I Found My Feet In Canada And These Birds Found Their Wings

“There are pieces of me everywhere. Do you dare to follow? Past carousels and beach piers and cobblestone streets. Do you know where my home will be tomorrow? Somewhere solid please where I can find my feet.”

I wrote those lyrics at a time that I was struggling to find a cultural identity. My search took me from England to America to Canada – where I found open arms. It is the place I have “found my feet” – as a British Canadian, as a wife, a mother, and an artist.

I fell in love with making felt creations when I made a nursery mobile for my son back in 2015. I love the whole journey – from dreaming up an idea with a customer, to sketch pad to bringing to life in felt form. In honour of Canada’s 150th Anniversary, I wanted to share a recent piece with you that I created for a little boy who is passionate about birds. It features all birds found in Canada – a Canadian goose, a mallard duck, an American robin, a red-shouldered hawk, and a blue jay.

I was nervous to create it when I received the order. I had never made any 3D style birds like this before. But I love a good challenge and I am proud to share what I have made.

My Made Known Loved shop allows me to be a stay-at-home mom, help support our little family and do what I love. And I am proud to be a Canadian artist. Happy 150th Canada!

(Currently, I do not ship outside of Canada and the USA but I am certainly open to it, so please feel free to message with me if you are interested in my work.)

P.S. Just for fun, I made up this card for my little customer to go with his mobile.
