I Create Surreal Photographs In My Bathtub That Channel Feminine Strength And Vulnerability
I am a Lithuanian-born visual artist based in Los Angeles. I’m driven to create thought-provoking pieces using non-traditional mediums.
“Miss Universe” is a contemporary photography series that uses contrast and contradiction to explore female identity. The centerpiece of each photo is a serene female face caught in a turbulent mixture of color and shape. In the midst of chaos, she remains defiant, using her inner strength to power through darkness and pain and come out the other side reborn, blooming in full color. We are left with the ultimate contradiction that through vulnerability we find strength.
This metamorphosis is reflected in the video as I explore the depths of self discovery – going through a portal into my creative universe.
My creative process is unusual. Working in a bathtub filled with water, thin layers of paint are poured over a moulding of a human head. The photograph is captured at the precise moment when all the elements interact. I then build upon the image by digitally integrating my own facial features. Although reminiscent of a self-portrait, the face retains its signature vacant quality.
