I Photographed A Woman Embracing Her Birthmark As She Defines Her Own Beauty
Lilah Grace is a young woman who was born with a face birthmark from her nose to her cheek. I recently met her and wanted to photograph her so that she could fully embrace her birthmark in all its beauty.
Lilah opens up and confesses: “Covering myself up with makeup and feeling like what was supposed to live up to a certain type “beautiful” always seemed to go against me and ultimately defined who I thought I was and what I thought I was supposed to look like. That train of thought influenced how I viewed myself for most of my life. I recently reached a point where I just wanted to be the best I could be mentally and physically. I started to eat right and work out and it showed…”
I hope this inspires other women with skin differences to embrace their beauty.

The layers of clothing started being peeled back one layer at a time until I was comfortable in a bathing suit and in my own skin.
It wasn’t until that moment, that I decided to stop covering up my port wine birthmark and realized what I once thought was my biggest flaw wasn’t a flaw at all.
It was part of who I always was and who I had now had become, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly with all of its colors.
The confidence I have developed and the new sense of freedom I now feel, breaking free from the layers of material and makeup along with societal expectations, is what makes me feel the most beautiful of all.”
