Working with customers is a challenging job because you never know what kind of people you will meet and not all of them will be nice to you. It’s a job that requires an infinite amount of patience and excellent communication skills.

But sometimes unexpected things happen. TikToker and shop owner Austin Scott recently shared his experience with a customer that thought the stickers in his store were $5 for 20 pieces when in reality there was no such promotion. So when her daughters came home with stickers that they paid $126 for, the angry mom left a negative review that Austin thought he would share with the internet.

A shop owner couldn’t stay silent about getting a bad review when he felt he has done nothing wrong

Austin Scott is a TikToker with nearly a million followers and he also owns a small business, The Neighborhood, that sells keychains, accessories, clothing and stickers. One of his recent videos was a rant about a customer that left him a bad review.

Apparently, two girls came into Austin’s store and chose 40 stickers they wanted to buy. Each sticker costs $4, so the store owner was glad to do such a big sale just for stickers.

A woman let her daughters take 40 stickers thinking they were on sale, but they actually were $4 each

It wasn’t unusual for someone to buy so many stickers, so Austin didn’t really think that much of it. He explained that if someone buys so many stickers, he gives them a secret discount, which is buy 3, get 1 free. And on top of that, he gave an extra 10 percent discount to the girls because they were young and he just wanted to show them gratitude for making such a big purchase.

The girls paid by card and after they left, Austin joked that his mom wouldn’t have let him spend that much money on stickers. Turns out, the mom of these two girls didn’t appreciate that either as the next morning, the store employee found a Google review giving the store one star.

The customer left a one-star review making it seem that Austin took advantage of her daughters

In the review, the woman wrote that she was very disappointed in the store as she saw a sign saying that the stickers were $5 for 20 pieces, so she told her daughters that they could take 20 each. But in reality, the stickers were much more expensive. Austin answered to the customer that she must have been mistaken. He assumed that she might have seen the sign under incense sticks that indeed said 20 for $5, but that doesn’t mean that other things have the same discount too. He also added that despite the fact that there was no discount for stickers, he still gave her daughters a deal, and then he thanked her for supporting small businesses and artists that create these stickers.

Other reviews were glowing as people were saying that they loved both the items that were sold in the shop and the staff. The most recent comments were talking about the negative review and people were calling the woman a Karen for being mad at the shop owner for her own mistake.

The woman did not respond to that in the Google reviews, but in the TikTok video Austin mentioned that she commented on her Square receipt, “I’m sorry, my husband and I seen the same sign. It said ‘stickers 20 for $5,’ but that’s fine. If it weren’t there you wouldn’t have gave them the first 20 for that price. You took advantage of an easy situation with two young girls. The word will spread.”

The only thing that was $5 for 20 pieces were incense sticks and Austin assumes that this was what caused the misunderstanding

Austin then pointed out again what discount he gave to them and that it was all on the receipt. You can see in the video how frustrated the store owner was and how he couldn’t comprehend how this misunderstanding could have occurred.

Another thing that bugged him was that the woman didn’t reach out to him and try to find out what the actual situation was but went straight to write a hateful review, which, of course, was unpleasant to everyone working at the shop.

Here is the full video of the story

People in the comments were taking Austin’s side. Some of them thought that the woman probably realized that she was in the wrong but her pride couldn’t let her admit that. What do you think of this situation and what’s your opinion about how both Austin and the girls’ mom reacted to it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

People who saw the video were all supporting Austin and couldn’t understand the mom’s attitude

It only takes one jerky customer like this to ruin someone's store or get an innocent person fired. It's time to put that misused idea that "the customer is always right" deep, deep in the ground.

She should not have left a bad review over something she misunderstood, but I question why the girls were allowed to pay for a large purchase with a card that was not theirs. I think he should have at least checked with the mom that the amount was OK, and that they had permission to use the card.

I can't understand why Americans don't seem to care who is presenting a card. In the UK you absolutely cannot use any card that is not in your own name. It boggles my mind that this is a normalised thing.

Is it legal to let kids shop unsupervised with the parents card? And not sure of the rules in that country, in Sweden she could have just returned the lot. Both sides have a responsibility here.

Yeah, I'm surprised it doesn't mention whether she went back in with the daughters and asked to return the stickers. Sure, it was her mistake, but it was a genuine one. She shouldn't be leaving that vindictive review, but I don't see any reason to hate on her that much.

As a kid, I once spent 120 euros on pens, pencils, markers etc. and my mom just got angry at me, not the store that made the sale. It was my own money though, and I didn't really have a permission to spend it all on pens, but still.

While she shouldn’t have left a bad review he probably should not have taken such a large order from children. Clearly the card was not theirs. Mom should have also not sent kids in on their own. It just feels a little odd that he doesn’t question kids spending over $100 with a credit card. I get these are special stickers but I had no idea stickers could be so much🤣 good on him for supporting the local community but stop taking order from children!

I’m surprised by the down vote. Did you watch the video or just read the article. He has an air of arrogance to him. Sure she should have talked to him first but he does say she reached out via the credit card app. He was vague if it was before or after. Then he says oh people buy large orders of stickers and right after talks about being shocked by the large order. I’m sorry but he has responsibility here too. If he had just asked the girls to have their mom come back this would have been avoided

Ask the mother to return to the store for a full refund. Undo the transaction, as they were minors. Put everyone back in the position they were before the sale was made.

Seems an obvious case for a refund. Never would I expect $4 for a sticker. OK, so they're created by local artists... but who expects that?

I’ve been in this exact same situation as a merchant and it suuucks. Don’t send your debit/credit card with your kids! Merchants aren’t responsible for non-returnable items if your kids screw up and overspend. We don’t know how rich your family is or what your kids’ allowance is. Send them with only cash so they can’t go over the allowed amount. Your only other option is to report your card stolen and file a police report. Good luck with that. Sorry, Karen. You’ll know next time.

I had to check the store and the stickers and they didn't seem appropriate for kids as the mother points out. Either these girls were at least teenagers or the mother is incredibly relapse not caring about which kind of material her daughters consume. These stickers are all very cool and nice, but they are totally for someone older. Most of the stickers have either funny play with words or straight-up inappropriate content for kids. Which is great, I mean I would buy them all, but I'm an adult. I wouldn't let my kids wandering around in a store that's clearly for a more mature audience. Now, as a teenager, I went out with my mom's card a lot of times. Nobody ever asked me about my mother's whereabouts. However, I knew better than to spend $120 unjustified. The daughters listening to the total amount should have apologized and said that they couldn't take it. Entitled as most parents are this seller asking for confirmation could turn very bad, everyone is at fault.

Not taking away from the fact that the mum made a mistake, but is $4 the going rate of stickers now, it seems kind of expensive even if they are made by an independent artist?

Ok wait there is something off here. Hear me out. He says he gave them 11 free stickers. That would be 29 stickers at $4 each which is $116 plus another 10 percent off. That’s $104.4 even with tax it doesn’t come to $126 as he claimed or $120 as she says. But her explanation doesn’t make sense either as it comes to $100 plus tax. I’m telling you something off here. All right invested enough on this!

Purchased: 40 stickers at $4 each = $160 dollars. Subtract 10 stickers from total because it's "buy 4 get 1 free", now you get 30 stickers at $4 each = $120, not ocunting tax. He didn't give them TEN PERCENT off. Your math is off. And he may have mistyped 11, but the earlier explanation makes it clear that it was $4 per sticker, but if you buy 4 stickers, the fourth one is "free", ergo, the girls effectively bought 30 stickers at $4, and it wasn't "free" stickers in that sense. It was a promotional offer. There was never 10 percent off.

I never would have left my children in another store in the first place. Thank goodness nothing happened except for paying more than she thought. And her and her husband both left these little girls alone in a store? For one, I always verify sale items, because it's usually always for only specific items, and definitely if I wasn't going to be there for the transaction. I always checked my receipts,or when items scan, sometimes the system isn't updated, etc. Still can't believe she left two young girls unsupervised for so long. You know it was probably at least an hour or more picking out that many stickers, and this was fine for her? I never let my sons out of my sight until they each reached 16 in public. I had 4, my #1 fear was someone kidnapping one of them or something happening to them.

And if she had given him permission to use her card for the stickers. Hell, a lot of kids have their own cards now. Since everything is self pay now, u don't know the name on the card anyway anymore. Depending on the area, it wouldn't have been strange for kids to drop that much on merchandise.

So...why did she leave two young girls with her card then? Or didn't go straight back to the store after checking the receipt? I'm sure if they weren't used or damaged he would've been more than happy to do a refund.

"no questions asked" he says lol but as a responsible merchant he should have asked questions and verified with the mother that the charge was ok before he proceeded with the sale.there's a difference between a $20 sale and a $120 sale when you're dealing with a minor. had he handled it correctly he wouldn't have gotten a bad review at all but maybe a great review from a happy parent. for me. both parties share the blame to some extent.

The mom and the shop owner are wrong. The sign (in the picture) just says "20 for $5" but does not specify it is for incense or stickers. Sure the sign is near the incense so a customer might ask to clarify what item is 20 for $5. It is also really okay if a customer leaves a review and is not the end of the world. Though it would have been more productive and polite to contact the store directly. The mom didn't read the receipt which is super annoying. But the shop owner sounds like someone who should not be working with the public at all. Maybe the shop owner just needs a vacay but dang that was all uncalled for. As is the name calling - stop calling people sexist terms like Karen and them what there behavior is (like discriminatory, racist, classist, etc.)

All she had to do was return it! Simple...and what store allows little kids to use someone else's cc without ID or a parent present?!?

We had someone leave a one star review because I didn't say hello to them when they walked in the door. Talk about keyboard power trip.

Seems like a mix up to me. I am more bothered why Bored Panda perpetually uses the misogynist, ageist and racially-charged slur Karen against women who may or may not have a legitimate complaint. I'm baffled as to why so many women support it particularly young ones. You'll be there one day and sooner than you think.

I'm confused by the whole thing. How young were the daughters? Why didn't the mother verify the purchase price at POS? Why didn't she tried getting a refund rather than leave a review?

"no questions asked" he says lol but as a responsible merchant he should have asked questions and verified with the mother that the charge was ok before he proceeded with the sale.there's a difference between a $20 sale and a $120 sale when you're dealing with a minor. had he handled it correctly he wouldn't have gotten a bad review at all but maybe a great review from a happy parent. for me. both parties share the blame to some extent.

Yeah that lady doesn't know diddley about stickers. I went through a sticker phase on redbubble a couple of years ago. They aren't cheap but someone designed these stickers and put effort into them. Depending on the size too.

As a shopper there is a long-standing adage for you it’s called “buyer beware”. It is on you to pay attention not the owners, If you’re confused then just ask.

Everyone seem to be assuming that these were "kids" as in minors. They could well be older teens and anyway, they were there with the mum so the owner would have assumed she approved.

Amazing to see so much support come to his store in reaction to this incredibly rude customer review. Excited to spend my money there. They ship, and that “Everything is Doomed” keychain was too good to pass up. 🤣
