I’m Photographing Family Life “Through The Rainbow Windows” During Social Distancing
Over the last week, during this very strange time when we need to stay inside as much as possible, many people put rainbows in their windows to spread some happiness to those who saw them.
I wanted to spread the joy further and create a gallery of these bright and cheerful windows for those who can’t get out at all. But I wasn’t satisfied just capturing an outside view of a window, I wanted to show a snippet of life inside, too. As a family photographer who loves nothing more than visiting families to record real memories, I wanted a way to continue this safely, no physical contact involved, so I did it all through the glass. There’s no fee for the images but for those who are able, I suggested a donation to our local food bank.
Since I began this project, the regulations have changed and to be crystal clear, I am not advocating going outside any more than is absolutely necessary, on the UK government approved exercise walks for example, nor for photos to be taken from the inside. The windows stay closed and we communicate through messages and hand signals.
The project is keeping me inspired as a way to keep creating while I’m unable to work normally. I’ve always believed in the importance of documenting real-life memories, the mess, chaos and fun of family life in the home so I’m thrilled people are signing up to be part of my project.
I’m using the hashtag #ThroughTheRainbowWindows and taking one photo of the proud maker of the rainbows waving through their window and a second photo taken through the glass as they carry on with their day.
