The Way This Guy Proves Earth Is Not Flat Is Brilliant

We all were there when Elon Musk was asking ‘The Flat Earth Society” the important questions, poking at the reasoning behind the conspiracy theory that Earth is, in fact, a flat disc. While flat-earthers seem to lack substantial arguments in the debate and it seems quite obvious what the answer to the age-old question is, Imgur user GregPagel’s views were challenged after he snapped a photo of Lake Michigan.

After examining the photos, Greg, a 47-year-old musician from Manitowoc, realized that the horizon he captured seemed quite flat, instantly raising doubts about everything he knew about the Earth globe. “I’ve often looked at the horizon over that lake–thousands of times–and wondered, “am I seeing a curve? I’m not sure. Maybe a little? Or is my mind playing tricks?” As a kid, I’d look at it a lot,” Greg told Bored Panda. So, he did what any other person would do, and he used science to find out if this popular conspiracy theory had any truth in it. “When I actually did the math and made the diagram, I actually felt a rush,” Pagel recalled. Using Google Earth and some calculations, he was able to figure it all out and share the surprising flat earth theory results with the world. Scroll down to see what he found out yourself!

I like the article and all that, but I have to say it bugs me when people use the "it looks flat in my photo" argument because lenses are curved and you can make anything look straight or curved by lilting the lens up or down, so it doesn't help either side of the debate because it's invalid to begin with. The pano part is also not valid because you have flat water, yet the road the photo was taken on now looks like a V, so it's obviously perspective distortion. I'm all for the flat earth debate (it's f*****g hilarious) so long as the people's "proofs" are a bit more well thought out than using photos which, again, are invalid for both sides of the debate.

Greg here. Good observations. Couple points--not and expert, I could be wrong. I think most lenses do not cause noticeable distortion. Fish-eye and other kinds, but I don't think my iPhone lens would. In fact, I did have the camera at different angles, but I (rather painstakingly) edited and cropped them so the horizon line matched. Pic 1 was actually angled lower than pic 2, but the line look the same. If there's distortion, wouldn't you say it's pretty negligible? And the Pano shot distorts things all over the place, but if you hold it steady, the horizon line looks *pretty much* like real life. Anyway, the point of the piece was that "The horizon looks pretty flat from here, no matter how you look at it." And then I tried to demonstrate why this would be true on a great big globe. Whether you think the earth is flat or round, it's going to look the same when you're a-sittin' on it! At least, I think so. I've never been to a flat planet, so it might look different. :)

Okay, I believe the earth is a sphere and all, but this isn't any kind of proof of that. It simply shows that the appearance of flatness is not a significant counter-argument.

OP here. EXACTLY!! The headline here really isn't accurate. This doesn't prove the earth is round, nor does it prove it's flat. It simply demonstrates what an earth-sized ball would look like from where we usually look at it. The Earth *looks* flat, but that doesn't mean it IS flat.

Genuine flat earthers do indeed exist and their "evidence" shows a lack of the most basic scientific knowledge. But it's just the tip of an even crazier iceberg. There's people who believe the moon is a hologram, that space doesn't exist and that we're encased in a glass dome, that satellites don't exist, aircraft have cloaking devices etc.

Scientifically and geometrically speaking, if you stand on a globe and look in a circle around you, everything SHOULD LOOK flat - not curved! The horizon around you should never curve, if you are on the same level. It is only when you become elevated high above the globe that you will start to see a curve - standing on a very tall mountain, or flying in a plane...

I love seeing articles from my fellow Wisconsinites. I have too stood on the shore of Lake Michigan thinking "am I seeing things or is there a curve?" I also feel like the best argument for the earth NOT being flat is that when you look across the lake you can't see Michigan - even with really really good binoculars - it's just lake. Surely if the earth was flat, at some point with some magnification you should theoretically see Michigan, especially if you are standing on the edge of Washington Island in Door County - since it's the furthest east point in the state, right?

I place my beliefs in FACTS, where are your facts? A small picture does make a believable theory. You people make me fear for the future of our planet. Go up in a plane and shoot pictures of the flat earth. Show some real facts, oops, there are none. I'm baffled. According to what people are saying about ships going over the horizon, they are gone about six miles at max. So, if your picture is of 8.4 miles from side to side, then you should not be able to see the other land, and from the side view, there should be a curve, right?

You took a picture of the horizon, assumed the earth is round by stating its circumference before proving that its round, and then used that to explain the flat appearance of the horizon is directly related to the earth being really large. Flat-earth believers aren't going to buy it anyway, and the post is pretty long to just prove what you have proved. What is the real intention behind it though?

The curvature of the earth works out at about 8” per mile (it’s just under that but list round it up for now) If the distance is 1.8 Miles then the curve at the horizon is shown at 14” in total. Good luck seeing that.

The curvature or lack of on photos doesn't proof anything. Either can be blamed on lens distortion depending on the point you want to make. The fact that you can't see the other side of the lake, however, is proof the earth is round. If the earth would be flat you'd see the other side of the lake (I guess that would be Ludington), but the curvature of the earth hides the other side behind the horizon.

Nice try to explain a flat horizon, but technically wrong. The reason why the horizon on our globe is flat is because the horizon is not a straight line over the earth's surface, but a circular line. When on the ocean, the distance to the horizon is in every direction the same, so the horizon is a flat circle 360 degrees around the observer. The observer is watching that flat circle from it's centre. And when you watch a circle from its centre, that circle is a flat line curved all around you. That's the real reason why on our globe the horizon is always flat in the eyes of the observer, until you are that high above that circle that you can see the circular shape of the horizon, like on pictures taken from space.

This photo shows Big Sable Point lighthouse in Ludington, MI, about 50 miles away from Manitowoc. If the earth was flat, you would be able to see the whole structure with a good telescope on a clear day. You can't, because the earth is not flat. Photo by Craig Sterken. The problem here is, we can also take pictures of over 90 miles, where the first mile of drop occurs. The funny thing about REAL spheres, is they curve in all directions. So a 90 mile horizon should have at least a half-mile high bulge of water clearly visible left to right. Yet strangely enough, it's perfectly flat and level. Forget degrees, you're not even showing a circle of 25,000 miles circumference. When you show that 1 degree honestly, it is just under 70 miles across, and the curvature WOULD be visible. If it existed.

The horizon looks flat because Earth isn't a cylinder. It's a sphere, so if you can see straight to the horizon in all directions, they're all equidistant and all equally high.

Flat earthers don't believe in maths, or science, they don't have or want proof, they just want to believe what they want to believe, who knows why, but you can't argue with that much obstinacy. The "logic" he used is based on simple calculus. Reduce a curve into smaller and smaller arcs and the arc "becomes" flat. That is how we can find the area under a curve.

Nice idea, but the geometry is wrong. Think of it as a very wide cone placed on a sphere so that they touch. Your eyes are at the apex of the cone, and the sphere is the earth. If the earth were a perfect sphere, the point at which the cone touches the sphere would be a circle. This is your visible horizon. The circle is *flat* relative to your "up" direction, ie. would be perpendicular to the direction of gravity through the earth. So basically you're looking out at an enormous circle. You're so close to the plane of the circle, relative to its radius, that it looks flat -- like holding a hula hoop around your head at close to eye level and then looking out at it.

Ehm no. He did not prove that the earth is round. He proved that a flat earth and a round earth would both show a flat horizon. He only disproved one flat-earther argument, not the flat earth theory itself. Had he gone to the beach, he would have noticed that he could see less of the rocks at the two points than on his elevated house. This would have been a proof of a round earth.

OP here. Thank you! I was bothered by the headline. One point: These pictures were taken not from my house, but from the very edge of a cliff maybe 10-15 feet above the beach. Walking down to the beach wouldn't have changed the arc angle enough to notice, and it wouldn't have hidden any of the rocks (you'll have to take my word for it--I've walked that beach plenty!). It certainly wouldn't have changed the calculations!

Cute story - but useless in reality (I know the earth is a sphere - just saying that this exercise is nonsensical). The appearance of a curve does not depend on the arc of your view, which is the core of this misguided "revelation" - but on the elevation (altitude, height) of your viewpoint. Consider standing on a lighthouse surrounded by ocean as far as the eye can see. Water extends to the horizon. What an interesting word! That's where we get "horizontal" from. There is no curve visible. The horizon isn't a series of indiscernible scallops - it's a smooth, FLAT, LINE for the full 360 degrees around you. So you need to get very high up. The curve becomes measurable (not to the eye though) on photographs taken at least 20,000 ft (6,000 meters) above the earth. The human eye will only begin to perceive the curve when the observer is at somewhere above 40,000 ft (12,190 m). So modern airliners won't get you high enough but the Concorde did, as do some military "spy planes". Sorry.

The round earth model predicts that the curvature of the earth would be imperceptible from this vantage point. Unless you can see an arc of 0.12 degrees, you must concur. Or show more accurate calculations, because these photos are consistent with the generally accepted round earth model.

UM! You people actually believe this guy proved the earth is round by doing this? NOT! We have to have an open mind on this discussion. But knowing and seeing how people in control LIE about every single thing they say is real. Case in point the food we eat. When investigated you see that a human being doesn't have teeth like an animal, so DUH! Not meat eaters. But we eat meat anyway and mess our bodies up. And every single thing they say to eat is no good for you. Milk, eggs, etc. Check that out as well. They're poisoning the air, food and even the bits of information you get. Nothing is what they say it is, SO, yes. THE EARTH IS DEFINITELY FLAT. If the aliens say it's round. It's Flat.

"A small arc 'looks like' a straight line" is not a proof for "this straight line is a small arc". "Looks like" isn't proof of anything. Maybe its a parabola? It, too, "looks like" a straight line when you take a small enough section.

OP here. For the record, I did this just for fun, to see if I could do it. I also thought it might be useful for some of my students (I'm a substitute teacher). I had no intention of converting flat-earthers or of proving the Earth is round, which this doesn't do, anyway! Frankly, I had no idea so many people would have seen it!

Go up in a plane and shoot pictures of the flat earth. Show some real facts, oops, there are none.

The space shuttle that we can watch take off & the 2 that crashed or blew up? I think we have more to worry about with the evangelicals trying to bring about the apocalypse.

Don't need any math to understand that the earth is not flat… just take a rocket to the ISS… and see :p

It proves absolutely nothing. Still using the science of propaganda. It explains for you but what about the hundreds of other examples? Are you being paid for these too...Bye

There is theoretical curvature, but thee is no measurable curvature. Earth is flat.

The guy trying to prove the Earth is round is totally wrong !! his math is all wrong also the naked eye has a vanishing point but if you zoom in you would see the land does not block anything !! you can shoot a lazor from one end to the other and its a straight shot with no blockage at all..

The two points I indicate on the panorama pic (Two Rivers and Silver Creek) are the exact same points shown on the map, and both are 8.4 miles apart regardless of perspective. And it won't change the calculations.

It's Flat.

I’d it was flat why cant you see the other side of the land across the lake dumbass? Gravity would crush our organs and kill us if the world was flat.

"A small arc 'looks like' a straight line" is not a proof for "this straight line is a small arc". "Looks like" isn't proof of anything. Maybe its a parabola? It, too, "looks like" a straight line when you take a small enough section.

This is such a stupid article. Something for globe to drool over. I have plenty of photos from military helicopters using wide angle lenses showing 100-250 miles on the horizon. There is NO CURVE over large bodies of water. Earth isn't Flat. Just all of the oceans.
