I’ve been a metal artist for about 7 years now, and had been planning to make a piece out of cutlery for a while now. Collecting discarded flatware from thrift stores and yard sales I was able to save up buckets full of knives, forks, and spoons – and last year I received a commission for a 25th (silver) Wedding Anniversary gift of a Sandhill Crane sculpture!
I have about 1600 pieces of silverware in this sculpture, as well as some rebar (for the legs) and other support pieces.

Her name is “Oneida” and she looks ready to take off!
I made eyes for her in my glass studio
She stands a little over 5′ (152cm) tall
The last thing I did was add some branches to support her
Here I am with the finished sculpture!
From the back, you can see the knives on the wings, spoons on the body and forks on the legs
Here I am in the shop during the early “leg” stage
Here’s Oneida in the shop before she got her wings!
Here I am welding one of the over 500 knives to the wings
It’s hard to believe that I have any supplies left -BUT – I’m ready for the next commission!
