Parents Are Mad After A Lesbian Couple Gets Voted Prom King And Queen By Their Classmates
Annie Wise and Riley Loudermilk, a pair of high schoolers in Kings Mill, Ohio, have been dating for six months now. On April 17, they were voted the prom king and queen, which they believe is the first time an LGBTQ couple has received the crowns in this district.
The excitement was through the roof when Wise recounted the moment how “My crown fell off and it broke. There was a lot going on, but it’s something I’ll never forget. It was amazing.” And while many see the prom couple as a recognition of their popularity, for Annie and Riley, the honor was much more than that. “I do hope it kind of just helps people realize that it’s OK to come out,” the prom queen told the press.
Meanwhile, some parents were enraged with the lesbian couple winning the title. It’s honestly more than weird to see a bunch of adults bashing teenagers for something that brought the school community nothing but happiness.

Kings Local School District shared a photograph of Annie and Riley on their Facebook page and it went viral, amassing 4.8k likes and receiving 2.4k comments. Unfortunately, not all comments on the school district’s post were positive.

According to NBC News, the school district had to keep up with the coming posts and delete the negative ones. Riley said that many of those nasty comments said that the couple “needs Jesus,” others expressed that a prom king should be male.

The rage escalated to a school board meeting last week where one parent stressed her anger about the elected couple being LGBTQ. “Sorry, but I believe that there are still two genders, a male and a female,” WLWT5 news reports. According to Fox19, another parent at the meeting added: “I think tradition stands for a queen that has a vagina, a king that has a penis and testicles.”

The homophobic comments from adults both online and at the school board meeting didn’t affect the decision as the school board defended Annie and Riley. Dawn Goulding, a community relations coordinator for the school district, commented on the matter: “This is solely a Kings High School senior class nominated and voted-on initiative.”

But the week after prom, an anonymous parent had a school meeting where she complained about the decision of electing the LGBTQ couple

Negative comments from haters started flooding in
Fortunately, many people showed support for the LGBTQ king and queen

I just can't understand these people. What harm does it do to ANYONE to crown a lesbian couple? They are happy and no one gets hurt. Win-win. I mean, it's not like you're worse at making coffee because gay people exist? Or you suddenly suck at math because you saw two women kiss? Or you're not allowed to be straight and live your life the way you want, just because others live their lives differently?
Somehow, a lot of people seem to think exactly that. It's like z zero-sum equation to them, where giving rights to a group of people will take those rights away from others.

@Hui_Huit There are many many MANY HISTORICAL EXAMPLES of women being crowned king. IT'S A TITLE, A POSITION, nothing more, nothing less. You're essentially whining that the word 'Ruler' can only refer to a piece of wood with black lines and numbers on it. Better yet, you're like that idiot woman that insisted she "wasn't a cisgender female, she was all home grown woman!!!" It's semantics and bigotry dressed up in definitions and details.

hu... "KING : the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth. "King Henry VIII"" source : just google it Name to me a female called KING something... second question: Is it an absolute objective for women to have a male labels? why? do they think that KING is better? you're stepping on your own foot with your semantic absurdity...
People are morons. That's all there is to understand. I couldn't imagine caring about gay kids winning prom. There always has been and always will be gay people in the world. Idk why anyone cares who another person is attracted to.
Right? The mentality that causes this is obvious in this line from the complaints: "That is the sickest thing I have heard". I mean all the mass shootings, murders, rape and wars take place in the same universe but seeing two girls hug is the sickest thing.. I bet that is a product of brainwashing.

That doesn't arm anyone. That doesn't help anyone neither. (I'm not sure if this lady feels soooooo happy to have a male label. Best case scenario: she doesn't care....) It's just sad to see everyone praising that a women can be called "king" by fear to be judged by the politically-correctness that rules all relationship in US. Your fear of social judgment makes you lose all your common sense. Even basic semantic rules needs to be destroyed because someone may feel hurt... I've so admired America when I was young. seeing this decline by lack of maturity is sad

So you think it's normal to have a woman "king"... You "woke" americans are so ill. This "politically corectness" will destroy you as a nation.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but Poland had a female king in the 14th century. Those medieval knights were very woke indeed.

haha. It's you who don't seem to understand. People don't care if these ladies are lesbian or not. THEY-DON'T-GIVE-a-S**** but the fact that you MUST subscribe to the fact that a women gets crowned a "KING" (otherwise you're promptly called homophobic by lazy superheroes like you) is the problem. what's wrong with keeping the KING a male? as it's what the word means ( king=man, queen=female)
What confuses me is that it's just such a tiny, unimportant issue to get upset over. We aren't living in a monarchy anymore, it doesn't really matter if we scramble the meaning of king or queen every once in a while. Why does it make you so angry?

That's a symbol. A symbol of absurd political correctness that generates useless conflicts and long term US decline Jack shows you a horse and says : it's a cow you: no, it's a horse, look better Jack: "you homophobic sexist racist piece of s$$$t! if it wants to be a cow, let it be a cow! You're not allowed to speak for her" you: I'm just sticking to basic observation and definition, I don't love or hate cows more than horses Jack: this is what an anti-horse person would have said you:... okay... Who's wrong? Jack or you? There are so many Jacks in US, for everything (colors of skin, sexuality, social level, religion, etc). Like I said in another response: I once admired America: so many different peoples united because following the same dream of freedom and modernity. Now: so many small clusters of minorities fighting hard to find any reason to appear the victim and point fingers at others.
Also I'm pretty sure cows and horses don't know they are cows or horses, but humans know what they are and want to be. It doesn't hurt anybody for a girl to be crowned prom king as long as she had no objections to it.
I did. Ridiculous anecdotical example from a completely different context. Some wrestler from the 50's called himself "the snake".... I hope you don't believe that he actually was a reptile... do you? You're incapable to call a spade a spade because you're desperately looking for social acceptance...
@Hui: Whom does it hurt if a King is female? You must also object to a boy asking to wear a princess costume because, well, a princess in a glitter dress must be female. A sociologist would tell you that the idea of a leader pair being Queen and King is but a social construct. Sticking to it is conservatism without any value but for the sake of preserving what seems traditional.

what's wrong with social construct or tradition? Do you even realize that you're building a new one? what's good in destroying basic rules (such as orthograph, dude) and blaming the ones that are accepting or living by them? How does that make you more fair or smart to accept that your boy wants to be called a Girafe because, he, "boy" is a social construct... I'm not homophobic. Again, I don't care about anyone's sexuality. You can't imagine how much I don't care. (I live in the Marais in Paris and half of my neighbors and friends are gay) But being forced into the label "homophobic" because I find it ridiculous to change the meaning of words for consensus-sake, that, is ridiculous. ... and so American
I'm just gonna start laughing at everyone that says females can't be kings, after all I'm a female and my last name is king sooo, doesn't that make me a Female King? I know it's not the same but in all seriousness it really doesn't matter if a girl is a king
Whoever in the year 2021 still gets "shocked" by the fact that non-heterosexual people exist, is an idiot. Whoever argues with "god" against non-heterosexual people should first and foremost consider their lack of fear in said god whom they ignore, as they decide which of the religion's values (traditional famility model vs. grace of charity) they weight how much instead. Whoever argues against love is to be condemned.
The bible and Quran say that you're supposed to stone homosexuals to death. If they aren't willing to follow through on killing homosexuals, they should just shut up. The bible also says to kill divorced people. If they aren't decrying divorce as loudly as they decry homosexuality, they are hypocrites. Faith is irrelevant, stupid, and religions are testably untrue. People should dump these harmful, evil myths entirely. And you have to stop making excuses for these evil religions.
Load More Replies...Technically, there were no proscriptions AT ALL in the Bible against homosexuality originally. The original stoning verses stated that 'defilers of the faith and heretics' were to be stoned, and the other 2 scriptures were inserted by Pope Constantine I as a way to combat declining population numbers. At the time, most men believed that women were not capable of true, abiding, deep passion and love, so women were only for having kids and if you wanted a 'real' relationship you could only find out with another man. But I agree with your sentiment.
A story from the same book with the talking donkey in it? A story from the book that says the earth is flat? A story from the book that says the earth is the center of our universe and planetary system? Does the sun go around the earth? A story from the book where jesus says you can actually move mountains with prayer alone? Go move a mountain with prayer. A story from a book where jesus is talking to a group of people where he told them, surely he will return before some of them have died? He never returned in their lifetime [Matthew 16:28].
If I were king of the world I would ban all religion. It causes more problems than it solves.
Hinduism and buddhism cause less problems, but they still cause some problems. Almost all religions are misogynistic where women are viewed as less than men (this includes buddhism and hinduism). Hinduism says that the world rests on the back of giant turtle. That's just silly. To teach someone that as truth is harmful. You should look at the dhalia lama in Tibet. The buddhists had a very detrimental class/caste system, some people were treated as slaves. The dhalia lama used to rule with an iron fist and he even had people killed. Hinduism has that very harmful classist, racist caste system still happening. Hindus with darker skin are treated awfully (forced to clean toilets/outhouses, etc.). Go work with large groups of Indian people, you will see that hindus treat some other hindus very badly. Why do you need any religion and unverifiable claims? Just study science.
If you are looking for the least harmful religion, maybe look into Jainism. Jainists are strict vegans and they are against harming any living beings including the tiniest bugs.
The caste system was abolished a long time ago. It was not in the original version of the vedas or puranas, it was added later on by people trying to exploit others. Besides, I'm pretty sure that many smart people, no matter the religion are trying to weed out the impractical and harmful practices and beliefs of their religion and sticking to the good part. We have advanced and must adjust our beliefs as such. What was good then might not be good now. It is written in the vedas that we must not believe blindly, but test the theories presented and find out for ouselves.

Tell me, Terd. I asked you this before, but you never replied. Who creates science? What happens after death?
Noemie, I am not sure that people created all of science; a lot of aspects are more of a discovery. Did people create fire? No. Fire existed and people were able to harness and discover it. The Arabic numerals, did people create them? It is more of a discovery. We’ve always had 10 fingers, but it took someone to discover the principles of numbers and arithmetic. These things exist in the natural world. Nothing happens after death. That’s the natural order. Our particles get broken down and some feed the soil, plants, and worms. What happens to a chimpanzee after death in your view? Do they go to a chimp heaven? We had common ancestors with chimps, so at what point evolutionarily do chimps go to heaven?
So typical. Just because someone has a certain religion (or lifestyle) doesn't mean they're a professor in the matter and have to precisely everything. That's like saying you're not allowed to enjoy a donald duck comic, because you're not a comic nerd that knows every detail about marvel and dc and the most obscure characters that have ever existed in any comic Stop perstering people
The abrahimic religious texts are provably wrong. They are filled with thousands of contradictions, failed scientific claims, historical inaccuracies, sometimes forgeries, and errors. When these books say the earth is flat, that's wrong. When these books say they are inerrant, and we can see contradictions in them, they prove themselves wrong. When these books say the earth is center of our planetary system, we know they are wrong. When these books promote an evil morality, we know they are wrong. When these books condone slavery, and rape, and stoning gay people to death, we know they are wrong and evil.
Paul, that is a fascist approach. I agree that religion usually causes more harm than good in these current times (it had more uses in ancient times). But, the answers is never fascism. Should we lock the religious in concentration camps like the Jews? No. People should have the freedom to choose what to believe. They should also be educated too. Education will likely be the only thing to hinder religion. Same thing with flat earthers.
And not to shave your beard. And not to eat shellfish. And not to lust over another's spouse. Further, if one commits a single sin on that list, one supposedly commits them all. I am not religious at all, but I do love to read. It's (I imagine) a lesson not to judge other people, because we are essentially all sinners. And boy, has that gotten lost in translation when the average person these days thinks of "the Bible"... Most "christians" don't even know that their "bible" consists of the Jewish talmud and torrah as the Old Testament, as well as the Christian New Testament as codified by the Roman Empire between the years 393-397 AD, 400 years after the supposed death of Christ and 60 years after the death of Constantine the Great. The latter of which consolidated Christianity with Mithraism (ever wondered where angels with halos and "the blood of christ" came from? google it). This original Catholic Church later split into the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, and finally the various protestant denominations (from Anglicans to frickin' Mormons). And before that reformation came the Qu'ran, within which the most quoted prophet is not even Muhammad, but Jesus. They all worship the same thing, and most "believers" don't even know it- let alone the fact that casting "furiously righteous judgement" or whatever on "people not like you" was never the point of these damn cults-cum-religions in the first place. Angry, ignorant people gonna ignorant, angrily. Regardless of what flag or relic they wave. And you can probably count on the fact that they don't even understand their own symbols that they wave so vigorously. No fundamentalist really needs or wants to. Because they have "faith" or whatever you want to call the urge that some people feel, to hurt and oppress other people based on differences from themselves. Personally, I just say no to that nonsense, and stick to reading.
Hi Curry, Matthew 5:32 states that divorce is adultery. And Leviticus 20:10 says to stone adulterers to death.
The word homosexuality was added in the 40s. Original bible was written in Koine Greek. The word that was incorrectly translated is the Greek word for male prostitute. There is plenty of evidence that homosexuality was not seen as a sin during the time of Jesus.
Ivana, where did you hear this? What is your source of information? I’m sorry to say you are just incorrect. Talk to some high level university biblical scholars. You can’t just trust something you read on the internet that makes you feel better about these evil holy books.
The bible says nothing about homosexuality. There were some texts about not lying with a child that were taken out of context in translation. It's paedophiles that should be stoned, not queer people
Zaza, that is incorrect. Where did you get that information? You should talk to the best university level biblical scholars on the subject. What you are bringing is unverified trash from the internet. It may make you feel a bit better about your evil holy book, but it's wrong. The bible also says to stone adulterers to death. Should we really kill every adulterer? That would be a gigantic portion of humanity including many peoples' parents. The bible says to stone people to death that do any work on the sabbath day (even just moving sticks). Should we kill firemen that work on the sabbath? This book is straight up evil. These books also condone slavery.
Actually, that's not rely what the Bible says. And considering the bad translation,
I wouldn't say "whoever" there are people who are heavily influenced by extreme rightists and homophobic religious people at a sadly young age and that influence carries over to their adult life
Good point. Also just combat homophobes with why until they accept defeat. "Do you know why god said that????"
This is so stupid. My old high school just had "Prom Royalty" instead, and nobody gives a s**t what gender they end up being, which really is how it should be everywhere. Good for these girls!!
here we just had a ball with dancing and drinking and nobody got elected better than the rest.
Load More Replies...I was wondering what might happen now that Prom King and Queen popularity contests are increasingly obsolete. "Prom Royalty" is one option. No "royalty" at all and everyone dancing is even better.
