I Started The #whynotchallenge For Suicide Pervention To Give Everyone A Million Reasons To Live

Join the #WhyNotChallenge for suicide prevention! The challenge is simple: make a list of 11 reasons why not to go and post it a picture of your list with the hashtag on Instagram. The goal of this challenge is to give anyone a million unique reasons to live once they look up the hashtag. People die by suicide because they run out of reasons to live, let’s give them more reasons to stay.

There are a lot of reasons why I created this challenge. Maybe it’s because I am a mental health advocate that suffers from mental illness myself. Maybe it’s because of the countless hours I’ve spent talking to people, usually complete strangers, convincing them to make it through the night. But it all simmers down to the fact that we all get hopeless and sometimes we don’t know what is worth living for until we take time to remind ourselves.

I wanted to create a challenge that would be a movement. I found that posting hotlines were an unsuccessful method because they can be intimidating. So I created this challenge as a non-aggressive, proactive, and reflective method for everyone. Suicidal or simply an advocate, everyone can benefit from remembering the wonderful things this life has to offer him or her.

We don’t need to list all the statistics about how many people suffer in silence and die by suicide everyday. We all know someone, a stranger, a friend, or an idol, someone who ran out of reasons to live. This challenge is simple and can be done in a matter of minutes. But in a matter of minutes it can also save someone a lifetime.

And here is the problem: It's hard to write that list, impossibile. So we're read about Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, Robin Williams, Edoardo Agnelli, Alessandra Appiano, Bruno Bettelheim. Sometimes it is hard to understand, and give a help to those who live in trouble with their souls.

That's exactly why I created this challenge for everyone. It's really hard for suicidal to think of reasons why not to go, that's why we must help give them reasons and help them to stay.

For millions of years, nature has "culled the herd", removing the sick or mental or physical inept or old or just plain useless or troublemakers from the herd. Now humans think they understand evolutionary biology better then nature. If someone wants to leave the living, that's natures way - who are humans to fight it. If you want to go, go - with 7 billion people on the planet, there are plenty of spares that actually want to stick it out and see where the ride goes. Stop wasting effort on trying to save beings that don't want to be here. Who are you to say you're right and they're wrong?

The odd thing is, I use to have that same mindset. I use to think that if people wanted to go, they should. But over the years, through my experience and the people I've helped... I found that most those people don't want to go deep down. That something hold them back. Sometimes, someone holds them back. And most times, they are so thankful they didn't go. So with that, I just ask you think about it more. This is my mindset of course and you have a different one, but mine changed and yours might as well.
