On my way to the ASPCA to adopt a dog, I felt the same as I did the morning I met my husband, all nerves and a sense of possibility. What if they didn’t have the single right dog for me? They didn’t: They had two. An inseparable, bonded pair named Bebe and Zuzu. As soon as I saw their adorable, fluffy faces, there was no way I was going home without the both of them.
While I’d been drawing pet portraits for over a year, only after taking home Bebe and Zuzu did I realize how useful miniature pet portraits are. You can take 1-inch pendants everywhere you go.
The challenge is capturing the tiniest hairs and highlights. For that I use extra fine brush pens and super-sharpened pencils to paint cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and more. I put hours into drawing each pet’s face. The full process of painting and turning the portrait into a glass pendant takes a couple days, so I like to work on more than one project at a time. My favorite part is the way that the glass magnifies the pet’s eyes. And I love how much the pendant will mean to the pet’s loving family.
