Karen Asks Priest Why He Tolerates ‘Prostitutes’ Following Him, Gets Shut Down

In the Karen world, talking to the manager is a sport in its own league. But what if it challenges someone from a very unusual background? Because when it comes to entitled people who love digging into the lives of others, nothing is sacred.

This is what happened to an Anglican priest named Daniel D. Brereton, who got bombarded by a woman enraged by his followers. The priest posted a series of screenshots on Twitter from the DMs he received from a “very concerned” follower. It turns out, this person couldn’t wrap their head around how come Daniel tolerates his followers who work in the sex industry.

But the priest had a lot to respond to on the matter, and his mic-drop reply blew up on Twitter with 90.6K likes. It seems like talking to the church manager didn’t quite work out.

It’s no secret that the subject of religion itself is a slippery one that can easily generate unwanted conflict between people of various beliefs. No wonder The US Census Bureau has not asked questions about religion since the 1950s and it’s still widely considered rude to do so even in informal settings.

When it comes to tolerating others, a famous study done by the influential psychologist Gordon W. Allport in the 1960s showed that religious beliefs in general are positively associated with a willingness to sacrifice for one’s beliefs, and a greater tolerance of (outsiders).

There’s a whole different story when it comes to the social facets of religion, such as attendance, which can “promote greater hostility” towards people of other faiths. That means that certain rituals which affirm your bond with like-minded individuals can make you more hostile toward those who fall out of the circle.

As a Christian, I get tired of people like this who think that they have the right to judge who someone else talks to. By judging this priest because of who follows him on social media, this woman is sinning more than he is. There's a difference between a good Christian who respects everyone and a judgmental douchebag who uses religion to be in other people's business.

As a Christian, realizing that atheists and people of other religions can still respect and appreciate Christians, and not only see the hypocrites and sexual assaulters who claim to be Christians, is very refreshing.

I'm an atheist. My very good friend is a devout Christian. We often talk to each other about religion with an open and respectful mind. We both try to help others and are frustrated with those who claim to be Christian and who are unkind to those who think differently.

I may be an agnostic raised by two lapsed Catholics, but even I can tell the difference between a true Christian and a poser. If you berate a priest for “tolerating” sex workers, as if they’re lesser human beings, then you are a poser. The Bible doesn’t teach tolerance, it teaches love. For everybody, regardless. It’s the most difficult thing you can do. We don’t always practice it, especially when we don’t like the other person. I mean, it’s hard to dredge up any kind thoughts about Hitler, for example (the only one I can think of is how much he loved his dogs). But to think yourself so high and mighty just because you go to church on Sunday is the opposite of the teachings. If God or Jesus (or whatever deity people believe in) ever came back, people like this Karen would be the first to burn, because of their conceit in thinking they’re better than others just because they go through the motions of faith but don’t really practice it.
