Last year I entered a short film competition titled ‘You Only Die Once’ #YODO hosted by Hospice Waterloo Region and the Grand River Film Festival. After a year’s work and moments where I felt like the film was not going to come together, not only did I finish but my film won!
The goal was to create a 3-5 minute film that explored death as a part of living and living well until we die. This was my first film and having it win and be shown at a film festival was humbling and an incredible experience.
As a Social Worker by training (it is my full-time job) and a freelance photographer, this film was a chance to bring my two professional worlds together. I wanted to create a film that was honest and that people across ages, lived experiences and views on death and dying could connect to.
I also wanted to create a piece that could open conversations; conversations with ourselves, with our loved one and within our communities. I hope that I succeeded, and I hope that you take the 5 minutes to enjoy my film ‘a beautiful death’.
I am also curious to hear your thoughts on how you connected to the film so please do share!
Thanks everyone!
