People Are Saying India’s Idea Of 4-Day Work Week Is ‘Rubbish’ As They Expect People To Work 12 Hours Per Day
In 2019, Microsoft Japan shifted to a 4-day work week and noticed a 40% increase in productivity. In 2020, Unilever New Zealand started a year-long experiment on whether a four-day work week should be extended to its 155,000 employees across the globe as well.
Now, India is considering the same. Kinda.
As the government finalizes the rules for the new labor codes, the Labor Ministry began talking about giving flexibility to companies to have four working days instead of five or six.

The new labor codes could provide companies with the flexibility of four working days in a week, even as the working hours limit of 48 hours for a week will remain “sacrosanct”, Labor and Employment Secretary Apurva Chandra said.
This implies that there would be longer working hours if the working days were reduced. For example, a 4-working-day week would have to meet the 48-hour weekly work hours, resulting in daily shifts of 12 hours, which will correspondingly reduce if there is a five-day or six-day working week. And the Internet is having mixed feelings about this.
The Labor Secretary stated that having a reduced number of working days does not mean a cut in paid holidays.
The rulemaking process is already underway and some think it could be completed within a week.

These changes will be a part of the new labor codes, whose draft rules are being formulated by the government. Employees should also get free medical check-ups through the Employees State Insurance Corporation, according to some reports.
Of course, a country has to do much more than enact laws. It has to enforce them.
In 2019, the Indian government released a report which painted a harrowing picture of the condition of workers in the country, with most earning less than half of the minimum accepted norms, 71% not having any written job contract, 54% not getting paid leave and over 57% in rural areas and nearly 80% in urban areas working much beyond the 48-hour week.

Data from jobs marketplace ZipRecruiter shows that in 2020, the share of company job postings offering four-day work weeks was 69 for every 10,000 job postings. “It’s a tiny number to be sure, but it’s up from 40 in 2019. Between 2015 and 2018, the share was fewer than 18 in 10,000 postings each year,” Quartz’s Michelle Cheng wrote.
That increase might suggest that companies are trying to cut costs during challenging times. But the new interest in shortened workweeks may also reflect a dawning understanding that people can be more productive outside the regular work week.
“Companies may be realizing that they can get five days’ worth of work done in four,” Julia Pollak, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter, explained.

And it’s not like only giants like industry giants like Microsoft Japan can allow themselves to work shorter weeks.
For example, the staff at Australian nail polish brand Kester Black all work a four-day week, with founder Anna Ross previously explaining that it’s important that employees have a say in any potential operational changes of this nature.
Kathryn Blackham, chief executive of Versa, once told the ABC that adopting a four-day work week at the digital agency has led to a 30-40% increase in revenue and a trebling of profits over a period of 12 months.

However, as Cheng noted, while the percent increase in companies adopting four-day weeks is large, the absolute number of companies going this way is still tiny. Plus, shortened workweeks remain impractical for more hands-on industries like construction and personal care, where hours-in usually correlates with productivity-out.

Ridiculous idea. People don't get one extra day off, because they need that day to recover from the long working days. Because people are so tired they will make more mistakes, productivity will go down but the number of accidents will go up. If you really want to give people more time off, just decrease the number of working hours. In the Netherlands you legally can't work more than 9 hours a day, 45 hours per week and 2080 hours per year. On average most people work about 37,5 hours per week.
my schedule is two on two off basically so I can work two days, crash one and still have a day off.
Load More Replies...The longer hours is a tough sell, but I worked at a place where we had four 10-hour days. It was tough at first, but knowing that you get a three-day weekend every week (and sometimes four days on holidays!) helped us push through.
I think 10 hours is doable. 12 is just a little too far.
Load More Replies...Ah, so corporations own the government in India too? Yeah, this will start as an "option" for about 6-12 months and then the executives will all say "we need to do this too so we can stay competitive and you can keep your jobs!" Same bullshit every time. "Oh, it's just an idea we want to try" and then "Do it or lose your job."
India has been needing some worker reforms for a while (something most countries need at this point, to be honest). If this is what gets their ball rolling, bravo.
A lot of Americans work more than this in a week. My bf works 5 12 hour days. Unfortunately these days a lot of businesses are doing this.
From someone who has worked these hours it is great , actually have time to recover and get stuff done . I am much more productive come monday.
I love the idea! I think having a longer weekend is fantastic - a time to really enjoy life. I usually try and organise my work hours like that anyway. Judging by the comments there are lots of people who don't like the idea. It would be so good if we could be flexible - work out an arrangement that suits both employer and employee. I also like the idea of working in fortnights rather than weeks - work 8 or 10 days straight and then have weekends that are 6 or 4 days long. This gives enough time to really use the weekend, go away on adventures for a few days.
I don't think it's a good idea. I worked 10 hours shifts, and by the end of the 8th hour your productivity just plummetting. Besides, a lot of people work extra hours, and with such a long working day you'll end up either staying at work till midnight or sacrificing your "extra" day off anyway.
If I did this, I would actually have an extra day. Work 11/12 hours a day (tv station) and a free day would be nice.
Please don't. I don't want my family in India to suffer as much as my dad does in work right now.
Could it be the lack of Indian people in the pictures?
Load More Replies...I work 12 hours a day for 5 days on then have 4 days off. I much prefer it this way. When I worked 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with 2 days off in between I hated it, I felt like I wasn't home at all.
I work 3 days one week, four the other. Seven days out of every two weeks. Two days on, two off except weekends which are alternating 3 days on or 3 days off. I work half the year even if I take no vacation time. Then you calculate the 120 hrs I get for vacations and I can take a week off by burning 24 hrs. Then this fall I earn another 40 hrs as I hit 15 years. It is the best schedule.
My husband works at the US post office and his hour are often 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week. Only working those hours 4 days a week is just fine.
In Germany you are only supposed to work 8 hours a day. Overtime (up to 2 additional hours a day) has to be part of your contract. (in theory- of course there are black sheeps and exceptions)On my contract it says that overtime (how much must be defined) is included in my regular pay but since I work flexible hours i can just take hours or day of (Great German word "abfeiern"- "party off/away") It really us worth searching for a good employer (even if it doe not happen overnight and is especially difficult in bigger enterprises)
oh man. sry for spelling my cold messes with my concentration
Load More Replies...I worked a four on and four off shift for several years and liked it, 12 hour shifts aren't too bad because I had 4 days to recuperate.
My working week is just like that, 12hrs x 4 days a week and to me is much better than 8hrs x 6days because at the end of the week i spent much less time in the street. in a standard working day is like work 9 to1 lunch then work again 3 to 7. Going home for lunch is losing extra time in commute and is hard or just can't do something useful in that time (like shopping, medical date or paperwork). is not perfect tough, imposible to find a nursery so you need family support.
I do twelve hour days switching from four days a week then three. It's hard only seeing my wife four hours tops on work days, but three or four day weekends are great.
Given that, as it says, people are working beyond to five-day week as it is, I can't help but think that this is a cynical plot. First the four-day week - with all its advantages and disadvantages - will all well and fine. And the the "we really need you to come for another day" and then it will be back to square one, only with 12 hour days.
"it's not mandatory". In real life, you work what your bosses want, or go out. This is the worst idea I"ve read in my life
This is doable and I wish my job would do this as well. I'm working anywhere between 10-14 hours sometimes. The question you should be asking is...how many hours am I supposed to work? 8!!! On a good day. Might work 8.5 to 9 hours but that's only if overtime gets too crazy. I wish that this was a national post so that yeah, the company sees that we do get burnt out and I would like to have a social life. Working this much is Absurd! But what r u going to do? Nothing. Bills still need to be paid and I don't mind getting time and a half. Just think about the long shifts that doctors have to endure, especially during Covid. At my job, I would love to work 4 days a week and work 12 hour shifts. An hour break would be nice too.
I work a 12 hour day every shift, plus sometimes late jobs (I work as a Paramedic). I love the amount of time I have off work, my holidays are better than teachers as I put the hours in. Doing a 9-5 would kill me now as I would feel that I would never be away from work
I think this is no model for the masses. i can work 10 hours if I get into the flow- if I don't I start making tiny errors with big fallout....
That sounds equally as bad. It’s only one day less of work in exchange for working four more hours per day. Makes no sense, it’s like more work really. If it was 9 or 10 hours then I would understand more. Working five eight hour days is also stupid and ridiculous so I don’t think this is worse. Just equally bad. I wouldn’t do either unless it was for a shitload of money.
I'm kinda torn: If you have a 10h day (x5) and they force you anyway to stay (unpaid!) "till the manager leaves" so it's 12h.... then you're much better off with a 12h (x4) day that's indeed 12h no unpaid time and home for three days. That kind of forced time stretching isn't possible if you're not there.
If that’s the United States and your employer fired you for not working unpaid, you could take them to court for losses. It’s more common than you may think.
Load More Replies...Tried this once and it didn't work out. We spent our extra off day doing all the stuff we didn't have time for on working days. And catching up on sleep. Luckily it was a voluntary experiment and ee dropped it after a couple of weeks.
Depends on the person & wages, honestly. Hubs does a 5 day, 10hr per day wk totaling 50hrs min per wk. Hes does it but hes also in bed early every night. Its unfortunate that even with decent, competitive pay from his company its the 10hrs of overtime that make his paychecks livable
Most people seem to ignore that it would be flexible (allowing companies the option for 4 day week) and not a mandatory thing !!
Ummmm yeh it's called FIFO and thousands of people do it in Australia
You’re saying “ummmm yeh” like it’s some obvious thing even though the comparison you’re making isn’t even the same. Remind yourself what FIFO stands for and then explain to us why that’s different from this. Because it is.
