I wanted to come up with an art show that engaged the community and I have a passion for public art. “Lost and Found” is an art treasure hunt that encourages my followers on social media (@djbarryart) to look out for clues and discover artwork that I will continue to hide around the state in obscure places. Each woodcut takes me approximately 10 hours to make.
I was tired of coordinating with local businesses when to install and pick up art shows and I was also burnt out on painting commissions for customers. I wanted to do something fun and I love public art because its a great way to interact with my neighbors.
I carve out the designs out of 3/4″ AC wood traditionally used by carpenters for flooring. After sanding the woodcuts and painting them with exterior high quality paints, I use handcut paper stencils and spray paint to paint the detail of each character. The last thing I do is install hardware on it so that anyone can take it home and hang the artwork on a nail.
All of my artwork in “Lost and Found” is free under one condition: you promise to do one good thing for the world. The message and true nature of this show is to get my neighbors thinking positively on how they can contribute to their community and at first I was just hoping maybe random acts of kindness might start happening around us as a result. The first couple that found Lost #1, “World Cow,” told me they were either going to donate to a charity or do something even bigger! Immediately I realized that these random acts of kindness will result in much bigger happenings for my community then someone giving you the right of way on the road. I’m excited to do more!
As a kid I loved going on treasure hunts and as an adult I love art so why not combine the two to make a fun family experience for all to enjoy?
