I Traveled 10000km Through The Balkans Looking For Futuristic Communist Monuments
I drove 10000km through the Balkans looking for Spomeniks. In the language of the former Yugoslavia this word means monument, or memorial.
They commemorate the Second World War and were mainly built in the 1960s/70s during Tito’s regime, who furthermore, inaugurated a certain number of them himself. They were often erected on the sites of important battles, massacres or concentration camps.
Today, around thirty years after the breakup of Yugoslavia, most of them have been demolished. Among those still visible, some are in perfect condition and are part of official complexes, some are looked after to a greater or lesser extent, and others have clearly been abandoned or are even in ruins.
I made two trips in the Balkans, 4500 kilometers in 2016 and 5500 kilometers in 2017. During those trips I photographed 50 of these monuments in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia and Slovenia.
Have a look at some of them:

Great photos but I wish that there was more information such as where they are and what they commemorate?
Are you able to find out which artist was commisioned to designe and create these works? You should write a book with all of these pics and detailed information! ❤
This is so cool! Have you heard of Stanislav Szukalski? I think you would love his work. His art and sculptures are pretty increadible ❤
I love all of these pictures...thank you for sharing! I want to research the topic much more now! Please look into Stanislav Szukalski! Different countries such as Poland and Germany were commissioning artist's to create these huge monuments long before WW2! Very interesting! ❤✌
