“And the home of the brave.” Can you imagine risking your NFL career & more to bring attention to police brutality against Black & Brown people? What courage! The anthem says this is the land of the free, but Kaepernick and his supporters know otherwise. It’s taken four years, but last recently… “We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe black lives matter.” Too little, too late. They fired him in 2016. Kaepernick & others who knelt during the anthem peacefully and powerfully communicated to a huge audience what needed to be heard. Some white people scoff and rant, but can they even imagine what Black & Brown people encounter, especially Black MEN, at the hands of police in everyday situations? I think not. As CK said, “love is at the root of the resistance.” He has been bestowed many honors including Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience and is an inspiration to me.
This portrait is made with wool and a felting needle, no paint. The process is like tattooing, but with fiber.
