I Rediscovered A Box Of Pink Painted Scrap Wood And It Only Took A Global Lockdown To Finally Do What I Had Intended To Do With Them 7 Years Ago.

As a director, there wasn’t going to be a lot of shooting commercials in early 2020. So I rummaged through my studio and found these pieces of wood that I had painted years ago. I also happened to have collected a lot of other stuff, for you never know when or why. And a friend supplied me with lots of teeth. These things happen…

The first face.

These eyes are made of buttons and I hand carved wood hinges so that they can move.

The lower jaw moves as well, with the intention to do a small animation… Let’s hope that won’t take another 7 years.

In my mind it looked all anatomically correct. But I’m glad it is not.

The second face, the long face.

Another movable jaw for animation purposes.

These eyes are made of bottle caps in 6 different stages of blinking for, you guessed it, an animation.

Acrylic teeth from China.

Face 03. The side jaw.

If at all possible I try and recycle. In this case the screw is about 40 years old.

The eye made of an old radio vacuum tube with a plastic button glued on.

The tongue was made by cutting up an old red T-shirt and hardened into shape with some glue.

The small pieces that were cut off made it into miniature faces.

A skewer for a cigarette, a stretched metal spring for smoke.

And these were the very last pieces. All pink blocks gone, five faces made.

Eyes made with pearls of my girlfriend’s broken jewellery.

Some making of pics if you’re into that. This blocky set up is how they all start out.

The first rough cut.

This was kinda ridiculous. Why on earth would I want to make wooden hinges for moving eyes?

Rubber bands are my best friends while glueing.

How the jaw is built.

How the jaw is shaped.

And this is me, mid cut. It’s cold on the balcony but lockdown wasn’t an excuse to cut wood in the living room.

Almost forgot! Before all the faces there was a moment of animation inspiration. With thanks to the wonderful sound of @thysmusic.
