“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.” – Norman Cousins
My parents were married 39 years before my dad passed away. They had so many adventures together throughout their years together. My dad was getting older but was still in good health and they had just recently got back from a cruise in October when he passed away suddenly in December. My mom was very grief stricken. She said they still had so many adventures to have. I did not want my mom to stop having adventures and experiences, but she felt so guilty going to events, or traveling without him. I did not know what to do to help her. I have a friend that has a stuffed cat that she takes on her adventures and takes photos with and I thought that maybe something like that would be nice for my mom. My dad was a photographer, so I thought what a great way to honor his memory and help my mom by giving her a companion and a task to take lots of photos. So we took some of my dads ashes and sealed them up. Then my mom and I went to Build a Bear. I had her pick a bear and we named him Davy, after my dad David. He has his own Facebook page so she can take photos and load them and share their adventures with the world and all the people her and Davy meet. He has been to many family milestone events like graduations and birthdays and now he is like one of our family members. I know it hasn’t replaced my dad in any way, but it has given her a way to help her cope with her loss and I think Davy has helped us all to remember our dad. These are just a few of the adventures mom and Davy have had over the last 2 years.
