In the past, idyllic suburban neighborhoods were characterized by close relationships. Residents would rely on their neighbors for support, friendly chats, and even block gatherings. However, nowadays, neighborly friendliness is on the decline and a once strong sense of community is slowly being replaced by anonymity and frustration.

This is evident in many stories of neighborly antics that people share to vent their frustrations online. From using a shared hallway as storage to wrecking a car into a fellow resident’s home, scroll down to find the most unbelievable things these neighbors from the pits of H-E-double-hockey-sticks have pulled.

While you're at it, don't forget to check out a conversation with global community building expert, author, and founder and CEO of Kalliergo Community Building, Lori Gosselin, who kindly agreed to tell us why we're distancing ourselves from surrounding dwellers.

I Present To You, Lazy Neighbors. These Neighbors Are Only A Few Steps Away From The Trash Chute And Refuse To Dispose Of Their Trash Properly. They Just Leave Their Trash In The Hallway

This has been going on for months and has only gotten worse these past few weeks. The lovely cleaning ladies have begged me to help them find out who is taking advantage of them, and last night I took the liberty of putting on gloves, going through the trash, and finding mail addressed to them. I found out who the neighbor was and placed all the trash back on their porch. Call me a jerk, but multiple neighbors have placed notes asking them not to leave trash bags outside in the hallway.

Good work with the gloves. I'd dump the trash at their door, rubbing some of the mess on their door, leave the bag open, and make them have to either walk through it, or pick it up. Then give the cleaning crew extra money for the extra work. Repeat as necessary.

WTF is wrong with people? I was walking home from the bus stop one afternoon and this woman threw a fast food bag full of trash onto the sidewalk. I said loudly, "Oh, f*cking HELL no", and I picked it up and threw it back at her. I was quite satisfied to see the drink cup lid had come off and what was left was all over her shirt. They were half a block from a convenience store, with multiple garbage cans out front.

A myriad of data supports the fact that nearby residents aren’t as connected as they used to be. A 2024 Top Rail Fence survey shows that 65% of residents admit to hiding from their neighbors

Younger generations are even more guilty of doing this.

The most common ways people try to avoid surrounding dwellers are by pretending not to see them, staying inside when someone is outside, acting like they’re not home, wearing headphones or faking being on a call.

    A Non-Serious Discharge Of Debt

    A Non-Serious Discharge Of Debt

Can't explain how angry I am. Someone destroyed the grave of my cat. My cat Franz passed away after a neighbor kicked him in the stomach. He couldn’t recover from this.

Yesterday I found the grave of my dead cat destroyed in the backyard. I reached out to the Facebook group for my village. Today the mother of the 5-year-old kid who destroyed the grave called me. His son is guilty and wants to apologize. He said it was a mistake and wanted to give me money for the damage. The mother interrupted him and told him the truth. He and his 2 friends destroyed the grave and threw the wood into the small river. This was no mistake. I am really sad and angry someone destroyed the grave without any remorse. But it's a 5-year-old, I can't call the police for this. I just wish he told me the truth. I made this cross fully with my hands, handpainted it and wrote his name in old German letters. He doesn't deserve this.

To be fair, sounds like the mom is a good mom. Made her 5yo call and is teaching him about taking responsibility for his actions by actually calling and paying for it. AND she called him on not being honest about it. She's doing everything she can do. I still feel awful for OP though. Money and apologies can't replace what was lost.

The 5yo did NOT kill the cat, he destroyed the grave. At that age, he likely didn't understand the importance of it. His mother tried to get him to apologize and make amends. The cat was kicked by someone else entirely.

I'm glad someone's insurance is covering this. A drunk driver drove into my friend's house (thankfully, she and her husband were out of the country at the time, so they weren't hurt) and basically took out the entire front half of the house. The damage was estimated by a licensed contractor in excess of $100,000, and their insurance tried to make a payout of around $1500. It took my friend and her husband 18 MONTHS and a lawyer to get the insurance to pay the appropriate amount.

Downstairs Neighbor Came To My Door At Midnight After Throwing Rocks At My Window And Calling Me Names

Downstairs Neighbor Came To My Door At Midnight After Throwing Rocks At My Window And Calling Me Names

Yesterday night, at about 11, I heard what sounded like pebbles hitting my bedroom window, then a male voice screaming names. About 15 minutes later, I heard a knock on my door. I checked the Ring camera to find a guy I didn’t recognize standing there. He said he was my downstairs neighbor and told me to stop stomping so loud, it’s been six months of nonstop noise, and he’s “sick of it”. I moved in three months ago, not six, and I’ve never had a noise complaint in any of my previous apartments. Plus, my job means I’m gone for 12-14 hours a day. I don’t know what he’s hearing, but I don’t think it’s me. Even if it is, throwing pebbles and then coming to my door at midnight is a weird way to handle it. This whole situation is freaking me out.

According to Gosselin, one of the culprits of declining friendliness among neighbors might be the growing demands of our lives, like work and childcare, that leave little time for leisure.

She suggests that the disappearance of front porches might be another. "People used to occupy the front porch in the evening, greeting neighbors out for evening strolls or walking their dogs. But now we disappear onto the back deck, seeking solitude, choosing introversion over extroversion."

Good luck with that. Most tow places only do tows for contracts or broken down vehicles. They come to tow that car, they are going to ask you to pay for the tow.

The rest of the condo is destroyed from water, fire, and smoke damage, including all of our belongings and the new Xbox Series X I just bought and saved up for. Suing is only effective if the person being sued has money. I tried to sue my neighbor for the scarring left on my face after I rescued her from her own dog that had murderd her other dog. Lost wages, therapy and obvious medical bills were not recoverable because she didn't have renter's insurance, her landlord wasn't liable (claimed he didn't know there was a dangerous breed living there) and my lawyer said we could get a judgement against them, but it would take forever at the earliest. Sucks.

Yup. Seen a lot of property fires as a former restoration tech. Most of them are either someone falling asleep with a lit cigarette, electrical, or oil fires. Make sure you have renters insurance from a good company. Don't go for the cheap $20-30k coverage packages as they will fight you every single step of the way to avoid paying you. Desjardins would make us measure every single article of clothing, get every serial number from each individual piece of Tupperware, and even look up the ISBN of every book claimed. They would make sure that our company took $25,000 of your coverage in fees, then cut you a check for $5k. Go with a good company like State Farm and start at $50k coverage for about $30/month. They moved heaven and earth for their clients, sent us back to help seniors unpack (at a cost to their company), or once inspected, just cut you a check for your coverage, minus deductible.

Estrangement from neighbors can also result in safety and security infringements. "When you know your neighbors, there is a sense of safety and security," explains Gosselin.

"In my childhood neighborhood, parents parented all the kids on our streets. We knew everyone, and many years later, though most of us have moved away, we see one another at funerals as our parents passed on," she fondly recalls.

It's called pollarding. *Pollarding is a tree pruning technique that involves cutting away the upper branches of a tree, which can help keep the tree healthy and safe. It's often done in the winter or spring to reduce the risk of stress or damage to the tree. *

Pollarding. Stops the canopy of the tree getting too big. Difficult to tell what species they are, but Salix, Prunus, Tilea all respond well to that treatment. See most of rural France for reference. Maybe a break of a year would be ok, but the trees look ok to me

This is a cut to make the trees fuller and uniform. I can't remember what it's called but is a landscaping trend. Our neighbor(landscapers) do this. The trees are always beautiful

It's called "topping," and the trees will probably die. If they are city property, those people could be prosecuted for destruction of city or state property. I think those idiots should be topped!

... if you're not gonna allow them leaves, why do you plant trees in the first place? Appears like ... dunno, but I've known someone who adopted two cats, and rehomed them when they first made a scratch in a wallpaper. Because "I don't want my home to be wrecked". Neighbor Throws Dog Food At My Car Cause I'm Parked In Front Of Her Window

It happened twice this week, we live in a building and this woman who lives at the bottom floor throws dog food on my car because I'm parked in front of her window.

She doesn't even have a car.

As someone without a vehicle, I had a similar thought. I don't use my spot for my own vehicle, but I have friends who help me get to the grocery store, medical appointments, even occasionally take my kid to school when the weather's nasty. Fortunately, my neighbor's all know this and leave my spot open, but I'd be pretty pissed if someone just took it! (Although I wouldn't commit vandalism. I'd just report it to the property manager and have himself take care of it. He's good about stuff like that.)

I know a lot of eldern or disabled people who really hate a car parked infront of their window. It is often the only view they see. They rarely leave their livingroom unless they are gonna go to bed or are out for a walk. Yeah they suck for leaving dog food on your car. But also OP's reasoning sucks. Just because they don't have a car, doesn't mean it's not a problem. Are there maybe other placed you can park that are nearby and doesn't block views? Just to be clear. Neighbour is definitely in the wrong. Just an open conversation about it could have solved it.

I Asked The Neighbor If He Could Have His Daughter Leave Room On The Sidewalk For My Mom’s Wheelchair And My Kids. This Was His Response

So my neighbors' college-aged daughter always parks over the sidewalk causing all the neighborhood kids and walkers to go into the street to get around her SUV (it’s a pretty busy street as it feeds into the rest of the neighborhood). I’ve asked her once and her response was let me ask my parents, but nothing happened. Fast forward about 9 months. My mom who uses a wheelchair (due to advanced MS) is coming to visit so I asked the neighbor if he could possibly have his daughter park in a way that didn’t cover the sidewalk, while she was here visiting. This pic shows his response. Also, as you can see there is plenty of parking not only in the street but in their own driveway!

There's a lot of people in my hometown who block the sidewalks, even though they have driveways. When i asked them to move their cars, their response was: "There's sidewalk on the other side. " Yeah, and there's sidewalk on their side, too. Sidewalk is right next their houses, and driveways are closer to the road. But they park cars right next to wall of their houses, blocking sidewalk.

But not all residents are completely against fostering neighborhood interactions. Nextdoor, partnered with The Harris Poll, found that 71% of adults would like to meet more people in their neighborhood, while 50% say they wish they had a closer relationship with surrounding dwellers. Despite having such aspirations, 47% of grownups admit that it’s difficult to make new connections.

Pull the hose through as far as you can - really tight, Then cut it off. it will contract back into his place and won't reach your fence in future. Repeat this every time he replaces the hose. An alternative is to get large amounts of red-coloured dye and pump it back up the hose into his pool.

Gosselin doesn't find it the least bit surprising that many adults struggle with making connections with surrounding dwellers.

"This would require what would amount to a herculean effort, but most of us do not have time or energy for this. After work, picking up the children from daycare, or greeting them at home after school, getting supper ready, dealing with homework and a little time before bed, when do parents have time to go out and build community with their neighbors?"

However, there are things that we can do. "We can plan neighborhood game nights, movie nights, festivals, and barbecues. We can take many pages out of small-town community-building pursuits, say, for instance, in the TV series, Gilmore Girls. There is a reason we watch shows like this. Neighbor Left Their Mark On The New Road

Neighbor Left Their Mark On The New Road

This neighbor appears to have gone around the barrier because their need to get home (and, apparently, leave again) was more important than everyone else on the street who has to see this every day going forward.

Neighbors Pile Their Trash Up In Front Of The Empty Dumpster

It’s mildly infuriating that I have to step over all of that nasty trash to be able to reach the dumpster to throw my garbage away. Usually, I end up just walking to a different dumpster, seems to be just my immediate neighbors who are incapable of actually putting their trash IN the dumpster.

I live in a complex with a few older people. The dumpsters used to have sliding doors on the sides, but don't anymore. Some of those older folks can't heave their trash bags up over their heads to get them in the bin. The good news is the super comes by a few times a day and puts anything left next to the dumpster into it properly.

If the continue to do stuff like this speak with the landlord.

I don't know any place in the US where this is even legal. If the OP has to leave for any emergency and can't, the neighbor is liable and the police know it. I used to have the drunks from across the street park in front of my driveway all the time and there was no way to go around them. Called the cops who had them towed, rinse and repeat. It got so the cops didn't even bother to ask me to go to the house anymore and make the owners move their cars. They didn't either. The just arrived, took one look, and called the tow company. Twenty-one tows and the neighbors finally got the message.

The Front Door Of My Apartment Has Been Egged With Hard-Boiled Eggs 3 Times This Month. No Idea Who Is Doing It Or Why

I spend most of my time at my girlfriend's house, so most days I am only at my house for a few hours at most. The eggs always get thrown when I am home and during the day but I've never seen it happen so I'm not even sure who is doing it. The 1st time it happened I thought my neighbor just dropped them, but there have been marks from the yolks on my door the last 2 times.

I try my best to be quiet when I'm home because my downstairs neighbor has a young child. I've only lived here 2 months and I've never even spoken to any of my neighbors so I don't understand why this is happening.

My only consolation is that they are considerate enough to only use hard-boiled eggs.

I'd be pushing a pram/stroller down the sidewalk and banging it into the car. Take pictures of where the car is beforehand, and show it to whoever the neighbor complains to about dents. Car might even be ticketed for blocking sidewalk. Towed would be great, because not only is it blocking the sidewalk, it is going out into the street also.

I got ticketed once for blocking the sidewalk (I was young and didn't yet know I could be ticketed for that, since technically I was also in my own driveway; just not all the way in, and I was blocking the sidewalk. Lesson learned.)

How Do You Stop Trucks From Driving Over This Corner?

How Do You Stop Trucks From Driving Over This Corner?

New construction in the neighborhood. My house is on a cul de sac and trucks cut the corner and drive on my lawn all the time. I have debated getting boulders but they’re really expensive in my area. Also considering some 6x6 posts. One of the issues is the main water line runs along the road (blue line in the picture) and I have a utility easement 10’ from the road. Looking for ideas of what I could potentially do. I was thinking maybe I could argue to the county that the builder is risking potentially damaging the main line from the weight of the trucks driving on it?

Get a big damn rock and put it on the corner. Big enough to damage a trailer. This is a common technique. We used it at my work years ago because truckers would cut the corner short and end up getting hung up on cars that were parked. Big damn rock solved the problem.

At my elementary school there was an issue with people driving over the newly planted trees. The school hammered down steel posts, about 3 ft down and left the nubs sticking up about 12 inches. The next time someone did it it ripped off their oil pan. The issue stopped.

My Neighbor Sprayed Herbicide On My Back Lot To Make Himself A Parking Spot

My Neighbor Sprayed Herbicide On My Back Lot To Make Himself A Parking Spot

Sheriff says that in our county you’re allowed to park on the outer 8 feet of someone else’s lawn for a day or two without their permission because it’s considered the shoulder. Come back to the same spot as many times as you want, just don’t be there continuously. You probably don’t have the right to damage someone else’s vegetation but I can’t prove it was him.

When I was young. (late teens, early twenties), my partner and I moved into a property that had clearly been used by loads of people because there were 10(ish) mattresses. With youthful wisdom we decided the easist way to get rid of them was to leave them outside of a charity shop that was few doors down. Feeling a guilty I heard a woman complain that someone had left three mattresses outside the shop. Three? Who had nicked the other seven??

Either that or a large, beat up truck to squeeze past them. I lived on a horse boarding stable with a large gate across the front that was shut and locked at night. I was working a late shift and had to work the early shift the next morning. I came home to find a car parked right in front of the gate. I was able to get the gate open, but couldn't get my truck past the car without doing a lot of damage. I honked my horn, yelled, and got no response. So....my truck being a 15 year old wreck with so many dings and dents you couldn't count them, I scraped by the car. I'm sure I did incredible damage to the side of the car (couldn't tell anything happened to my truck) but at least I got some sleep that night. Best of all, these people had parked right in front of a huge sign on the gate that said "NO PARKING".

If for whatever reason you can't get them to move the vehicles then of course first call should be the cops, then a towing company, and lastly, if you've got a big pickup, (preferably 4 wheel drive), maybe just "accidentally", back right into the side of the car blocking your driveway, making sure to take plenty of pictures toi show where they were parked and any records you have of calling them asking them to move the cars.

Neighbor hit the gas while texting instead of the brake and totaled my parked 2012 VW CC with her 2019 Chevy Silverado Z71 while also causing property damage to my fence. And she thought it was funny and laughed at the whole situation. This was the first car I bought through a dealership and legitimately instead of buying from a friend and under the table. Now it’s gone. But better the whip on a truck instead of me in an ambulance.

Aside from the misogyny, UKGrandad, you obviously haven't had the experience of noisy upstairs neighbors. It's infuriating and messes with your mental health and happiness.

Neighbor Passed Out While Driving Down Culdesac

Paramedics said he passed out. Had to have been going 45-50 mph. Had no insurance.

He would’ve slammed right into one of the front bedrooms if my car hadn’t been there.

No dude, that's the tub not a roof or structure built over the tub. That brown thing on top is a pool cover. The white bit you can see on the right is the edge of tub. It absolutely is overlooking their yard (overlooking is 1 word, btw, not 2).

Could she be doing some serious clean up and intending to get the trash taken away during the weekend? Perhaps she cleaned out her depression-apartment and needed the trash out asap so she could see results faster? It still would be nice of her to inform the neighbours. I could also be super naïve about this. I probably am. But at least the trash is in bags?

I only see trees on your property. Imho you should have taken care of those leaves way earlier but clearly you didn't. The landscaper did you a favour by piling the leaves up so you can remove them easily.

You can't even see the other property so how the hell do you know if there's trees there?? I'm going to guess this neighbor isn't the only person in the neighborhood without a single tree on their property and most people aren't stupid enough to think that the neighbor should be responsible for moving all their leaves if the neighbor is living in a treeless yard..... Some of you people just need to type things just to make yourself feel special huh stupidity all around

We have a huge oak in our yard. The leaves make it to several yards around us. On the other hand our yard gets maple leaves, we don't have a maple tree, black walnuts, we don't have one of those either. It's nature, things blow. Are you really thinking that your neighbors should rake up all the leaves in your yard because they may have come from their tree? Nuts.
