like, why would you only buy one and keep wearing ones you do not like on other days ?
im fine with that noise even tho i have autism but i dont like bright lights and SUPER LOUD noises but the microwaves fine.
For me (ADHD, not autism) I feel the need for sounds that are not too loud to be completed...but my mom stops the microwave early! I find sounds extremely distracting, to the point I need earplugs just to study. Cats paws on carpet? Very noticeable. Also, do people with autism frequently have photophobia? ADHD people do, and I do.
Load More Replies...there's actually a function on some microwaves where you can mute it
Yes! I think for most newer ones you hold the one button down, I don't know how long but I muted mine a long time ago lol
Load More Replies...Even if I don’t have autism I’m still don’t like the sound either
Now this has got to be the most relatable thing on this list. Its at a point to where I go out of my way to open any microwave near me that is about to start beeping the Millosecond that it reaches 0:00.
PRO TIP: Hold down 2 on your microwave for 5 seconds and it will shut up.
As far as I know I'm not autistic but I also hate the microwave beeping but the strange thing is that our new washing machine doesn't beep as load as our old one and that does annoy me. It is so quiet you can hardly hear it beep when stabding next to it at the end of the wash cycle.
I have misophonia, and most loud noises I cannot stand. But I also hate most quiet sounds, as well. I don't want to explain misophonia. (I'm not being rude, it's hard to explain. Please look it up!) Edit: Oh my gosh i forgot why i commented! I was going to say that the microwave doesn't particulairly bother me, but it does sometimes. Thanks for reading!
I HATE the noise my moms microwave makes. And every time it beeps exactly five times, even if you open the microwave door. As far as im aware, theres no way to mute it, so i avoid using the microwave as much as possible.
I hate the microwave at my moms house simply because you cant mute it, or stop the beeping early. It has to complete all five beeps every time and it is the absolue worse so i avoid using my moms microwave as much as possible.
As far as I know I don't have autism (though I'm definitely an introvert), but that microwave noise annoys me, so I routinely try to stop it on the one-second mark.
I ALWAYS put mine on mute. And since it resets when power goes down...
Most of the microvawes can be turn silent if they have a digital menu...
same! I absolutely hate the noise, I feel like the entire neighborhood can hear when my microwave goes off.
Even though I don’t have autism I hate that sound too so I set the timer one second longer than it should be and stop it at one second left. Problem solved!
I hate the noise so whenever I have the microwave on, I count with it so that I can open it at two seconds or even one second left.
I can't deal with repetitive noises like a ringing phone and the bell at work that chimes every time someone opens the door to the back room.
Yep same with me I hate my alarm because it’s the same thing over and over again

i have three. imagine what it is like. poop everywhere. poopsplosions.
They are noise cancelling headphones, they help reduce back ground noise. Aural sensitivity is a trait of autistics.
Load More Replies...I think they are noise canceling headphones to lessen the amount of stimuli entering the brain of the person. Autistic people often are more sensitive for one or more senses, like sounds for example. Wearing headphones to dampen the sounds of the surroundings can help with making everything less overwhelming. I have autism as well, and my hearing is also very sensitive. Ever since I got noice cancelling headphones, using public transit is less overwhelming, and they also help a lot with concentrating on studying. I don't really understand why you got downvoted btw, I think that you asked an honost question, and I hope my answer makes things a bit more clear :)
Load More Replies...These are so spot on. I cannot relate to each one, because all Autists are different, but some really spoke to me on such a deep level. Especially the low battery and needing to sleep. I always say, I am closed to the world for the next two hours or days.
love these! i'm autistic (although pretty low on the spectrum) and i related to a lot of these! :)
I relate to nearly every one of these. I've never been diagnosed with autism, tho.
How's that going for you? Cauuuseee.... you're probably autistic if you relate that much to so many of these.

I can relate to every comic...but I was never diagnosed with autism, just told im a crazy bitch.
These illustrations are really amazing, I was laughing out loud the entire time as I found these so relatable. Especially the floor is lava one. I feel so tired sometimes explaining to people why I refuse to touch certain surfaces. It’s just so hard to explain, it’s not like I am intentionally being difficult you know. I had so much help from autism support workers over the past year and they really helped me lead a normal life but I just wish people around me would be more understanding sometimes.
These were so cute. Helped me understand how autism affects people. I loved them.
This isn't being autistic... this is just being a normal person!!
Sure isn't. If you relate you might want to look into a diagnosis if you think that would help you.

I relate to every single comic. With me I can't stand crowds. if I have to go somewhere that has a lot of people I usually end up sitting by myself because if I get overwhelmed I've found that going somewhere that I'm alone helps calm me down
It's not 1:1 for every Aspie, but there's plenty to relate to all right. Sometimes I forget that the things I experience as "normal" really aren't, and comics like this remind me of that.
You sure about that? ADHD has a lot of overlaps also.

I'm confused... She's called aspigirl, but she's autistic? The comics all sounds like asperger's, and they're different things. They have different quirks and are caused by different genes. As an Aspie I hate being lumped in with autistics because people have all these completely incorrect assumptions when you do that. When they combined them in the dsm-v it caused a lot of problems for a lot of us who can no longer get the correct type of help :(
I'm not an expert, but I've heard that high-functioning autism and Asperger's are the same thing, but the term Asperger's is no longer used because it was made up by a Nazi who wanted to kill autistic people and used the term Asperger's to describe autistic people who he considered useful and therefore didn't deserve death. But some people still use aspie because it's a cute, short and generally inoffensive way to describe themselves.
