I Create Art That Reacts To Radioactivity

I’m French artist Parse/Error, and here is my latest project: Instability of Nature. This is an art piece reacting to radioactivity. A hypnotizing ripple disturbed by waves of light, a visualization of the particles captured by a Geiger-Müller counter.

Instability of Nature is a reflection on decay, through the prism of the disintegration of atomic nuclei. An exploration of the similarities between the mineral world and the organic world. A questioning about the relationship between the deterioration of matter and the degeneration of the mind and human societies.

Hiding a Geiger counter, the Instability of Nature is able to detect beta and gamma ionizing radiations released by radioactive atoms. Each particle detected causes a light wave propagating on the surface of the artwork.

Radioactivity is a natural and ubiquitous phenomenon, but human activity has turned it into an invisible and frightening threat: nuclear disasters, radioactive waste or atomic bombs. The work Instability of Nature hides its true nature behind a beautiful object, and immediately modifies the observer’s behavior when its purpose is revealed, causing anxiety and fascination.

Beta and Gamma particles are also found and produced in nature. As a matter of fact, the only deadly source for gamma radiation currently is from deep within the earth (natural fission processes), and outside sources of the earth since atomic power sources shield the gamma from leaving their point sources. Secondarily, beta radiation is high energy electrons, which is a naturally occurring source within the earth via decay processes, but also from neutron capture within the atmosphere to produce beryllium 10 and other radio isotope elements. What you are promoting may not be a healthy understanding of how things really are. We want to be aware of radiation and its effects when we produce weapons and power plants, but we don't need to sew ignorance and fear of science.

Don't get me wrong, what you've produced is a pretty representation and it would go far to teach if promoted that way. I like the design.
