Wonderful. Magical. Lovely. All of these are words that totally do not describe 2020 for most of us. It’s been a long and exhausting uphill battle of a year. And even though we can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel (some would argue it’s a reflection from those brand new Covid-19 vaccines or the US presidential elections), it’ll take a while to get over what a disaster of a year we’ve had.

People are venting their feelings about 2020 in meme-form and comparing it to a whole bunch of defective, badly-designed things and disgusting-looking food. Scroll down, upvote your fave ‘if 2020 was a’ pics collected by Bored Panda, and let us know what you think this year most closely resembles. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, some of these images are certainly 100% how we feel about the year.

Bored Panda reached out to 'Know Your Meme's' Senior Editor, Matt Schimkowitz, to get his take on what 2020 has been like and if we can expect things to get better once the year on the calendar changes. Matt said that if he had to compare 2020 to a thing, it'd be a "dead fish wrapped in a soiled newspaper swimming in a pool of garbage water" and pointed out that even though memes "help keep things light," the reality is that nothing can replace "the loss that so many people have suffered this year."

Just to give you a brief reminder of some of what we went through in 2020, don’t forget the fires, the threat of WW3, Brexit stuff happening, the ongoing global pandemic, and even more fires. And that's not all...

I believe the correct answer, after much calculation and deliberation, is “equilateral triangle”

[Takes a deep breath.] Then there were the hurricanes, earthquakes, explosions, and terror attacks. Mass unemployment and widespread chaos. Economic troubles and overwhelmed hospitals. And that’s just the tip of the Iceberg of Despair.

(PS—did you know that if you flip 2020 on its side, you get NONO? Coincidence? I think not! We should have known it’d be a bad year!)

"If the culture determines that 2021 is a better year than 2020, it's possible that 2020 could continue to be featured in memes, at least for the first two months. If 2021 is worse, then I can imagine some memes making fun of the idea that we thought this year was hard. Hopefully, though, there are some sunny days ahead, and we can look back on 2020 as a particularly rough one," Matt from 'Know Your Meme' shared his prognosis about the near future with Bored Panda.

On a more serious note, we wanted to find out Matt's opinion about whether 2020 could still be a home run of a year. While there are some indications that things might get better soon, Matt isn't as optimistic.

"I wish I could say yes, but the truth is, I think that as a society, we are going to be processing the hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of illnesses for the rest of our lives," he stressed the sobering reality that the pandemic's consequences aren't something that we can ignore. "And that's just focusing on the coronavirus, plenty of other really catastrophic things happened this year."

According to ‘Know Your Meme,’ the very first instance of an ‘if 2020 was a…’ joke actually happened back in November of 2019. Suspicious? A bit.

The meme spread and spiked in popularity in March of this year when the Facebook page Coronavirus Public Meme Service posted a version of the meme with a photo of Ramsay Bolton from Game of Thrones. You’ll remember Ramsay as being one of the worst people on the show, rivaling even Joffrey Baratheon with his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life.

It was on November 14 that the meme format saw a resurgence in popularity once again. This time, on Twitter.

If you had to compare 2020 to a thing or a food, what would it be, dear Pandas? Personally, I find that the reflection in my mirror perfectly sums the year up. Either that or a sad potato that was left behind in the fields while all of its friends went off to the factory to become chips and fries and those little smiley potato fritters.

I've grown several pineapple plants from tops: Cut the fruit halfway down, then slowly pull the rest of the fruit off the baby plant. Gently pull off about an inch of the lower leaves in a circular pattern, and place baby plant into a small glass of water with a pinch of plant food. Wait until it sprouts roots, changing water and food every few days. Keep out of direct sun. When roots are several inches long, plant the young plant into citrus/cactus potting soil and keep in direct sunlight. Water as the top inch of the soil dries out, and keep well drained.
