Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ has always been one of my favorite paintings. When re-creating this masterpiece in miniature, I hoped to capture the beauty and intensity of the original.

I hand cut each layer before painting and positioning them inside the watch. This tiny piece of art can fit in the palm of your hand and I hope you enjoy seeing my process.

Finished watch

I re-created Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ as a layered painting in a vintage pocket watch.

The sky

I started with a dark blue watercolor wash for the swirling impressionist sky. The punched out holes became the stars.

Glowing colors

I used thin layers of gouache paint to build up the ‘glow’ in blues and white, then glazed over it in yellows.

Layers

For each landscape element I created a different layer and a backing to space them apart, adding depth to the piece.

Finishing touches

The layers were glued down background to foreground with archival paper glue. I often use precision tweezers to position the layers.
