Pharmacies are a vital part of the healthcare system. They help local communities answer health-related questions and keep them in the best shape possible. However, it’s not just about medicine and prescriptions but also the people and the quality customer service they receive.  Unfortunately, not all visits to the pharmacy are pleasant, and these instances down below are the proof. Scroll away to find times people left the drugstore frustrated and don’t forget to share your own experiences in the comments below.

Ages ago Germany had a fun ad for condoms. A young guy nervously at the till, trying to hide the condoms he's buying under the rest of his shopping. Lady at the till tries to scan them, giving him a understanding wink. Condom doesn't scan, so she shouts through the whole shop "BERTA, (Berta being an old-fashioned German first name), WHAT'S THE PRICE FOR THE CONDOMS?" Guy almost dies and pretty girl and the next till makes some encouraging comment. it was meant to show that condoms were nothing to be ashamed of. Was pretty nice and got people talking about condoms. Well done!

As of 2024, there were 46,230 pharmacies and drugstore businesses in the US employing more than 340,000 specialists. Upon entering the profession, pharmacists have to swear on an oath to “assure optimal outcomes for all patients.”

However, as we see from the list, that is not always the case, and working conditions are making it almost impossible to stick to their promise.

The National Pharmacist Workforce Study (NPWS) in 2022 has found that more than 60% of chain pharmacists experienced high levels of work exhaustion, while 80% reported not being satisfied with their job.

This is happening because of the number of tasks they perform at work that go beyond their original job description. Staff shortage additionally contributes to this issue, making pharmacists overworked and overwhelmed.

Could be a judgement call from the pharmacist. There are a few reasons they could've done this but seems overkill to me. Basically, chemo d***s are very very bad for someone not needing to take them. Even touching them ungloved can cause negative effects. A blister pack would be a better way to keep them separated & sealed. But blisters aren't childproof and just one of these could kill a kid. The flip side is that given the purpose of chemo, there may come a point where the patient isn't able to handle this child-proof top and thus can't self-administer.

It would be correct in the Netherlands. Lots of pharmacies have an automatic distributor to serve clients outside of opening times. We are in a rural area with no emergency pharmacy anywhere near a 1h drive, so they invented a mechanism that can distribute medication remotely. No idea how it actually works, but it does.

Went To Take The Antibiotic Prescribed To Me At The ER, And They Accidentally Gave Me 25% Of The Wrong Antibiotic

Blue capsules and a prescription bottle on a table, representing challenges at local pharmacies.

I have a very bad jaw/throat infection, doctor sent me to ER because it's dangerous to have an infection in that area. Did all the ER stuff, get my prescriptions and head home. I am really careful with antibiotics because I have a very bad allergy to one of them. This one is an antibiotic that I am not allergic to, Clindamycin.
So, I read the little orange attachment to the label that describes what the pill looks like "Light blue, oblong shaped capsule printed with a C and a 40". The first pill on the top of the bottle is blue and oblong, but printed with something different. I google it quickly to make sure it's still the same antibiotic, and was surprised to see that it is a totally different antibiotic (Doxycycline) that is used to treat STDs (among other things!) This has never happened to me. I'm guessing I should just go back to the pharmacy and they can refill it?? So weird that manufacturers would make them look so similar.

Walgreens is basically an expensive, oversized 7/11, they're not a pharmacy in & of itself.

I get the point they're making, but neither of those statements are true. The primary difference between the two is that the night side contains an antihistamine (which causes drowsiness as a side effect), while the day side doesn't. There's no stimulant in the day side to "keep you awake".

This is in Australia. It is not true that the Consumer has no idea what they’ll be charged. You can always ask your pharmacist about the cost of the medication. We cant see the brands here but I suspect that one of these is generic and the other is branded. Chemist Warehouse will almost always sell the generic brand in the first instance. It's one of the reasons its so much cheaper, but you can you can always ask your pharmacist to supply you the generic brand.

How unrealistic! The pharmacy is run by HUMANS. Humans get sick, etc. (And some businesses have a hard time keep humans working for them cuz they're terrible employers.) But OP, you're right! When things go sideways and no other HUMAN is available to work on short notice, that establishment should call every possible client that might show up that day and inform them of this excruciating mishap. God forbid the customer not attempt to wait until the very last moment to fill their vitally required medication. The pharmacy is at fault for not warning everyone that HUMANS might have personal needs. /s 😮‍💨🙄

The fire sprinkler was there first. They make fire sprinkler extenders for this reason, which the fire inspector will likely talk to them about on the next visit.
