We all were there when Elon Musk was asking ‘The Flat Earth Society” the important questions, poking at the reasoning behind the conspiracy theory that Earth is, in fact, a flat disc. While flat-earthers seem to lack substantial arguments in the debate and it seems quite obvious what the answer to the age-old question is, Imgur user GregPagel’s views were challenged after he snapped a photo of Lake Michigan.
After examining the photos, Greg, a 47-year-old musician from Manitowoc, realized that the horizon he captured seemed quite flat, instantly raising doubts about everything he knew about the Earth globe. “I’ve often looked at the horizon over that lake–thousands of times–and wondered, “am I seeing a curve? I’m not sure. Maybe a little? Or is my mind playing tricks?” As a kid, I’d look at it a lot,” Greg told Bored Panda. So, he did what any other person would do, and he used science to find out if this popular conspiracy theory had any truth in it. “When I actually did the math and made the diagram, I actually felt a rush,” Pagel recalled. Using Google Earth and some calculations, he was able to figure it all out and share the surprising flat earth theory results with the world. Scroll down to see what he found out yourself!
Yesterday, imgur user Greg took some pictures in Manitowoc, Wisconsin
He snapped some beautiful panorama shots of Lake Michigan
However, he quickly noticed that something odd about the photographs
The horizon seemed pretty… flat
So Greg did what any other person would do and used science to figure it all out
From using Google Earth to graphs, the man dove head-first into the challenge
“The fun part was showing a .12 degree arc on a circle. It’s almost nothing!” – Greg told Bored Panda
And here’s your answer! 0.12 curve is barely noticeable, but it’s still a curve!

I like the article and all that, but I have to say it bugs me when people use the "it looks flat in my photo" argument because lenses are curved and you can make anything look straight or curved by lilting the lens up or down, so it doesn't help either side of the debate because it's invalid to begin with. The pano part is also not valid because you have flat water, yet the road the photo was taken on now looks like a V, so it's obviously perspective distortion. I'm all for the flat earth debate (it's f*****g hilarious) so long as the people's "proofs" are a bit more well thought out than using photos which, again, are invalid for both sides of the debate.
Greg here. Good observations. Couple points--not and expert, I could be wrong. I think most lenses do not cause noticeable distortion. Fish-eye and other kinds, but I don't think my iPhone lens would. In fact, I did have the camera at different angles, but I (rather painstakingly) edited and cropped them so the horizon line matched. Pic 1 was actually angled lower than pic 2, but the line look the same. If there's distortion, wouldn't you say it's pretty negligible? And the Pano shot distorts things all over the place, but if you hold it steady, the horizon line looks *pretty much* like real life. Anyway, the point of the piece was that "The horizon looks pretty flat from here, no matter how you look at it." And then I tried to demonstrate why this would be true on a great big globe. Whether you think the earth is flat or round, it's going to look the same when you're a-sittin' on it! At least, I think so. I've never been to a flat planet, so it might look different. :)

I love seeing articles from my fellow Wisconsinites. I have too stood on the shore of Lake Michigan thinking "am I seeing things or is there a curve?" I also feel like the best argument for the earth NOT being flat is that when you look across the lake you can't see Michigan - even with really really good binoculars - it's just lake. Surely if the earth was flat, at some point with some magnification you should theoretically see Michigan, especially if you are standing on the edge of Washington Island in Door County - since it's the furthest east point in the state, right?
Youtuber GreaterSapiens asked flat-earthers some questions and the answers show how ignorant flat-earthers are. It's a long video, but worth watching. Caution: high chance of facepalming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HULVzdGmnDo&index=27&list=PL6NZVizM65rtkI2sKcLsxZjhstYYaeJgp
How can you make such a profound statement from such a small area. This is the most stupid theory I have every heard. Are we going back into the dark ages? I place my beliefs in FACTS, where are your facts? A small picture does make a believable theory. You people make me fear for the future of our planet. Go up in a plane and shoot pictures of the flat earth. Show some real facts, oops, there are none. Grow up and get a life, I am sure there are more important things you would be good at with your math skills. Conspiracy theories make me sick.
Show the same .12 curve over 8.4 miles in your drawing. I'd imagine it has more curve than any real world image
FE'rs and globalist are all doing it wrong. Standing omn a mountain taking a pic of anotyher mountain does NOT mean the earth is flat. But THIS does prove it is not. https://www.metabunk.org/attachments/lake-pontchartrain-power-lines-demonstrating-the-curvature-metabunk-jpg.27877/
If people think rationally by reading, observing & learning about Flat Earth science & Earth sphere science they will come to the only intelligent conclusions. Its shocking at first, as your world view changes on so many subjects, allowing you to make more sense of reality in a sometimes confusing world.
I'm baffled. According to what people are saying about ships going over the horizon, they are gone about six miles at max. So, if your picture is of 8.4 miles from side to side, then you should not be able to see the other land, and from the side view, there should be a curve, right?
lol anyone who responds contradictorily has his comment deleted. what a loser. keep livin the lie freak
Try it with a real distance since that's the real point here. The argument has been made a hundred-thousand times before. Same old played-out, simpleton argument done with basic math. https://galeri.uludagsozluk.com/r/d%C3%BCnya-d%C3%BCzd%C3%BCr-diyen-adam-1329938/
and the fact that people still think that a response, as played out as this one has been for decades is considered brilliant is amazing and I think is indicative of those same people being the "flat-heads" after all.

Like Michael Jackson kept saying in South Park: "Ignorant... you're being ignorant!"
Very impressive. I guess we need to fly into space to notice the curve.
You took a picture of the horizon, assumed the earth is round by stating its circumference before proving that its round, and then used that to explain the flat appearance of the horizon is directly related to the earth being really large. Flat-earth believers aren't going to buy it anyway, and the post is pretty long to just prove what you have proved. What is the real intention behind it though?
1998: I guess internet & universal knowledge will make a huge improvement on humanity, probably in 20 years we will be discussing on issues humanity had never thought... 2018: Earth is not flat, here, I explain it in this post with the picture I took...
The curvature of the earth works out at about 8” per mile (it’s just under that but list round it up for now) If the distance is 1.8 Miles then the curve at the horizon is shown at 14” in total. Good luck seeing that.
Flat earth science was obviously brought in to make all other conspiracy theories sound questionable. The power loving war mongers love to muddy the waters.
Um. If the earth was flat you'd see the coast on the other side of the lake. Lake Michigan is only about 50 km wide there. The horizon is at about 4,500 m.
The curvature or lack of on photos doesn't proof anything. Either can be blamed on lens distortion depending on the point you want to make. The fact that you can't see the other side of the lake, however, is proof the earth is round. If the earth would be flat you'd see the other side of the lake (I guess that would be Ludington), but the curvature of the earth hides the other side behind the horizon.
The fact that you can't see the other side of the lake, however, is proof that the earth is round. If it would be flat you'd be able to see the other side (that would be Ludington I guess)
If you zoom in on a football it will be flat. If you zoom in more it will seem even more flat, but i heard football is round , have I been lied to?
Nice try to explain a flat horizon, but technically wrong. The reason why the horizon on our globe is flat is because the horizon is not a straight line over the earth's surface, but a circular line. When on the ocean, the distance to the horizon is in every direction the same, so the horizon is a flat circle 360 degrees around the observer. The observer is watching that flat circle from it's centre. And when you watch a circle from its centre, that circle is a flat line curved all around you. That's the real reason why on our globe the horizon is always flat in the eyes of the observer, until you are that high above that circle that you can see the circular shape of the horizon, like on pictures taken from space.
No-one EVER thought the Earth was flat! Do you know why? Because we can look up and see the moon without any assistance whatsoever, and it is clearly a f*****g SPHERE!
Wouldn't it be easier to simply point to Michigan? Fun fact: Medieval people never thought the world was flat.
This photo shows Big Sable Point lighthouse in Ludington, MI, about 50 miles away from Manitowoc. If the earth was flat, you would be able to see the whole structure with a good telescope on a clear day. You can't, because the earth is not flat. Photo by Craig Sterken. Big-Sable-...ac9f12.jpg
The problem here is, we can also take pictures of over 90 miles, where the first mile of drop occurs. The funny thing about REAL spheres, is they curve in all directions. So a 90 mile horizon should have at least a half-mile high bulge of water clearly visible left to right. Yet strangely enough, it's perfectly flat and level. Forget degrees, you're not even showing a circle of 25,000 miles circumference. When you show that 1 degree honestly, it is just under 70 miles across, and the curvature WOULD be visible. If it existed.
Flat-earthers just brings this up to make a meaning into their empty lives. Why do they even bother to question like this? It's like questioning our Sun's heat. Cool info, tho.
An article on various beliefs about the shape of the Earth can be found at: http://www.religioustolerance.org/cosmology-and-the-flat-earth-conspiracy-4.htm This essay is linked to others that show a couple of dozen other proofs that the Earth is not flat.
For a bit of balance - over that Chord length - 8.2 miles = 13444 metres- you get a height of curve of 4mm. Teeny bit over 1/8 of an inch. Invisible.
They question what you use to come to your conclusions. To them it's ALL a conspiracy! What is scary is how fast this flat earth theory" is spanning the globe.
Now, go too somewhere wider and also watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RIBO7VB0VE on youtube
The horizon looks flat because Earth isn't a cylinder. It's a sphere, so if you can see straight to the horizon in all directions, they're all equidistant and all equally high.
Those idiot "deniers" wouldn't even understand what he was trying to say. Some folks are just stupid in their heads and scream "fake news" when they don't agree with something. IDIOTS!
Flat earthers don't believe in maths, or science, they don't have or want proof, they just want to believe what they want to believe, who knows why, but you can't argue with that much obstinacy. Just leave 'em to it and hopefully they'll just stay in the US (mostly) because obviously they can't fly anywhere without falling off the plate.
Centuries later: Look, the Earth is, in fact, round! Not good.

How to flat earth people explain night and day? If the earth was flat wouldn't the entire earth be night at the same time until the sun came back around? I wonder whats on the other side of our flat earth too, maybe some more intelligent humans? Who needed science eh?
Back when my wife and I used to fly to Hawaii from Seattle the curvature was pretty obvious just by looking out the window at 40,000 feet.
Someone explain to me that using a SATELLITE MAP to prove your on the ground picture is still valid makes a lick of sense. Having a satellite map doesn't do so?
I'm not a flat-earth believer but that doesn't prove anything at all, plus the hypothesis was 'wrong' from the start: he already assumed that the earth was round...
Nice idea, but the geometry is wrong. Think of it as a very wide cone placed on a sphere so that they touch. Your eyes are at the apex of the cone, and the sphere is the earth. If the earth were a perfect sphere, the point at which the cone touches the sphere would be a circle. This is your visible horizon. The circle is *flat* relative to your "up" direction, ie. would be perpendicular to the direction of gravity through the earth. So basically you're looking out at an enormous circle. You're so close to the plane of the circle, relative to its radius, that it looks flat -- like holding a hula hoop around your head at close to eye level and then looking out at it.
He didn't prove it isn't flat. He proved its either flat or curved. Both answers explain his photo.
Love this! I shared it with all of my math classes today and will be sharing this next year when we study proportions! :)
I love this! I showed this to all of my math classes today and will be using this to teach proportions next year!
This is how the diameter of Earth has been calculated accurately in ancient Greek, thousands of years ago
Except they used a couple of sticks and some well known distances, they also had a pretty good bead on time as far as when the sun would be directly overhead. Obviously they didn't use such a small arc angle, and no photographs.

So do flat earthers also not believe the space shuttle went into space & took pictures & brought them back showing the earth is round? ok wiseguy ! explain the flight paths that do not fly from point A to point B taking a wasted long way around not crossing the Indian Ocean and using Google tracking ...
There is theoretical curvature, but thee is no measurable curvature. Earth is flat.
Ehm no. He did not prove that the earth is round. He proved that a flat earth and a round earth would both show a flat horizon. He only disproved one flat-earther argument, not the flat earth theory itself. Had he gone to the beach, he would have noticed that he could see less of the rocks at the two points than on his elevated house. This would have been a proof of a round earth.
OP here. Thank you! I was bothered by the headline. One point: These pictures were taken not from my house, but from the very edge of a cliff maybe 10-15 feet above the beach. Walking down to the beach wouldn't have changed the arc angle enough to notice, and it wouldn't have hidden any of the rocks (you'll have to take my word for it--I've walked that beach plenty!). It certainly wouldn't have changed the calculations!

Cute story - but useless in reality (I know the earth is a sphere - just saying that this exercise is nonsensical). The appearance of a curve does not depend on the arc of your view, which is the core of this misguided "revelation" - but on the elevation (altitude, height) of your viewpoint. Consider standing on a lighthouse surrounded by ocean as far as the eye can see. Water extends to the horizon. What an interesting word! That's where we get "horizontal" from. There is no curve visible. The horizon isn't a series of indiscernible scallops - it's a smooth, FLAT, LINE for the full 360 degrees around you. So you need to get very high up. The curve becomes measurable (not to the eye though) on photographs taken at least 20,000 ft (6,000 meters) above the earth. The human eye will only begin to perceive the curve when the observer is at somewhere above 40,000 ft (12,190 m). So modern airliners won't get you high enough but the Concorde did, as do some military "spy planes". Sorry.

The round earth model predicts that the curvature of the earth would be imperceptible from this vantage point. Unless you can see an arc of 0.12 degrees, you must concur. Or show more accurate calculations, because these photos are consistent with the generally accepted round earth model.

You Americans REALLY need to revise your academic programs for elementary and high school education. After Trump and Betsy DeVos are gone, of course.
Wtf? Are you telling me that there are actually people who think the earth is flat? Have they not seen the pictures of the earth from space? Whatever man, I was going to Google it and read what they have to say and then I realized I've already wasted enough of my time on it posting this comment lol. I think we need to be worried about how the hell we are going to save our planet and not the damn shape.
Or you can prove it by not seeing the other shore from there :D Kpkivgs-5b...fb-png.jpg
these sheeple, obviously the government pushed the water in the center up a bit to get IDIOTS to believe the earth was round. OpEn YoUr EyEs
People who think the earth is flat in the first place are absolute crayons anyways
The nature of perspective means the visible horizon is far longer than 8miles
Load More Replies...Same old argument and shown with such a bad example. Try 50... or a couple hundred miles. Plenty of examples us dummy flat earthers provide but you use something as stupid as an 8 mile, simple shot like this where you can't tell there's a curve but we're supposed to imagine it and that's the genius point you're making. Been said a billion times before... https://galeri.uludagsozluk.com/r/d%C3%BCnya-d%C3%BCzd%C3%BCr-diyen-adam-1329938/
Not good.
Load More Replies...That explanation made my brain hurt. I would think that photos from space would convince any flat-earther that the planet is round.
Load More Replies...Because the're is a growing group of very vocal science denying conspiracy loving dumbasses that have revived the old flat earth idea. And they are converting the gullible to their cause.
Load More Replies...Flatearthers are trolling people so they start thinking, proving and not just taking things for granted. Collateral damage are stupid people that take things literally and those that just believe everything and don't understand the whole concept. I see plenty of that in the comment section. Good times :D
So do flat earthers also not believe the space shuttle went into space & took pictures & brought them back showing the earth is round? The space shuttle that we can watch take off & the 2 that crashed or blew up? I think we have more to worry about with the evangelicals trying to bring about the apocalypse.
Best explanation I've seen so far that should satisfy some of the dummies.
It proves absolutely nothing. Still using the science of propaganda. It explains for you but what about the hundreds of other examples? Are you being paid for these too...Bye
ok wiseguy ! explain the flight paths that do not fly from point A to point B taking a wasted long way around not crossing the Indian Ocean and using Google tracking ...
Load More Replies...The guy trying to prove the Earth is round is totally wrong !! his math is all wrong also the naked eye has a vanishing point but if you zoom in you would see the land does not block anything !! you can shoot a lazor from one end to the other and its a straight shot with no blockage at all..
Sorry.
NOW GO TO A PLACE WHERE THE GAP IS WIDER AND ITS STILL FLAT Stacks of proof on Youtube like this one Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RIBO7VB0VE
Errrmmmm.. he could've just used the 'fisheye' effect on his computer/camera. Far less brain taxing!
over a hundred miles...or a thousand miles...still no curve.....This shows no curve rather than the curve lol...That'll show those flat Earthers eh? lol ...still no curve to be seen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvkGQVuNPsY
The round earth model predicts that the curvature of the earth would be imperceptible from this vantage point. Unless you can see an arc of 0.12 degrees, you must concur. Or show more accurate calculations, because these photos are consistent with the generally accepted round earth model.
Load More Replies...Except for the fact that the mouth of the bay isnt the length of the horizon he is seeing, because perspective ...
The two points I indicate on the panorama pic (Two Rivers and Silver Creek) are the exact same points shown on the map, and both are 8.4 miles apart regardless of perspective. And it won't change the calculations.
Load More Replies...UM! You people actually believe this guy proved the earth is round by doing this? NOT! We have to have an open mind on this discussion. But knowing and seeing how people in control LIE about every single thing they say is real. Case in point the food we eat. When investigated you see that a human being doesn't have teeth like an animal, so DUH! Not meat eaters. But we eat meat anyway and mess our bodies up. And every single thing they say to eat is no good for you. Milk, eggs, etc. Check that out as well. They're poisoning the air, food and even the bits of information you get. Nothing is what they say it is, SO, yes. THE EARTH IS DEFINITELY FLAT. If the aliens say it's round. It's Flat.
I’d it was flat why cant you see the other side of the land across the lake dumbass? Gravity would crush our organs and kill us if the world was flat.
