What happens after we say cheese? The subjects of the following photographs probably didn’t predict the answer to be a morbid plot twist. We have all seen post-tragedy photos of terrible accidents. Yet, there is something particularly ominous and haunting about photos taken before disaster.

Think smiling families, groups embarking on explorations, and daring stunt attempts, not in the least expecting to be caught in a natural disaster or a horrific plane crash. Some of these pictures appear so unassuming and cheerful that it makes what followed all the more horror story-like.

William Shakespeare famously said, “Men at some times are masters of their fate,” but as you will see in the following photos taken before disaster, this is not always the case. Scroll down below with caution to see the Bored Panda round-up of some of the most creepy images that precede unfortunate events.

Mount St. Helen Eruption

Mount St. Helen Eruption

On May 18, 1980, Robert Landsberg, a freelance photographer, was just four miles away from Mount St. Helen. He had spent some time in the vicinity, exploring the beautiful vistas prior to the fatal event. This photo, showing the wall of ash that formed after the eruption, was the last one he took. Landsberg managed to hide the film with the photos before disaster struck on it under his body, leaving this as a piece of documentation of the events.

On February 20, 1970, a 14-year-old Australian teen named Keith Sapsford snuck into the Sydney Airport and hid in the wheel well of a plane en route to Japan. However, soon after the plane took off, a tragedy struck, and Keith’s 200ft plunge to death was accidentally documented by John Gilpin, an amateur photographer, who happened to be testing his new camera lens at that time and took this haunting photo before a disaster.

The fault is of the parents, not keeping an eye on their child. Harambe may have been dangerous, but so is letting your child wander around at that age. They should have been supervising.

TO THOSE SAYING stop blaming the parents - and who have more than a fifth grade reading comprehension, they would know that eyewitnesses were interviewed and quoted as saying that little boy had been bugging his mother for a while about going in to see the gorilla, that he wanted to get in there with him. Repeatedly. And then they said her attention was diverted for "maybe a minute'....more than long enough for horrible things to happen to a kid that doesn't listen to their parents and the parents don't listen to the kid. So, YES, IT'S THE PARENTS' FRIGGING FAULT.

I absolutely agree. When you're taking care of your child you're not worried he might go to the gorilla cage (which in this case happened) but you're in a crowded place where he might get lost or someone can easily take him from you. It is a shame that they had to kill an endangered species due to parents not paying attention to their child.

A tranquilizer dart takes time to have an effect. What you see on TV and in movies is b******t. I believe I read that they reasoned a dart would possibly have enraged the gorilla into doing more harm before the drug would have an effect.

Before people start mentioning which life is more important, think about all the animals you eat assuming you aren't vegan. I'm all for saving animals but unfortunately I wouldn't hesitate to pick which life is more important and that would be the baby or any other human. You are being a hypocrite for enjoying things like chicken and then saying the gorilla's life is important. That's just a bunch of lies you delude yourself into thinking to feel better. You love animals yet you eat chicken(insert meat of choice), what a joke. All life is equal according to some so picking other animals over others is hypocrisy at its best. As long as you continue eating animals that are reared to be slaughtered just so you can have a meal don't going arund blaming the parents for a situation like this. Its unfortunately but its clear whose life is more valuable to us, natural omnivores. Our kind is themost valuable that's the truth to change that will be difficult. Period.

That Gorilla would not have harmed that child. They have actually showed incredible signs of sympathy and have actually helped children in similar circumstances. They should have saved the bullets for the parents of this boy. Kill a healthy male Silverback Gorilla, one of the most endangered species on the planet for one person? ...Whoever killed that animal was an idiot. Look at the hand holding the boys shoulder. There is no signs of aggression on the Gorillas face at all. If it wanted to harm the boy, he'd already be dead.

I raised my 2 kids and we have been a huge part of our granddaughters life, it only takes a split second for a kid to vanish or get into a situation where they are going to be hurt. A kid that size shouldn't have been out of the parents arms in a zoo. That said how could the kid get into the enclosure in the first place? Why didn't a bystander grab the kid? To have children is a blessing. When they are young they will explore. If you take your eyes off them, something might happen. You are the chain reaction to something else. Be ready to make a sacrifice and not let your mind wonder even for a second it might cost someone or something to falter.

Zoos exist because they are made by people, purely for people. NOT for the animal. No zoos, no situations like this. Although, if the same situation happened in the wild perchance, the result would've been the same but with less blame being thrown around.

That gorilla again? Seriously? I think it says something about our society when people are more interested in the life of a gorilla instead the life of a child. Imagine for a second that the zoo hadn't killed the gorilla and it in turn had killed the child. This child could never have realised its potential then. And people are sitting here crying over a gorilla? Did the parents make a mistake- yes they did it. Did the zoo do the right thing- absolutely. The life of animal that will only eat, hunt and procreate is less worth than the life of a human being that has the potential to be a doctor, scientist, artist, musician, astronaut, lawyer and a myriad of other things.

it's incredible how he was actually killed. An assassin had tried to throw a bomb under their passing car, but it missed and exploded the car behind, the assassin then took his cyanide pill, but it was faulty and just caused him to throw up (a lot) so he panicked and threw himself in the river, but it had been a long hot summer, so the river was shallow... Ferdinand then was rushed away but later wanted to go and see the survivors or the earlier bomb, it was when he was on his way there that he was shot.

    Christopher McCandless’s Last Self-Portrait

Picture of Christopher McCandless'es last self portrait

Christopher McCandless (the man from “Into The Wild” story) was an American adventurer. His last adventure took place in the Alaskan bush, where he stayed in an abandoned bus for over 100 days. His decomposing body was found in 1992 by moose hunters, with starvation later determined as the cause of his death (although that’s still debated). This is one of the last pictures before disaster.

And now people who are "inspired" by the book have to be rescued from their own lack of preparation. They obviously didn't think about what happened IRL

    James Dean Before His Crash

James Dean getting gas for his Porsche 550 Spyder

James Dean, a Hollywood actor, is pictured here filling up the tank of his Porsche 550 Spyder not long before he crashed it and died on September 30, 1955. Although the car was totaled, the salvageable parts were sold, only to cause several accidents later on. This spurred the myth that the car was actually cursed.

    The Concorde Crash

    Picture of Concorde Crash

On July 25, 2000, Air France flight 4590, a Concorde passenger jet bound for New York from Paris, crashed shortly after its takeoff. The plane’s engines caught on fire, and the crash took the lives of 113 people in total. Although it was the only fatal accident in 27 years of Concordes being operated, they were all grounded after the crash, soon to be retired and never to fly again altogether.

It killed Concorde, too. Not just that one - all the planes were mothballed soon after. Now if you want to fly supersonic you need to be Military :(

    Diana, Princess Of Wales

Diana Princess Of Wales before the fatal crash

One of the last photos of Diana, Princess of Wales, was taken by paparazzi chasing her car on the fatal night of the crash that took her and Dodi Al Fayed’s lives. She’s seen in the back of the car with her head turned. In front on the left is her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, and on the right, the driver Henri Paul (who was later found to be driving drunk). This is one of the photos taken before the disaster on the night of August 31, 1997, just before the fatal crash.

Who took the photo contributed to the crash and their death (not sure her bodyguard survived)

Ricardo miller posthumously awarded Paul Walker his bjj black belt. Already a brown belt at the time of his passing, his coach thought nothing would, stop him from receiving his, black belt. This was a real honorable gesture by his, coaches part and a real cool thing to do

    Joseph Avery’s Niagara River Crash

Picture of Joseph Avery crashing his boat in the Niagara river

The reason why this photo is so blurry is because it was taken on July 18, 1853. In the image, you can see Joseph Avery, the sole survivor of a boat crash that killed two other passengers, clinging to a rock to be saved. He stayed this way for 18 hours, and when the rescue boat came, it capsized just as he boarded it, ultimately ending Avery’s life. It’s probably one of the oldest photos taken before disaster.
