Influencers Are Falling Ill After Mistaking Toxic Waste Dump For Gorgeous Blue Lake
It’s Darwin Awards time again! This edition comes from the beautiful region of Galicia in the northwest of Spain, where the Instagram generation have recently discovered a spectacular azure lake; one that makes a perfect background for showing off their figure.

Beautiful, isn’t it? There’s just one problem. The ‘lake’ is actually a disused tungsten mine, and the vivid colors actually signify chemical contamination.

This hasn’t stopped some people entering the water, however, leading to hospitalizations for skin rashes and stomach problems.
One influencer who entered the toxic water suffered an allergic reaction for two weeks, telling a local newspaper that things were “a little bad, yes, but the photo was worth it.”

The site, known as Monte Neme, was originally mined during World War 2 and has been left abandoned for decades. People’s renewed interest was piqued by some irresponsible promotion by the region’s tourism board.
“This is a mining landscape, which is devastated and unrestored but Galicia used it to promote tourism in the region as if it were an idyllic landscape,” Ramón Varela, environmental journalist and spokesperson for Salvemos Cabana, an association for the protection of natural and cultural heritage in the area, told Euronews.

“At the weekend, it’s a kind of pilgrimage and it’s a dangerous place because it’s a landscape caused by industrial liquids,” says Varela. “On the one hand, it is an area that’s easy to access and, on the other, the slopes are risky, reaching heights up to 30 meters.”

Salvemos Cabana is now lobbying the regional government to limit access to the lake, and provide clearer warnings of the dangers of the area.

Dr. Manuel Ferreiro, from the emergency department of the University Hospital of Coruña, explained in an interview with Cadena Cope that while a short dip will leave bathers with minor skin irritations, longer exposure can lead to more serious problems.
“If they take a bath in a timely manner, the most likely consequences are ocular and irritative problems, irritation of the ocular mucous membranes and skin irritations,” he said.

“If it is a prolonged bathing session and they accidentally drink some water, people can experience digestive disorders, vomiting and later diarrhea.”

Of course, it’s not the first and certainly won’t be the last time that people have foolishly risked their health and lives for the perfect snap. People in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk have also recently been falling ill after taking dips in a bright blue lake that is actually the toxic dumping ground for a nearby power plant.

However, the Instagrammers are not the only ones at fault. There are not enough signs warning about the dangers of the are and those that are there have no specific information on the water contamination levels.

Frankly, the first picture. Pseudo-yoga pose, half-exposed butt. I do not mind nakedness, I do not mind posing, hell, I do not mind people who do superfluous stuff to bath in what they consider reach. But the carelessness pisses me of. With reach comes responsibility. I would rather see a scraggy-bearded environmentalist racing for the renatualisation of the environmental crime this lake is.

Well if it were me and I had ignorantly stumbled across this “idyllic” looking place by accident, my first reaction would be to start asking myself why there is no one else here on such a beautiful day, and why is there virtually no plant life around this lake?

The story itself states that the location was used for tourism promotion, and they admitted that there wasn't nearly enough signage around the lake. Many mining areas all around the world are contaminated by heavy metals and other toxic compounds leaking from spoil piles or from areas contaminated by ore processing. It's an unfortunate reality of mining. Especially during wartime, the environment was the least of people's concerns.

That site really needs far better warnings and should have barriers to entry. Not sure the consequences in these situations really count as Darwinism in action. As we typically refer to it, that's what happens when people who really know better, do stupid things anyway. In most of these instances, the consequences are the result of ignorance... not stupidity. Most 1st world people work around their world with the notion that their governments protect them and make it safe to walk around in. Clearly not in every instance. I suppose "universal/free healthcare" makes up for that. Although, it seems that would be a small comfort knowing your government's actions (or lack thereof) resulted in health problems that became chronic, life threatening, or terminal.

Sorry Leo but as you said, it's about ignorance not just stupidity. I don't think more signs would help here. People would go there anyway. Just look at Chernobyl. Besides, a lake of such unnatural colour should be enough warning. I think there is no one to blame but those morons themselves.

It's true, but things don't always work as they should. People are supposed to use their brains to think and analyse. The landscape looks toxic, only an idiot can think it's "idillic"; the colour of the water looks unnatural and there is no vegetation in the area. The land is completely barren, which should have given her a clue of the toxicity of the water. If in doubt, she should have asked the locals.

I don't even understand this whole thing about "influencers." I mean -- who cares? Why do people get so hung up on these "beautiful" (on the outside) people who, for the most part, have very little inner substance? Why are we giving them so much attention? I actually feel so sorry for them because they desire love and affection so much they think this is the way to get it. (And maybe it's the only way they can, or think so, anyway.) We have a world that is so interconnected, and yet so many people are lonely and desperate for whatever kind of love they can get that they're willing to do the most inane things to get it. What this world needs instead of these so-called "influencers" is lessons in how to make genuine, true friendships and to be compassionate, caring, helpful people. (What the world *really* needs is the love of Christ, but they don't know it, and I expect that part of my comment will get more than a few eye rolls.) Influence your world by being a caring person.

Well, as a Spaniard I'd like to clarify that the first sign states for "no trespassing". Also, as someone has mentioned, that isn't a natural color anyway. But first things first: Here we are grown ups. We don't need fences or security guards telling us a thousand times not to do something dangerous. If you do so, then it's only your fault.

There are similar intense blue lakes in Australia near old gold mines on the Nullarbor Plain for instance. If I remember they were contaminated with cyanide in the extraction process. In other places they use mercury.

I never thought I would ever say that but: I don't blame the influencers. They should have informed themselves more, yes but they saw others taking pictures there (even bathing in it) what would indicate that it's safe. these signs aren't enough when there is not even a small fence. And they actually extolled that to get more tourists there, that's just careless!

There is a whole group of egocentric rich people who think that they can just go wherever they want with a camera crew and take pictures of themselves just so people and see what a fake life they have. There's a bit if everything, and you can also find very interesting stuff. I follow some wonderful photographers, artists, ecologists, a couple of animal shelters, a 12-year-old girl who is fighting to get clean water for her city, some people who show interesting and off-the-beaten-track places... Instagram is just a tool, and a mirror of society. The good stuff is hidden, but it's there.

I never thought I would ever say that but: I don't blame the influencers. They should have informed themselves more, yes but they saw others taking pictures there (even bathing in it) what would indicate that it's safe. these signs aren't enough when there is not even a small fence. And they actually extolled that to get more tourists there, that's just careless!

Who does an "influencer" think they are influencing, and what is it they "think" they are influencing them to do? Oh ya, I forgot, "influencer" really means narcissistic, vain person who thinks posting selfies online and writing a blog is a "way of life"/"career/means of "influencing" people. Please grow up and get real jobs that actually contribute to society in a meaningful way!

I refuse to use Instagram simply because it's full of this kind of b******t. There is a whole group of egocentric rich people who think that they can just go wherever they want with a camera crew and take pictures of themselves just so people and see what a fake life they have. If there was a site of people who take pictures of rescue animals like this, then sign me up!

There's a bit if everything, and you can also find very interesting stuff. I follow some wonderful photographers, artists, ecologists, a couple of animal shelters, a 12-year-old girl who is fighting to get clean water for her city, some people who show interesting and off-the-beaten-track places... Instagram is just a tool, and a mirror of society. The good stuff is hidden, but it's there.

Hate on [Edit: the profession of] influencers all you like, but this is terrible and it's terrible that people are revelling in this. Think about the kind of person you are when you derive joy from the suffering of another person who has done you no wrong and, most likely, has harmed absolutely no one.

Nobody harmed her; she did it herself. And she has learnt nothing out of this experience, because her conclusion is that it was worth it. She is harming lots of young people by teaching them to be like a flock of sheep, and she gets money in the process. I don't hate her; I despise her. And I don't "revel in this", but I'm not sorry for her either. It's time adults started to realise actions have consequences. She could have learnt something out of this experience, but she chose to continue behaving like an entitled idiot.

@Lolipopunicorn, all of these “listicle” news sites like BoredPanda or Buzzfeed seem to trend a lot of the same viral material. It’s pure “click-bait”, but it generates site traffic. I’m sick of Influencer articles, but still enjoy BoredPanda for its arts and cultures post.
