I am fascinated by history and weather. The 1900 hurricane in Galveston was the most deadly hurricane to date in US History with 20% of the Galveston population killed. Standards for severe weather warnings were not in place like they are today and there was nothing to prevent the storm surge from sweeping the island. Thousands of homes were destroyed, even the one next door to this house.

The Bishop’s Palace built in 1892 remained standing throughout the storm and was a refuge for people who had been seeking shelter. Members of the household rescued people by forming a human chain and pulling them out of the waves. The house suffered little damage compared to the rest of the neighborhood.

During my last visit to Galveston, I finally got to visit this majestic house and capture it at Christmas time.
