Business coaches love to give a lot of useful and not-so-good advice on running a successful business, but one of the most useful tips, probably the best, is not given by them but by folklore. We are now talking about the old proverb: “Don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.”

Indeed, doing this is probably the best way to shoot your own business or job in the foot, but for some reason, many managers or owners do this on a regular basis. The result, of course, turns out to be quite predictable: at best, these are financial losses, at worst, a threat to the very existence of the company or department.

A similar situation happened to the author of the original post in the Malicious Compliance community on reddit, which scored about 24.3K upvotes and almost 1K understanding comments. However, understanding someone else’s example and facing a similar situation yourself are completely different things. But let’s just examine this particular story…

More info: Reddit

The Original Poster worked in a company that repaired pipes for gas pipelines

So, the Original Poster worked for a large company that repaired pipes for gas pipelines. The basis of the business was that the old pipe was removed, analyzed for wear and damage by special expensive measuring equipment, and then the damaged sections were replaced with new ones.

The OP had quite a high salary and tried to work extremely diligently

As the OP himself admits, given that the parent company was also engaged in the gas business, the business of his employers was high-margin, and he also received quite a decent salary. He even agreed to spend almost two hours on daily commutes.

There were a few people in the OP’s department that maintained the high-precision measuring machine, critical to the workflow, who fully understood how it actually worked. One of them was Vladimir, an old technician who serviced all the company’s equipment and was therefore very busy.

Eventually, the OP became the only person who knew almost everything about the process-critical measurement machine

The second was Antonio, also an elderly man, and the third was just the OP, who during his work, being a very pedantic and professional person, scrupulously perceived senior masters’ lessons, and over time became, as it seemed to him, an indispensable worker because he knew practically everything about this technique.

There was also a man working in the department named Igor, who was a rather negligent person and kept his job solely due to the fact that he was the brother of Freddie – the OP’s boss’ boss. For a year, Igor made crucial mistakes several times in working with the machine, which then had to be eliminated by the author of the post.

The OP’s colleague used to make critical mistakes so, one day, he just collected all the information and sent it to management

Moreover, Igor repeatedly tried to shift the blame onto the OP, but he did not succeed – after all, the OP’s professional reputation was simply impeccable. As a result, after another act of negligence on the part of a colleague, our hero could not stand it, so he collected and documented all the cases, and then sent them to management.

Image credits: Official U.S. Navy Page (not the actual image)

Boss told the OP he could either quit or apologize for “regularly bullying colleagues”

The next day, Freddie came to their place of work and approached the OP, demanding that he immediately apologize to Igor for the allegedly unfair accusations. Otherwise, as Freddy said, the OP will be fired immediately. However, our hero understood that this outcome was also quite possible, and expected something like this.

The OP preferred to leave work and took the entire department down with him

In general, the OP announced that he was leaving, packed his things, and immediately left the place of work. The fact is that Antonio was on a long vacation at that time, and Vladimir could not devote enough time to setting up the measuring machine – and now it remained at Igor’s full disposal.

After a while, of course, everything went wrong in the department. Igor did not set the machine well, Antonio was completely unavailable, and Vladimir did not always have any physical ability to set everything up correctly. And the workflow in the company was built in such a way that the slightest hitch in the work of the OP’s department led to stagnation in the common cause.

After some time, the management fired the whole department and the OP’s former boss as well

As a result, after some time, top management representatives arrived to investigate everything. Freddy and Igor were fired, and the managers issued a formal apology to OP as well. At least he hopes the apology was sincere…

Image credits: Paul Downey (not the actual image)

Commenters admitted that the OP was absolutely right and admired the way he handled this situation

People in the comments, of course, supported the OP, noting that although the story looks quite long, it is, in the end, completely worth reading. Well, the principle “Do not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs” worked in this situation one hundred percent.

We also want to ask your opinion on this story. Perhaps you had to deal with something similar as well? Then, just feel free to write your own tale, and it would be nice if it had a happy ending.

It is incredible what absolute buffoons a company will retain in management positions with no apparent review, who are responsible for huge chunks of the company's income. I would think that whoever was over these idiots would also suffer for being negligent.

It needed to be long to get the full effect of it, if it was just the cliff notes then it wouldn’t be as impactful and we probably wouldn’t side with the writer of the story.

Worked at a major chemical supplier whom shall not be named but they're 1 of 2 in their business, they had such terrible internal management of documents they sent the wrong set of data out to a customer and then blamed it on me. I was hired to run their R&D lab which had a 2 year backlog of work that I cleared out in 6 months and then they threw me on production without any training with a data collection system that consisted of a 20 year old access database and a spreadsheet that nobody except the guy who wrote it could ever use properly. They pinned the data bit on me, let me go on trumped up disciplinary violations, but talking to an engineer a year later everything in the R&D ground to a halt, and I was one of 2 people who knew how to run all the 1-off research testing equipment and the other guy was retiring soon. they've had my old job posted online for 2 years now meanwhile I'm in charge of another company's pilot line. Don't contract out your critical quality people just to save money, and maybe listen to them when they talk about improvements to the process flow. Also when your contract staffing company is at a >100% attrition rate maybe look at why you're getting rid of people.

Yeah, too much technical details for anybody, who is not a "tech-nerd", but I think, it's still understandable. There was a Very Important Machine in OP's former workplace, which was operated and maintained correctly just by 4 guys in the entire Company (including OP). 2 of the guys left, the 3rd had s.h.itton of other jobs in the Company, so just OP remained. His shift-colleague -Igor- was not a pro, he had the job just because his brother was a boss there, being in good term with other bosses. Igor fckd up a few time the work with the Very Important Machine, trying to blame OP. It went so far, that all the Bosses were bullying him to the point, one them handed him an ultimatum. At this point OP said. F.U.C.K. YOU ALL, A.S.S.HOLES!

And once the smoke of BS wafted from the battlefield they all stood up an clapped. REALLY? A high tech engineering company that will allow an employee to build up TWO years untaken leave? Only happened three years ago and already the arch enemy's name is forgotten? A rotor blade that is measured to +/- 0,2 mm gets dropped and people calmly ignore it? If that blade got built back into a turbine even a tiny bit of damage would cause mayhem - think of the stories of aircraft engines breaking up in midflight. Entertaining while I drank my coffee but hard to swallow.

I used to do literally everything in this bar that I worked at. I worked from 11:30am until 5:30 am THE NEXT MORNING six days a week, only having Tuesday nights off so I could babysit my baby cousin for my aunt to attend her weekly darts tournament. The owner would give me the entire bar, pool rooms and dining area where I would have between 30 to 150 running open tabs while the cocktail waitresses he hired would come in for like 4 hour shifts and have 3 tables each that none of them could handle and then he would expect me to cover their tables as well. So one very busy night one of the cocktail waitresses couldn't keep up with the 3 tables she had while I had over 100 running tabs/tables going and the owner comes up and asked me to get an order from one of the waitresses' tables so I went and got them 10 shots of whiskey and then went about my work trying to close my open tabs.... So a fight breaks out at that cocktail waitresses table and the table gets flipped over and all of..

The shot glasses hit the new tile flooring the owner had just had put in after removing the carpet. They all shatter and a guy ends up with a hole in his hand from landing on a broken shot glass. I quickly wrapped the guys hand and took him out through the back door of the bar and sent him to the hospital with the agreement that we would cover his hospital bill because he was a regular of mine and the cops had already been called and were en route and the owner along with all of the cocktail waitresses were drunk and we would be shut down and on the front page of the paper if it was discovered a customer had been seriously injured. I then charmed the cops into leaving as the fight was subdued and I cleaned up the broken glass and blood on the floor while the cops were out front making the fighters leave. Most of the customers left when the cops arrived but after I collected the tabs from the people who stayed I still had about $800 in open checks that hadn't been paid. The boss...

Fantastic story, I wish the OP would have been compensated by the company and promoted. He would repair the machine properly, train employees to do same, adhere to a strict reporting schedule and enforce the rules. The company lost money, valued employee and an opportunity to correct their internal systems by not hiring OP and providing OP with at least 5 times his pay and a solid long term contract. 🕊️❤️🕊️

It’s funny how being a dedicated and hard worker will usually end with the hard worker receiving the ire from their peers. Complete three times to work than your fellow employees and management will tell you they can’t promote you, it would be like losing two free employees! Mediocre minds for mediocre jobs. There is a serious flaw in the thought process of the US employee that needs to be resolved. Power to the people

I have lived his life only not getting fired. I ended up quitting, in fact my entire department that supported this one group did. No matter what these 4 women did they never were held to account. My coworker quit first, then my boss and then me. I was last only because I was out on leave with cancer and decided I could not go back to that toxic environment anymore. The queen bee in that group is the only one that survived and they promoted her after she turned on her cohorts. No honor between the witches

I love when everyone loses their job due to one employee being treated unfairly. So fun!

This was an excellent post! That poor guy! This is why it pays to do what he did, follow the rules, take notes and pictures and cover your a*s.I am glad he got a new job so fast and that he loves it! It was very much, worth the read!

Nobody internally audits anymore to ensure accuracy as long as money's rolling in, they wait till there are problems and let bad management do just that

Just to make clear, OP's company didn't repair "pipes for gas pipelines", they refurbished/restored PARTS for GAS TURBINES. That's a whole different level of complexity and required precision!

Power to the people

so basically, this guy claims to be so important to the huge global company that he single-handedly kept his division running (as a lower waged contractor), and then everything fell apart due to him leaving. oh, how the internet seems to be so full of these heroes.

The part where Freddy gets extradited to the US and taken to court? Um, highly unlikely, which makes me doubt how real this story actually is. If it is "real", then there's definitely liberties taken for the sake of a good story...

Sorry to be "that person" but, had the spelling and grammar been corrected, this article would have been far more readable. Also, we really didn't need all the minutiae of the job. A condensed version would have encouraged me to read the entire article, which I gave up on halfway through. Turbine measuring is just not that fascinating!

The only thing I'm astonished at in this entire post is how juvenile (childish) and ineptly written the story is (not the fictitious story itself but it's presentation.) The grammar, spelling, sentence structuring and plot delivery is on a level with most 9 year olds.....🤷‍♂️Someone actually put this in public? How embarrassing for them...🤦
