Cooking basic meals. It’s not just about impressing friends; it’s essential for survival and saving money. Plus, nothing beats the satisfaction of not having to rely on takeout every night.
Thank goodness my 13 yr old boy thinks he's getting out of school (homeschooling). He's like I'm going to make banana muffins, 5x the recipe....heeheehee he's doing fractions n multiplying n reading n cooking.
Cooking and baking are pretty much the only times I use some of the maths I was taught in school.
Load More Replies...I had too cook for myself when I went to uni. No money to eat out. Fortunately I used to help my mum in the kitchen. It was very basic stuff during the week, but three of us got together at the weekend and took it in turns to buy and cook a Sunday Roast. It was the one decent meal we got a week and wasn't too expensive with three sharing.
Totally agree. Not sure if it's my generation (x) but I have met so many men that can't even boil water. Sad and pathetic.
How to thank others when appropriate and how to apologize when appropriate.
The more you do it, the easier it is - and being a Brit, it's almost as natural as my breathing, ;-)
Load More Replies...To be able to apologise properly is a sign of strength. Far too many see it a weakness and refuse blankly it's ok to be and do wrong as long as you acknowledge that.
Same scenario in the movie Unhinged with Russell Crowe.
Load More Replies...That handshake looks super weak! Lol. As a woman I must say that a firm handshake can win you respect from a lot of people (men) who otherwise ridicule women. Perhaps even more when you are in academia and shake hands with someone who has a more hands-on work (handymen, mechanics and that sort). I know it is pretty sexist to say this, but I speak from experience. And I would LOVE for it to not be true. I hope it may only apply for older generations but for me it still applies.
Looking back, my family NEVER apologized for anything. It wasn't until I met a new friend who was upfront about apologizing that I realized it was okay to say sorry.
How to research topics and vet information sources.
TIL I learnt the meaning of the word "vet" that has nothing to do with animal doctors :)
I was going to say that learning to research veterinarian topics if you have pets, is also important to know, as cats and dogs have different medical needs than things that you can assume or extrapolate based on human needs. But yeah. They mean veterans. Not veterinarians.

How to accept the word no.
I have worked in customer care, all my adult life and entitlement can be seen at all ends of the spectrum. However, the wealthiest people seem to struggle the most with a two letter word.
What fun is it being rich if people can still tell you “no”? Part of the joy of being rich is supposed to be that you can buy anything including “yes”.
I know this sounds politically charged but by 30, people should be able to still hold a conversation and be respectful while also disagreeing. It's a common thing this era for people to storm off and talk c**p when they disagree. Blocking people, banning people, etc.
The world has over 8 billion people in it. It's pretentious to assume that everyone should always agree with you.
That depends. If your political "opinion" denies people basic human rights I am done being respectful.
I refuse to discuss with people who think basic humans rights shouldn't extend to certain people THEY don't think are worthy jUsT bEcAuSe. You cannot knock sense into these people.
I don't think all 8 billion people should agree with my opinion on what toppings are good on pizza. But I do think all 8 billion people should agree that ALL 8 BILLION PEOPLE DESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND HAPPINESS. And until the GOP gets out of our doctors office's, our schools and our bedrooms (notice, none of those things have anything to do with politics) I will continue to scream this as often and as loudly as I can.
One of the big problems regarding this matter is that some people believe their opinions are facts.
I've found that if you DO discuss uncomfortable topics rationally, most times you will find agreement on most things. It's some details that need sorting.
Ewwww no, people have limited energy and time, being wise/smart means allocating that energy/time appropriately and not wasting it trying to have a discussion with any rando.
"there ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys. There's only you and me, and we just disagree"
Of course bored panda regulars are going to respond to this post with political exaggeration and bashing 😂. Y'all just can't help yourselves. This is like reading through the Fox News comments section but on the opposite side of the spectrum.
Set healthy boundaries. Stop letting people invalidate your worth or push you in a direction you aren’t comfortable going. Don’t be afraid to walk away from people, jobs, or situations that are bad for you.
This is so important! Learning your worth, learning how to say no and not feel bad about it, learn to set personal boundaries and don't feel guilty, these are all things that you're told, but you have to learn them before the lesson sticks. I didn't learn these by the time I was 30, but thankfully, I'm learning these things now. And I got to say, it can be really hard to learn to step away from something that you know that you could fix that you know that you could take care of, but just learning how to step away from doing it? Letting other people do it or let it not get done at all, man that is really hard for someone like me who likes to see things done well.
How to be alone. Sometimes it’s good to just be by yourself.
I learned long ago that other people are the source of many of my problems. Disconnect and have a few friends it's a better life.
And how to entertain yourself. Some people just don't know how to be alone, and don't know how to fill their time. Find a few hobbies that you love, and enjoy doing them. You don't always have to rely on other people to entertain you.
I love being alone, tbh - a little bit too much, probably. Being an introvert (which is a nuisance to others), I feel uncomfortable being around too many peeps. It exhausts me, and I spend most of the time looking at my watch and wondering when it will be appropriate for me to leave. I'm very lucky that my family are understanding, and don't pressure me to go to social events (except small family Birthday/Xmas get-togethers).
I always said, you need to learn to be okay alone before you get into relationships with other people, incase things go wrong. Sure, it'll still suck to lose a friend or SO, but at least you'll know you'll be okay without them and be able to recover.
Had a new person sent out to relieve a fire lookout about a 45 min flight from town. They had applied for the job, gone through the training, orientation and spoken with other lookout staff. They were on the radio in tears screaming to be picked up before the heli was back. They had never spent any time alone. Guess it is not for everyone. At the other end, the regular L/O person had to be pried out with a crowbar to get them to leave. Just loved being out there.
How to choose good fruit, and vegetables at the grocery store!
Yes please. Leave tha damned avocados alone. The sticker will say "ripe ready to eat" or "ripen at home" at least they do in my country.
Load More Replies...Fresh cucumbers. Get the hard ones that don't give when you squeeze them (lightly). If you get the soft ones or the ones that give when you squeeze them, they will only be good for a day or two. The hard ones will last up to 4 days, maybe more.
But what, seriously? Most fruit and veg is basically ripe or ripening when it hits a store. Unless you're at a farmers market or similar.
Step 1 don't buy oranges at a grocery store. They pick them green and they have no flavor. Go to a farmers market.
You know that oranges are orange not because they are ripe but because it was cold when they were on the trees. Yes, the cold weather makes oranges have that color.

Basic financial literacy.
Shouldn't need to come to reddit to ask if it's better to pay down your mortgage or the micro loan you took out from the Albanian mafia.
You don't want to mess with the Albanian mafia. In my country they are more into selling d***s.
Apparently Albanian mafia is causing a lot of problems in Ecuador these days. Wouldn't have thought so.
Load More Replies...Finances should be taught in schools. How to balance a checkbook, create a budget, etc.
How to make a decision based on facts and objective evidence from credible sources.
Too many people would prefer to take the word of their cult leader over facts and evidence. EVIDENCE!!!! Even worse, when the evidence is so striking and impossible to dispute, some will still say it's "fake news" - and that sh!t is bonkers.
Your opinion and political view is not a fact. Just because somebody votes for a candidate you don't agree with doesn't make them wrong.

Basic car maintenance/knowledge. i.e., changing a tire, checking oil levels, adding oil if needed, changing windshield wipers. A little of preventative maintenance goes a long way.
I don't even bother with oils changes on our 2018, need to have arms like an Orangutan. I still do my 2008 pickup.
Load More Replies...I could do all that on my Renault 4L, back in the day. Now cars are so full of electronics that I wouldn't dare touch it, except maybe to change a tire.
My friend saved hundreds of dollars doing some simple things himself.
Listening. Everything doesn’t have to be about you, and you don’t have to have all the answers, sometimes just listening to someone is all they need.
As a chef I’ve got to go with basic food hygiene. Learning how to store your food properly, knowing temperature danger zones, cross contamination & basic COSHH.
The amount of times I’ve had to bite my tongue seeing p**s poor standards in friends & family’s kitchens makes me anxious to eat there.
Some of us do. I cook all my meals, and my food is stored properly. Plus, my kitchen is spotless.
Household budgeting.
How to pay a bill FFS. Taxes? Mortgage interest? Credit card dangers? Credit card interest? They don't even teach kids in school how to balance a checkbook. They should be teaching some type of financial responsibility at least... but THIS... this is what's important in Louisiana: "Louisiana is the first state to require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in all public school classrooms, beginning in 2025" Yeahhh, cuz that's what the next generation will need to survive.
CPR.
It's one day out of your life in exchange for all the rest of the days of someone else's.
I do a refresher course every 3 years, to redo my certification. It's never been required for my work, it's always been a bonus that I bring to the workplace, but I figure, how horrible will I feel if a loved one ever has an emergency and I'm just standing there and the only thing I can do is try to call an ambulance while they're dying? Taking a CPR course, taking a first aid course, it takes a day. You can save a life.
Think about this: It fails 90% of the time. But duyam: If it's me they are pumpin' on they better be trying- not of that sill assed "tv cpr" they often do-- I want the real deal, no f****n' around. I want to be in that 10% that it works for.
Swim. Amazing how many people don't know how to swim, go in the water.
Even if you don't know how to swim, at least know how to float... I live in Australia and we used to watch Bondi rescue in PDHPE and we always see statistics of tourists getting into Aussie beaches and almost drowning bc they don't know how to swim or any surf safety.
Interesting. I live in the USA and am watching Bondi Rescue right now
Load More Replies...So do we in Germany. Theorectically at least. Many public indoor pools are shut down so this is becoming a big concern.
We have to do swimming lessons every year at primary school in Australia.
I can't swim. But I can roll over and float. Good enough if I happen to fall into water.
Being on time. Being late for everything is not an adult activity.
How to have uncomfortable conversations about feelings and defining boundaries. People who don’t have these skills cause more problems than they’re worth.
It also 50% depends on the person you're discussing it with. There's a reason so many peeps just bite their tongues and inwardly deal with it - esp if you're introverted or are not a voluble peep.
I am not a peep. Those sugar-coated marshmallow things are pretty disgusting.
Load More Replies...It can be really hard to discuss with people how their actions and behavior make you feel, discussing it honestly, without them getting defensive. But this is a good skill to be able to sit down with someone and explain to them why you feel hurt. Don't keep it all inside. The only person who will replay the moment over and over in their head is you, and that doesn't help.
How to read a map.
Or, as REM advised, "Stand in the place where you are, now face north"
I've moved a lot and the first thing I did back then, before Garmin and smart phones, was buy a map, hang it on the wall, and use push pins for locations. That really makes me feel old.
Load More Replies...Do laundry.
We were taught that at school, though. Like many other basic life skills like grocery shopping, cooking, baking, cleaning, budgeting, first aid.... Many students still have learned them at home before that.
Saying no. Get really good at saying yes in your 20s. It opens lots of doors and teaches you to get outside of your comfort zone to grow. By 30, be ruthless with your time and get good at saying no thoughtfully, politely, and firmly.
Stop buying things on credit
Stop speeding in parking lots
Be nice to others
Realize you aren’t as smart as you think you are. Learn from other people
It’s OK to put your phone down and experience and enjoy the world
No one thinks you are cool because they can hear your car stereo…when your windows are rolled down
Again. Being nice and kind to people will help make the world a better place .
“Realize you aren’t as smart as you think you are. Learn from other people” 100% agree!
Tell time on an analog clock.
Yes. Yes. Yes. This, and how to read a map (see above) and how to ask for time or directions.
How to walk away from a situation with escalating tensions. Some guy is getting angrier and angrier for any reason, you need to know how to just raise your hands up, apologize genuinely, back away about 6 feet, and then turn around and walk away. This can save you from getting into a fist fight, to saying something you can't ever take back. You can use this with random people on the street, at bars, or even with friends and family that you might get into it with.
If you want to learn more about deescalating a tense situation, check out Verbal Judo
Not everyone can be your friend, learn to walk away from people that threaten your peace of mind.
Sounds like giving up on people but it's more about self preservation.
How to advocate: for yourself, your children, your loved ones. Especially when it comes to healthcare, the system is broken and you need to be proactive in getting what you need.
Cooking basic meals, budgeting, maintenance (of anything you own that need it), and more importantly, communication.
Not just cooking a basic meal but knowing what constitutes good nutrition.
How not to think everything revolves around them.
Insight and personal responsibility.
Being able to express your needs, feelings, and boundaries clearly and respectfully.
1- basic home maintenance. Learn how to change a vacuum belt, fix a door hinge, hang curtains/blinds, unclog a drain, ect.
2- basic car maintenance. Learn how to change a tire, change a car light bulb, check/change your oil, ect.
3- cooking. Not just microwaving something or making a hamburger helper meal. Actual cooking, from scratch.
4- how to have a disagreement with an argument. Disagreements to not need to involve yelling or verbally attacking the other person. Get your facts together and present your side logically.
5- how to speak professionally. When you have to talk to professional people (like a landlord, banker, maintenance worker, or your boss) it's always extremely beneficial to use sir/ma'am and avoid cussing or using words that are to casual (like bro or dude). If you go into these discussions speaking professionally yourself they will respect you more and be more willing to listen to you.
6- know your own habits. Pro tip, tidy your house up before you sit down and relax after work. I have a bad habit where if i sit down to relax after work i dont want to get back up and do anything that feels like more work. Ik this and so i have gotten a routine to work around it. So when i get home from work the first thing i do is a quick tidying up of my house before i let myself sit down and relax.
Manage your healthcare. Booking appointments, getting lab work, knowing how to contact your insurance company.
In the US, how to navigate your health to insurance's web site to find providers that are in plan to get the most from it.
And when you DO get lab work, measure latest results from previous results and look for lower/higher numbers
How income tax works.
Not so much a skill but knowing how to admit when you are wrong. Nothing worse than a person that continues to argue their incorrect information.
Basic handyman and home repair skills, like fixing a running toilet, hanging shelving on the wall, etc.
You should have sexual discipline.
I'm not talking about people who have high/low body counts, I'm not talking about people who have a sexual appetite. I'm talking about people who don't exercise *control* over that sexual appetite.
If you're 30+ and you can't go more than 1-2 weeks without having sex with a stranger, or having sex at all, you're not "sex positive" you have a problem.
I’m sorry, but not having sex for 2 weeks is what is problematic. A person may have a sexual appetite of the sort that they like to have sexual activity a few days a weeks, or even daily! Sex is good for us. We need to be SMART though, and as safe as possible!
How to use forgiveness to resolve issues, both with others and with yourself. The ability to forgive yourself will massively improve your mental state.
Also basic life skills: How to live cordially with another person. How to really clean a room. How to cook a few good decent full meals. How to do maintenance and minor repairs on home and cars. How to handle finances.
How to advocate for yourself.
Via knowing your boundaries.
For when you need medical help.
To cutting ties & walking away from harmful people/situations.
Understanding how to be your own support system.
Communicating directly & seeing things from a birds eye perspective, not just your own biased viewpoint.
How to make small talk.
Um...no. How to be comfortable in silence if you have nothing worthwhile to say. I have no interest in your opinions on the weather or latest sports game.
Honestly, everyone should know how to budget by the time they’re 30. I mean, I once treated myself to takeout every night for a month because I “forgot” I had bills to pay. Spoiler: I ended up living off instant noodles and regret. 😂 If you can master the art of not blowing your entire paycheck on snacks and impulse buys, you’re basically a financial wizard!
The absolute basics of car maintenance. How to change a tire SAFELY. What to do in an automotive emergency when driving. What the different warning lights on your dash mean.
Changing a tire.
I think that was the fourth time on this list. Which is great, so now we know how to change all four tyres.
How to humanely euthanize a sick cow with dynamite.
Waste-Bobcat9849:
It’s good practice for dealing with stranded whales
It may be possible to burn this down to 10-20 important things without losing much content. But I may just be over-critical these days.
All those people talking about 'changing a tyre (or tire)' surely mean changing a wheel? Changing a car tyre requires special equipment. I can change a wheel. Maybe they' mean bicycle tyres? I wouldn't know, as I've never owned one.
They mean taking the tire and wheel off the vehicle and replacing it with another one. It's a commonly used term. I have never heard someone say "I had to change the wheel on my car because I had a flat tire."
