I Photograph Free Roaming Horses In Breathtaking Mountain Landscapes In The Alps (22 Photos)

Hi, my name is Cécile and I’m a photographer with a passion for horses. I love to travel and I love to go to the mountains. A while ago I started to combine all these passions and since then, I regularly visit horses living in the alps.

It is a very common thing to release horses and other livestock such as cattle, goats and sheep in the mountains in summertime. During the transhumance in the summer months the animals live free on the high pastures and feed on herbs, drink fresh mountain water and have to adjust to the sometimes harsh climate. This tradition is called Almsommer or Sommerfrische in german language and is practised basically everywhere in the alps.

One of the native horse breeds of this region are Haflinger horses, they have a golden coat and flaxen white mane. I find it interesting to travel to places in Germany, Austria and South Tyrol (Italy) to photograph horses roaming through these scenic mountain landscapes.

Some herds can be found already on pastures on 1200 m altitude, but I have also already hike up to 2500 m, where no trees grow anymore and the horses have their own glacier views. The world changes with each valley and mountain top and it is the best feeling, when you can find the horses in this beautiful scenery after a long hike.
