I Gave 100 Cameras To The Homeless And This Is What They Photographed.
I gave out 100 cameras to the homeless in Spartanburg, SC and asked them to photograph their lives – where they slept, where they went during the day, what was important to them. I wanted the photographers to feel the joy that comes with creating art, hear a message of hope and to have a voice. Maybe for the first time in our city, the homeless had a chance to be a part of the process instead of just being a problem that other people tried to solve.
The effort is part of a photo contest where our community votes on the the top 20 photos selected by a panel of judges. Voting takes place when people donate spare change for their favorite images. All the proceeds go to organizations serving the homeless and prizes are awarded for the top 3 photographs.
The cameras we handed out are disposable. The people behind them are not.
