Sweden is the largest and most populous of the Nordic countries and has a roughly 1,000-year-long continuous history as a sovereign state.
It rose from backwardness and poverty into a highly developed post-industrial society, with a standard of living and life expectancy that rank among the highest in the world.
So let's take a closer look at how this constitutional monarchy looks today.
We at Bored Panda put together a list of photos that paint a pretty accurate picture of Sweden's land, people, and culture, so continue scrolling to check out just how unique it is. Just beware, you can also end up opening a new browser tab and buying some plane tickets...

What Is This, A Record Store For Mice? Well Yes It Is And Someone Built It Yesterday In The Swedish Town Of Lund
Roughly the same size as California, Sweden is usually divided into three regions: to the north is Norrland, the vast mountain and forest region; in central Sweden is Svealand, an expanse of lowland in the east and highland in the west; and in the south is Götaland, which includes the Småland highlands and, at the southern extremity, the small but rich plains of Skåne.
The Swedish coastline is mostly rocky, with hundreds of small, sometimes wooded islands. Ground by glacial ice in the same direction, they share a common rounded shape. This type of coast, known as skärgård, is found in both the east and the west, especially around Stockholm and Gothenburg.

About 15 percent of the country lies within the Arctic Circle, so from about late May until mid-July, sunlight lasts around the clock north of the Arctic Circle, but, even as far south as Stockholm, the nights during this period have only a few hours of semidarkness.
In mid-December, on the other hand, Stockholm experiences only about 5.5 hours of daylight, and areas in the far north remain in nearly 20 hours of total darkness, relieved by a mere 4 hours of twilight.

The north-to-south extension of the country and the higher elevation of the northern part creates regional differences in winter climate.
The northern interior receives heavy snowfall for up to eight months of the year and has severe temperatures that drop as low as −22 to −40 °F (−30 to −40 °C).
The average January temperature in Haparanda, for example, at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia is 10 °F (−12 °C). Sea ice covers the Gulf of Bothnia from November to May. But in southern Sweden, snowfall is irregular and the average January temperatures range between 23 and 32 °F (−5 and 0 °C). Coastal waters seldom freeze.
Summer temperatures in the country vary far less, although summer is much shorter in the north.

Although different groups of immigrants have influenced Swedish culture through the centuries, the population has been quite homogeneous, both ethnically and religiously.
It's only since World War II that notable change has occurred. From 1970 to the early 1990s, net immigration accounted for about three-fourths of the country's population growth, and by far, most of the outsiders came from the neighboring Nordic countries, with which Sweden shares a common labor market.

In the 1980s, Sweden began to receive an increasing number of asylum seekers from Asia and Africa, including countries such as Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Eritrea, and Somalia, as well as from Latin America that were suffering under repressive governments.
Then, from 2010 to 2014, the number of people seeking asylum in Sweden expanded dramatically, reaching more than 80,000 in 2014, and that number doubled to more than 160,000 in 2015. Thus, by 2016, one in six Swedish residents had been born outside the country, and Sweden, experiencing the mass influx of migrants, enacted new and more stringent immigration restrictions.

Whether we're talking about IKEA or even H&M, Swedish design is one of the country's main exports and has permeated the world consciousness in the last century.
It is known for its emphasis on sustainability and functionality; Swedes like things to look good, but they also like to keep it simple.
But if you're visiting Sweden and want to bring back a little local design with you, look out for more unique finds from local artists, interior designers, and smaller fashion labels. In Stockholm, you can visit the Design District located in the trendy Södermalm neighborhood.

This Is A Solitary Confinement Cell From The Toughest Prison In Sweden
Yeah but it works. Scandinavian countries have lowest recidivism rate in Europe (if not in the World). Yet we still believe that prison life should be as gard and traumatising as possible, while it is proven that once you go to prison you can never get your life fully on track.
Wait, you mean locking someone in an isolated cage for years with no one to socialize with but other criminals, no corrective action and no opportunity upon release doesn't work? Well, according to Republicans we just need to lock them up longer and for dumber stuff.
Load More Replies..."Toughest prison in Sweden" is better than half the apartments here.
Yes, but the test is that the whole room is a flat pack so they have to put it all together by themselves
Load More Replies...Sweden has one of the lowest numbers of inmates per population in the Western world. Having a less punitive system reduces crime rates but countries with tough sentencing laws have high levels of inmates per population (looking at you 'Murica), why is this so hard to grasp?
That's because they have amongst lowest inequality. Crime is caused by inequality and psychological issues. Saudi also has a low crime rate but that is because their punishments are so brutal that no-one would dare.
Load More Replies...not compared to 95% of the prisons in the rest of the world. Free education, medical, dental, mental health, trades training, freedom of religion, television, computer access, libraries, Honor dorms, visitation, free meals, commissaries, barber shops, social clubs, sports, laundry facilities.... need i go on? compare this to any third world prison, most other European prisons and prisons pretty much on any other continent, The worst thing about American prisons are the prisoners. In large part, They are what makes our prisons horrendous. What they do to one other.
Load More Replies...I am sure many prisoners are begging to be taken to solitary confinement.
You don't know how the rest of the prison looks yet
Load More Replies...the US does solitary confinement completely wrong. They have down studies that show the debilitating effects on the psyche from being confined in total isolation. Some people can not be reformed, but making them WORSE is not the answer either.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky — 'A society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens but by how it treats its criminals.' I don't think the USA will ever understand this ....... Also, a fun fact here ; Sweden has a reoffending rate of around 40%, high, yes, but when you compare that to the USA (75%) and the UK (70%), coupled with the fact that in Sweden their prison population is actually DROPPING whilst the UK and US are going UP, you really do have to question who's system is the right one ...
I didn't think solitary confinement prisoners were allowed to have sunlight. Or nice things. Ya know, maybe America needs revamp it's prisons. Focus more on rehabilitation instead of punishment. Maybe then we wouldn't have so many re-offenders. Granted, there is no hope for some people. Some people really are just evil.
Reform is the point; the lack of freedom is the punishment, not the terrible living conditions.
Load More Replies...Yes and their criminals don't come our as total psychopathic wanna be gangbangers either.
Criminals are people too. Far from all crime is commited by irredeemable psychopaths, admitting a failure of the system in those cases is a virtue, not a weakness. Crime begets crime. Mistreating people is a crime.
Makes you hate our "tough on crime" mentality and wish for reformation as opposed to making it as horrible as possible.
Commit a nonviolent crime (preferably directed at a faceless corporation) in home country to procure funds, leave no trace. Use proceeds to purchase ticket to Sweden. Use the time on the flight to brush up on Swedish criminal law to decide on which suitable punishable nonviolent offence you feel suits you best. Perhaps starting with one that typically is a shorter sentence as a trial run. Followed up by another crime if your stay is to your liking.
Load More Replies...If prisons are not for profit businesses...if prisons treated people like people to show them what life can be...
Read 'The Little Old Lady that Broke All the Rules' it's about a gang of Swedish pensioners that commit a crime because jail is better than their retirement home. Hysterical
If that's a prison, imagine what their nursing homes are like! A five star hotel?
The generation of snowflake kids would find the first thing to complain about in this room if 'locked' inside. Aren't they (inmates) free to work outside the prison as well?
That's larger than 2-person cells in the US, where there are no windows in solitary confinement.
Its documented on world.s toughest prisons, there is one in Iceland that is more like a hotel

watch "Where Shall We Invade Next". We could learn a lot about rehabilitating prisoners from these guys.
And what if you are sentence for a minor crime? I wonder what the prisons look like for that?
part of the punishment is making the prisoner build the furniture from ikea kits
No, that's a normal cell. A solitary cell is completely stripped off, with only a matress om THE floor.
you don't know that. Just like you don't know how the majority of prisoners are actually treated in America. It is quite respectfully and well.

It’s kind of made up. Of course we feed visitors - someone had a bad experience with a weirdo that happened to be a swede and it spiralled from there; combined with our habit of usually checking with parents before feeding their kids when they’re over, people went off their rockers and assumed Swedes starves all guests at all times, sometimes for weeks. It’s not quite true.
