Instagram Page Shares 50 Interesting And Lesser-Known Pictures From Our History
Today, you have your seat ready on a train to the past, with some of the most touching, beautiful and intriguing moments of history. Call it modern-day time travel, since these days, most of us barely have time to sit back, relax and dwell on the wonders of human history.
But thanks to this Instagram account titled A Slice Of History, which is basically a visual collection of selected historical ‘slices’, we have a whole lot to uncover. Think of Michelle and Barack Obama giggling on their wedding day in 1992, or Freddie Mercury lovingly hugging Mary Austin, and a couple of male lovers captured on camera in a photobooth in 1953; there’s something eternally beautiful about these moments.
Bored Panda also reached out to the creator behind this entertaining Instagram account to find out more about the idea behind it and what messages it spreads on social media. Scroll down for the interview below!

To find out more about A Slice Of History, we reached out to the creator behind it named Sarah, a 22-year-old from Sydney. “I absolutely adore film, fashion and culture,” Sarah said, adding that she works as a production coordinator making TVCs (television commercials) and advertisements “with an incredible production team.” On top of that, Sarah is a full-time university student studying a Bachelor of Media and Communications, and a Bachelor of Arts, so it seems like no day is dull for the creator of A Slice Of History.

Sarah started this Instagram page which today has 145k followers back in 2018, “while procrastinating during a uni lecture (not very studious of me, I know). I was scrolling aimlessly through the explore page and with nothing really engaging me in any way.” The creator said that she realized “how such a ‘stimulating’ app lacked real, diverse and educational content, and thus wanting to learn more myself and have the ability to share my knowledge with others, I started a A Slice Of History.”

The encounter took place at a Pride event in Brussels, where a curious kid asked if he could touch the punk’s jacket to see if the spikes were as sharp as they looked. The punker knelt down, amused by the kid’s reaction, and they engaged in conversation before returning to the parade.
When it comes to the content that gets shared on A Slice Of History, Sarah doesn’t plan her posts too much ahead of time. “Generally I’ll go about my day and something will inspire and intrigue my research. Whether it’s an outfit, a poster, book, something said on the radio, or in a conversation, I’ll quickly jot down the idea in my notebook and later begin researching,” she told us in a written interview.
Sarah also said that she tries to do her best “to ensure the posts are primarily without prejudice or bias, and the information constituting the posts are peer-reviewed, certified or supported in academic findings/claims in order to ensure authentic and valid information is shared online.”

When asked about the idea behind her Instagram page, Sarah said: “with our secular society so absorbed and engaged on social media, I thought this modern tool truly had the potential to share old stories, different cultures, spectacular fashion moments, the marvels of filmmaking, and, of course, history; the good and the bad, on a scale that I could never reach alone.”
But making your content stand out from others on social media is a challenge in itself. “It can definitely be challenging in the sense where in order to stand out, you need to think outside the box and really delve deep into research,” the Sydney-based creator said.

Freddie Mercury And Mary Austin
“All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary, but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary and I don't want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage.... We believe in each other, that's enough for me.” - Freddie
. “When he died I felt we'd had a marriage. We'd lived our vows. We'd done it for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health...I lost somebody who I thought was my eternal love.” - Mary
A Little Boy Hugging His Best Friend During Lunchtime
Not long after this photo was taken children of Japanese ancestry (including the pictures boy) were imprisoned with their parents spending the rest of the WWII in internment camps | Raphael Weill public school. San Fransisco, 1942
The boy on the left is incredibly photogenic with those eyes and that hair!
DANG i thought AWWWWWW until i read below , so sad , we're awful to each other
America doesn't like to talk about their short comings. George Takei did a one person play about his experience in the internment camps.
I hope they found each other, and were able to resume their friendship after that internment b******t was over (never should’ve happened in the first damn place, but we can’t—-and shouldn’t—-rewrite history, even if we finally have working time machines, because then we won’t learn from our mistakes). I love reunion stories of parted friends, relatives, and loves. They were ahead of their time in their friendship, I just hope it (and they) survived.
One of America's shame, that and putting toddlers in a cage after being taken from their parents.
And now idiots are targeting Russian immigrants, vandalizing Russian restaurants, cars that spot Russian flags stickers on their plates, symphonies are banning Russian composers, Russian artists are canceled, because, apparently, just by being Russian=agreeing with Putin! There are 2 million Russians trying to escape Russia because they don't support what's happening, yet out here, people still cannot make the difference between background and political affiliation.

President Roosevelt. He was the one that gave the order so technically it was his fault, though I'm sure there were pressures from many others.
Load More Replies...Okay hate on me; because I know you're going to. But what would any other country have done at the time? An I mean the time during WW II not yesterday. But a time when spys at Pearl Harbor were pretending to be Japanese tourist taking photos to give Intel to the Japanese military. Also just so it's known 1,862 died while in those camps, and that's from "All causes." How many died in German camps? How many died in Russian camps? How many died in Japanese camps? Huh How many!?
You sound strong enough to handle hate, like so many U..S. Japanese American citizens who were collected with short notice because of their race and our fears, put in guarded race horse stables and then sealed communities with armed guards all located in unfriendly places, these same Americans who lost homes, farms and businesses they spent a lifetime acquiring and yet had the courage to joined the military, the same military who kept them caged with armed guard towers, to fight the enemies of the land they called home, that home being the United States of America.
Load More Replies...your skin color isn't contagious and can't kill me
Load More Replies..."However, what I’ve found is that social media can be quite segregated, only showing content from certain countries and cultures. Whereas with A Slice Of History I try to incorporate an amalgamation of posts from across the world, getting insight from individuals to research and discuss, with different perspectives and opinions driving it,” Sarah explained.

Concentration Camps Liberated By Allied Forces
I could be wrong but the military weren't allowed to give all their food to the prisoners, even though they were starving. If they ate too much too fast and richer and heartier food, they'd get severely sick, losing a portion of the fluid in their bodies to the point of death. I may be wrong about it, I saw it on an episode of band of brothers

“What I love most about the page is that people genuinely love the content and it instigates their own individual research and knowledge, Sarah said and added that she has been able to meet many incredible people through her Instagram page. “And that in itself has probably been the most rewarding part,” the creator of A Slice Of History concluded.

A Couple 48 Hours After They Met At Woodstock, And 50 Years, Two Sons And Five Grandchildren Later
Judy had met Jerry on Aug. 15, 1969 which was day one of the iconic Woodstock music festival, when her car broke down on New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge, roughly 90 miles from the concert grounds, and she and the two acquaintances she was traveling with decided to hitchhike.
She revealed in an interview with PEOPLE, “I was just thinking, ‘Damn, now we can’t go,’ and we were dying to,” recalls Judy, 71. “Then Jerry and his friends pulled up. I stuck my head in and I saw that there was a woman in the car. I’d never hitchhiked before, but I figured, ‘Well, since there was a woman, it was fairly safe, and I probably should just get in the car.’ That first ride together in the back seat of Jerry’s pal’s 1967 VW Beetle eventually grew into 50 years of love and marriage, including two sons and five grandchildren.”

An Extremely Sad And Distressing Photograph Of Amy Winehouse At Her Last Concert Ever In Belgrade | Serbia, 2011
This is very distressing. The poor woman was hounded by the press and her father was (is) a pig - chasing after her even when she wanted some privacy - for money and exposure. He should be locked up. And here's another example of a human being harassed by the paparazzi. Shame on them.

Russian explorer Leonid Rogozov was in the middle of Antartica when he realised he had appendicitis and needed an appendectomy straight away. Being the only medic on sight and his appendix hours away from bursting and thus spreading a bacterial infection, he decided he would operate on himself. It's so hard to believe this was ever a thing. If it weren't for the awful neon sign and knowing what they had to endure simply because their skin was a darker color, this would be a beautiful picture. Instead it just makes me sad and embarrassed that we ever treated other human beings like that.
