I Photographed A Volcano In Indonesia And It Looks Like Another Planet
Hi, I’m Joris Hermans, Belgian photographer and founder of The World Ahead Of Us². A few months ago, I was in Java, Indonesia with my girlfriend Joanna Winter and we visited Mount Bromo; an active volcano famous for its epic sunrise and mighty roar.
Mount Bromo sits in an ancient caldera together with Mts. Semeru, Batok and Widodaren. The floor of the caldera is called the Sea of Sand, which you have to cross if you want to gaze into the crater…
To watch the sunset, we had to get up at 3am to hike to one of the viewpoints on Penanjakan Hill. The hike took around 1.5 hours and once we arrived at our viewpoint too early for the sunrise so had to wait for about an hour in the freezing cold. Luckily, locals were burning little bonfires and selling coffee to warm up us poor travelers.
But the cold was soon forgotten when the sun started to rise. I’d never seen a more out of this world landscape and the colors were nothing but amazing. Mars came to mind when seeing all those red and brown tones.
I hope I can visit Mighty Mount Bromo again some time…
