With the rise of photo editing software and the increasing importance of our image on social media, most of us sometimes get worried about what people think of us. Do I look good enough? Do I dress stylish enough? What do people think of me when they see my picture? Would I get more likes/upvotes/notes/tiny red digital hearts if I did X, Y, and Z?
Unfortunately, some people have these thoughts far too often and take them to extremes: they care about their body image so damn much that they start relying on photo manipulation to extreme levels. This results in people looking radically different online than they do in real life. And when you do a side by side comparison? Wow. The difference is striking, often hilarious, and might make some of us wish you were born before they invented electricity.

There are more people who Photoshop their pictures than most of us think. Of course, most of these edits and photo filters aren’t as drastic as the ones shown in this list, but it still raises the question of how widespread this is.
According to one study, two thirds of Australian women believe that it’s wrong for magazines to edit photos before printing them. The irony is that 57 percent of them also admitted to Photoshopping their own pictures before posting them on social media.

I once saw Angelina Jolie on TV. She had just returned from Turkey, where she was visiting Syrian refugee children to draw media attention to their plight. She was wearing a simple outfit of a black blouse and pants, and had no makeup on. I thought she had never looked more beautiful. She is a very beautiful woman, but helping others brought out more of her inner beauty.

These look like they could be completely feasible. The one on the left looks like a professionally done photo with hair and makeup and probably some filters, the one on the right looks like a candid photo of her doing something she enjoys with no makeup.

Yeah a lot of these are comparing a bare faced, usually an unflattering angle with a shot that has the makeup and hair done and is shot from a better angle. Not everything is photoshop!

I may be wrong here, but I believe this is a model who purposely takes photo's as wanted for her job, and then photos that are unedited in the same situation that shows how she really is. One goes into production, and of course she gets rights to it (without all the advertising stuff added) and has repeatedly posted herself in both lights. I can support this, camera angle and careful editing works wonders, but she also shows herself as is.

Did you see her left leg? I’m a photographer and can attest that angles, lighting, posing, etc. can change the way a person looks, however, not to this degree. I don’t know how I could take this shot (lighting, positioning of the model, bone lengthening surgery...) and manage to make her left thigh look like that.

not to point out the obvious, but generally the quality of the original photo goes DOWN, not gets better after being modified. Are you certain that the one on the left was not the copy, with the model edited out? even the angles are incorrect, so likely this is two separate images entirely, not one being modified.

Photos on Instagram and other social platforms have lead people to believe that beauty can only exist in an unachievable body type; that it’s even remotely healthy to look like the models in the photos we see. It's very saddening that it teaches women and young girls that it’s appropriate to try to hide their flaws at all costs instead of embracing them. :(

I feel sorry for them, and for the society in general. They wouldn't do that if they didn't feel like they had to

Exactly, I think people often forget what is causing people - especially young girls - to want to do this. Making fun of individuals who do this isn't going to solve anything, we need to work on the bigger picture

Apparently people on bored panda think there's a lot wrong, if you see them making fun of the unedited pictures where the people actually look like a human

I really wonder what is going on in their head when they 'shop themselves into oblivion. On some level I feel sorry for them, because they must have serious mental issues. But on the other hand they are a-holes promoting a toxic culture to a wide and often very impressionable audience.

It all boils down to our obsession with beauty and what we feel beautiful should look like. It's sad really. I'm just as guilty to hop on snapchat and throw on a filter.

Some of these filters are ridiculously fake looking, do these people actually think they make them look sexy? Also, level of denial of when some of these 'influencers' get called out is ridiculous.
