We are from Bicol, one of the most beautiful provinces in the Philippines. In Bicol, we love dishes infused with coconut milk, that’s why we often have coconut shells. One day, my father, who is a self-taught painter, had an idea to do an oil painting on one of those coconut shells. Although it is a tedious task to dry and smoothen the shells, my father encouraged me to use coconut shells as art mediums too.

Since the shells are circular, I developed the creative idea to paint famous characters on the coconut shells. Then, I also ventured into painting human and animal portraits on coconut shells. I also started bringing my unique art to different art fairs here in the Philippines. Coconut is indeed the fruit of life. From cooking, gardening (coconut husks are used as a growing medium), beauty, health, and now, to drawing ideas, coconut proves its significance in this world.
